Hi! We're Wear My Values, a small company creating apparel with a positive message. Our goal is to create a "stop and think moment" with wearable images that promote the America, and the world, in which we want to live.
During this campaign we're encouraging our backers, and everyone who sees the apparel they order, to #LookDeeper. Look deeper than the surface assumptions of what and who someone is. Look deeper to find commonalities. Look deeper for reasons to care about one another. Look deeper and you'll see the Patriot, the Ally, and the whole person in each human you encounter.
Our first Kickstarter was a success, raising $2384 (exceeding our $2002 goal) in 10 days! This allowed us to launch our company and our first design on T-shirts.
This second Kickstarter campaign will launch four new designs. In addition to T-shirts, Liberty's with Her and the new designs will available as die-cut stickers! Our funding goal is higher this time, so we're running the campaign for a full 30 days. With your help, we know we can make it!
After each apparel design meets its initial production costs, Wear My Values shares the profits between the artists, the company, and one or more issue-relevant organizations. This campaign is slated to benefit organizations including the ACLU, Operation Homefront, an anti-bullying group, and a refugee relief organization. Visit the Wear My Values webpage for more details about our mission and our plans!
Liberty for All features a Warhol-esque print of Lady Liberty wearing clothing characteristic of a variety of social, religious, and ethnic groups. Wear My Values believes that the rights, protections, and privileges of all people should be applied and defended equally. Whoever you are, whoever you love, whatever you believe, we believe in Liberty for All.
Liberty for All is the headlining design for our #LookDeeper campaign. Lady Liberty represents the best of American values: generosity, acceptance, and compassion. We encourage you to look for Liberty, wherever you are, in everyone you meet.
A portion of the profits from Liberty for All will benefit refugee relief organizations.
We are offering this shirt in sand, grey, orange, and garnet. #LibertyForAll
This is what an ALLY looks like is a new design inspired by the #ILookLikeAnEngineer campaign from a few years back. There are more and more people engaged and interested in defending the rights and protections of the more vulnerable members of their communities, but they don't know how to show that they're allies. These are Allies: people who are privileged enough to be safe from the discrimination, but who stand up and take action to show that the discrimination is wrong.
The shirt's text reads: "This is what an ALLY looks like. Allies may look different than you expect. #Look Deeper #WearMyValues #ImAnAlly." We're proud to release a design that allows every ally to show who they are and want to be.
A portion of the profits from This is what an ALLY looks like will benefit anti-bullying organizations.
This shirt is offered in white, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. We're offering white specifically to give the opportunity to tie-dye it in whatever colors may best represent your organization or your cause! #AllyLooksLike
Not Red, not Blue, AMERICAN speaks out against the partisan divide in the United States today. With this shirt, we are issuing a challenge: Make a statement and say that you are not defined by your last vote or political affiliation. As Americans, we choose how to treat our friends and neighbors.
We choose to seek commonality, to #LookDeeper than our last elections, and acknowledge that the person standing next to us as just as American as we are. The text on the front reads: "#LookDeeper #WearMyValues" and on the back reads: "Not Red, Not Blue, American #LookDeeper #WearMyValues #ImAnAmerican."
BACKERS will determine what organization or cause a portion of the profits from Not Red, Not Blue, American will go towards. Go to our Facebook page to submit your favorite charity to the list!
We plan to offer this shirt in charcoal grey, white, and purple! #NotRedNotBlue
This is what a PATRIOT looks like was the inspiration of one of our team while looking at the #AllyLooksLike & #NotRedNotBlue T-shirts at the same time. Over the last few decades, Americans have allowed words like "patriot" to be claimed by different subgroups in our political system. With this design, we challenge those claims. There is more than one way to be a patriot, and we challenge you to reclaim the word. If you've had a hard time feeling like the word "patriot" applies to you, even though you love American, than this is the shirt for you.
The shirt's text reads: "This is what an PATRIOT looks like. Patriots may look different than you expect. #LookDeeper #WearMyValues #ImAPatriot." We're proud to release a design that allows patriots of all shapes, sizes, and colors to show who they are and want they to be.
A portion of the profits from This is what a PATRIOT looks like will benefit veterans assistance organizations, starting with Operation: Homefront. Read more about them and their work on their website and ours.
This shirt is available in red, white, blue, and charcoal grey. #PatriotLooksLike
Liberty's with Her was our first design. It was inspired by the executive order banning entry to the US for people originating in various ways from 7 Middle-Eastern countries.
We stand with all people and their right to be themselves! To practice their religion, wear their choice of clothing, and not be persecuted for those choices. It is not, and never will be, acceptable to prevent a legan US resident from entering our country. These people have followed all the legal rules, and should be treated fairly. It is not acceptable to change the rules, while families are divided, and prevent individuals from coming home. It is not OK to make immigration policy that is based upon fear and business interests instead of reasoned, factual, arguments and data. We stand with Liberty- and Liberty's with Her. #LibertysWithHer
A portion of the profits from Liberty's with Her will go to civil rights & civil liberties organizations standing up against the Executive Orders known as the #MuslimBan, starting with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Read more about them and their work on their website or ours!
The Stickers are thick, die cut, 4" vinyl with a UV laminate layer that will protect the sticker from scratching and being damaged by rain and sunlight. All 5 stickers will be die cut from 4"x4" squares.
The T-shirts are 100% Cotton Men's/Unisex Jersey T's. They are rugged, soft, and well put together. Offered in Men's/Unisex S-XXXL, they should fit most people very comfortably. All of the T-shirt printing will be completed by a local Colorado company.
Kickstarter is an excellent platform for launching products... and has a really poor shopping cart system for ordering multiple products. This is how Wear My Values has chosen to deal with the ordering of multiple products:
During the Campaign, if you want to order more than one item (Yay! Thank you!), please pledge for the most expensive item you wish to buy. This makes sure that the shipping is charged appropriately. Then, add to your pledge the add-on cost of each item (as per the graphic above). Yes, you have to do the math yourself (sorry!).
For example, if you want 3 T-shirts and 3 stickers, click on the pledge level for a T-shirt (the most expensive item you're pledging for), then add $52 (2*$20 + 3*$4) to the pledge amount (bringing you up to $76, including shipping, if you're in the US), and then complete your pledge.
After the Campaign, we will send surveys via BackerKit to collect the information about what color, size, and design that you want for each product. If you did your math wrong, or changed your mind, BackerKit gives you the opportunity to add/change what you want.
The Wear My Values team:
Dan Winterhalter is the founder of Wear My Values. A Mechanical Engineer by profession, Dan has lots of experience bringing new and interesting product ideas to market. Wear My Values brings the joy in creating new products together with the strong desire to impact the world in a positive way, and is exactly the mission-based innovation and creation that Dan has always needed to do.
Aicila Lewis is is Wear My Values’ co-founder. She is a non-profit consultant who has been a social justice activist for over 15 years, and has received a Congressional Certificate of Special Recognition for her community work for the LGBT community.
Becky Chapin is a mixed media artist who uses art as a playground and a way to communicate. The visual expression that art and design allow her is both cathartic and freeing (it can also be maddening.... but that's part of the fun!). Becky enjoys creating new pieces that speak to people and is pleased to be speaking about such relevant and crucial topics.
We've learned a lot from doing our last Kickstarter campaign and have made some small shifts in the budget and planning of this one as a result. Below is the breakdown, by category, of our budget this time around.
- $2991 for T-shirts, stickers, and shipping materials
- $439 for samples of the shirts, business cards, and marketing materials to push the campaign
- $600 for an Artist advance and a Project Manager
- $198 for BackerKit Administrative setup fees
- $670 for Amazon Store setup costs (including UPCs)
- $529 for Kickstarter and Amazon payments administrative fees
We've also learned a lot from our first campaign and will be stretching the timeline a bit this time around. This better reflects the realities of a Kickstarter campaign and apparel fulfillment.
Summary of fulfillment milestones:
- Campaign begins: 4/10
- Campaign ends: 5/8
- Apparel art order submitted to vendor within 48 hours of making our goal, starting our 3 week art-approval timeline
- Funds received: 5/22
- Surveys finalized: 5/24
- Final fulfillment order placed with apparel printer: 5/26
- Printing: 2nd week of June
- Shipping 3rd week of June
At $12,000 in pledges, we'll have enough money to cover the additional expense of offering women's T-shirt sizes as well as the men's/unisex shirts. This requires a larger minimum order size, as well as higher inventory costs, or else we would do it initially. We are VERY hopeful of reaching this goal, so that everyone can have the option of T-shirts sized/fitted appropriately!
If we go even larger, we're hoping to release a sweatshirt or jacket option for the designs as well! Once we get past our first stretch goal, we'll release more information on additional goals.
Risks and challenges
After last month's successful Kickstarter campaign, Wear My Values is familiar with this the process and is ready to go with this campaign. We are using the same local T-shirt supplier that we worked with last campaign. We're trying a new vendor for stickers, but there are a lot of options available if they don't work out.
In regards to fulfillment, we have suppliers ready to go the moment the funding comes through. One of our partners worked for a custom T-shirt manufacturer up until last month, another just started a job working for a sticker manufacturer, and we are currently planning leverage their contacts and resources. While it's possible the timing will slip (something always happens differently than you expect), this project, like our last one, will deliver to all of its backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
