Once upon a time I bought a bus... I had a big fancy dream of selling coffee (during my Shaky Tree days) to people on bikes as they road across the beautiful state of Iowa (RAGBRAI). I was also going to use the bus for all sorts of fun things pertaining to music, coffee, art... and community. Then "life" things happened... and those dreams got buried. In fact, on a lot of levels I got buried. I became afraid to dream big, take risks, or even believe I had it in me to follow through on the smallest of creative endeavors. I became defined by the things that I saw as my failures.
Luckily, my heart didn't stop beating... and I had people in my life that gave me space to rest, but also gave me support to allow my creative (true) self to bubble up on occasion. Maybe you were one of those people... I can't thank you enough!
Over the past year I have done a lot of work unpacking the baggage I have collected over my lifetime... I have let go of things that I no longer need. I came to recognize how weighed down I am by fear, shame, guilt and painful items that hold me back from being... me. The me I want to be. This "unpacking", is a process that will be a life long journey, but it is time to celebrate a turning point!
My goal is to use the journey of bringing my bus back to California as an opportunity to dream big! I plan on documenting the whole trip, and ending up with a soundtrack to the journey (in the form of a CD). It will act as a marker in my life, and hopefully an inspiration for others. This journey will be about sifting through the past, honoring the good and the bad... and moving powerfully into the future.
That is the project! I am going to "pack my bag of simple" (the CD title is Bag of Simple)... with the tools that I need, and go revive my dreams!
For the purpose of this project, those dreams are wrapped up in a bus... and in songs that I have been meaning to record for a very long time. I will use the time on the road to dive into what that looks and sounds like. Some of the recording will be done on the road with the help of talented allies (such as Chad Elliott), and some of it will be done in my home studio when I return. My hope is at the end I will have something to share with others to support them on their journey of unpacking unneeded items... in order to fill themselves with love. Your support will ensure that the final product gets made!
How will your support be put to use? Mostly for the production costs of getting the CD made. I hope to share the process of the trip (photos, video, music, blog), and then someday use the bus as a mobile gallery to show what I created during the trip! My goal for this project is to end up with a soundtrack to my journey, in the form of a CD and artwork... music has such a powerful way of bringing you back to a moment. I want to be able to share that feeling of moving on... of reconnecting with (and moving into) who I want to be, and what I want to carry with me in this world. If the campaign exceeds my funding goal... the project will grow into using the bus to travel and share the story, and hopefully help other people achieve their goals. Maybe I can have a concert/art show in YOUR driveway!
- CD Costs = $2000 (It will be very DIY, with professional help polishing it off... this will also include the cost of production of the CD, 300-500 in pretty eco-wallets)
- Travel = $500 (getting to Iowa, gas back & perhaps beyond... the bus runs on bio-diesel!)
- Supplies/Misc = $350 (art supplies, printing cost and random needs that are sure to come up as the project takes shape on the road)
- Sharing = $150 (this will help put it out into the world, shipping and some promotion of the final product)
Extra = $??? (anything that I raise above and beyond will go towards making the dreams bigger and better... converting the bus to share the experience, better production, more songs (maybe a two disc set!), a DVD, an art book... who knows!?!?)
