Monsters After Hours: A Sorta Scary Book for Kids
When I was a kid, I loved being scared. By books, by movies and TV, by ghost stories at camp. I wanted to carry on that tradition with a scary book that also serves to de-fang the creatures that go bump in the night. Because monsters aren't eating kids 24 hours a day, right? They probably have a lot going on.
Monsters After Hours is about the chores, errands, and other responsibilities that monsters have to deal with in their lives / unlives / afterlives. You'll see a vampire practicing good oral hygiene, goblins chopping firewood and choosing a recipe (they think you'd go great with fennel and fried capers), and a mummy washing his stinky wraps. There are over a dozen monsters included. Oh, and the dang thing rhymes.
There are also some interactive elements. You'll find a spread where you can fill in your own monsters and after-hours moments, as well as some figures you can cut out to use for game pieces or rubber band target practice.
I'm timing this campaign during the MONTH of Halloween (yes, we should celebrate all month long), and I fully, fully intend to get the books to your doors in time for Christmas. I'm working with my printer to ensure this.
For this campaign, I'm raising funds for printing, shipping and shipping supplies, taxes, and all of the other things that go into producing a project of this scale. In addition to books, I'm offering a SLEW of reward tiers that include t-shirts, prints, other books, and m-m-more.
Who the heck am I? I'm Travis Nichols. I've written and illustrated a bunch of books and comics for kids through traditional publishers (Chronicle, Penguin Random House, Macmillan, etc.).
This is the first picture book (and second major release after The HECKADECK) I'm publishing through my own independent press, More Lies Publishing. A big part of not going through a traditional publisher for this one is learning as much as I can about pre-production, working with printers, distribution, and a dozen other angles to the biz. Then I'll be more prepared to start putting out books, comics, and games by artists and writers I love. I can't wait for you to see what's cooking.
Your support means the world (and underworld) to me. Thank you so much.
I created More Lies Publishing to inspire kids and post-kids to be creative and curious through interactive stories and supplies, and I'm so happy that you're here. Tell your pals.
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk is getting the dang things to my loading dock and back out to you super quickly! I'm working with my awesome printer (in Canada) to ensure a speedy turnaround.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
