STABBERS is the first YAA novel (YOUNG ADULT NOVEL for ADULTS)! I say it's the first because I have not seen anything to tell me otherwise. I am aware that there are twilight parodies and such, but I want to be clear that this is not what I intend to create. My novel will use the tropes of a traditional YA stories themes and elements, and blend them together to create something ridiculous, dark and hilarious. I want to push the supernatural over a cliff and send it screaming to its blood-splattered death on the rocks below, only to have it re-animate into something even more insane and deadly.
STABBERS follows the misadventures of an awkward teenage vampire named Pax, who is bitten by a werewolf, thus turning her into a Wampire. She is then killed, becoming a ghost, or a Whostpire (Werewolf/ghost/vampire). This hot supernatural mess of monsters then falls in love with a lanky, high school loner named Derek Stabbers, a C student by day and vampire hunter by night. When Pax decides to get to know him better, she possesses him, soon realizing she has no idea how to get out of his body. Can these two put aside their differences and fall in love while at the same time share a body? And can they also protect their town from a professional gang of monster hunters lead by their heartless leader, Axe Handle?
While I am very confident in my ability to make Stabbers into a single bat-shit crazy novel, I have enough ides, twists and turns to spread it out into a trilogy. If we meet our goal of $13,000 then a single novel will be written, but if we make our stretch goals (below), that will show me there is real interest in the series, I will push these characters deeper and darker into two more hilarious books.
Who am I?
My name is Travis. Hi. I'm an award winning writer and director of four feature films and hundreds of short films. 95% of my work deals with the dark, strange, beautiful and hilarious. Below are a few samples of my work so you might get a feel for the kind of crazy that I am.
4/2/13 - STABBERS FIRST UPDATE + SONG!
Dearest Kickstarter community-types - I promised my backers that if we hit the $2,000 mark last week that I would SING everyone's name who made it in under the deadline. That was the first 65 backers! I am a man of my word, and here is the video proving it! The NEW deadline to get your name sung is to hit the $5,000 mark by this Friday (April 5th at midnight). Pledge to this project by then and your name is next to be rocked!
4/20/13 - Stabbers Update + 2nd song!!!
As promised, here is the 2nd video I made singing the names of the next 72 pledgers. We set a deadline to raise the funds and you met that deadline. This (on top of your incentives) is your hilariously weird reward.
Our new deadline to have your name sung (note: you can have your name sung again if you increase your pledge over $10.00), is the most obvious of deadlines...the ACTUAL deadline itself. If we meet our goal (or more) of $13,000 by this Saturday, April 27th, then I will sing the rest of my pledgers names! Spread the love about Stabbers, and let's make this book a reality!!!
Risks and challenges
I think the biggest risk and challenge for me, or anyone trying to tackle this type of humor, is good storytelling. Since the ideas are so ridiculous and huge, the characters must be as grounded in reality as possible in order to make the comedy blend perfectly with this darkly, off-axis world. I've been telling these types of stories for a long time, and I am confident I have the passion and creative juices to create a dizzy universe that feels stable.
I am an independent artist, so my time is spent writing. Once the goal is accomplished through this campaign, I will be working feverishly on getting to THE END, and making sure everything is as fun and insane as it can be so that I can get a copy into your hands and melt your brain. Allow me this opportunity to entertain you, and I promise not to f@#k it up.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
