Traveller5 is the ultimate edition of the Traveller science-fiction role-playing game: rules and concepts you never thought possible.
If you are new to this Project, keep reading from here; if you are already a Backer, scroll down to NEWS.
Marc Miller's Far Future Enterprises is raising funds for the legendary Fifth Edition of Traveller on Kickstarter! Traveller was born July 22, 1977 as a now-iconic Little Black Box with three Little Black Books. No one knew it was coming when the first copies showed up at the Origins Game Convention in Staten Island. In fact, D&D was itself just getting off the ground; there were no [significant] science-fiction role-playing games to speak of. And Traveller (it’s now called Classic Traveller to distinguish it from the various editions that followed) had its own quirks: for example, your character could die during character generation, for example.
This is Traveller’s 35th year, and Marc has worked for several years on what he calls the Ultimate Edition: Traveller5. It includes so many things that players have asked for, or that have been imperfectly handled previously. In fact, Marc recently said there are now systems and chapters that he didn’t know how to design way back then. But he does now, and they are included. T5 has technology beyond TL 15, clones, robots, computers, artificial intelligence, QREBS (!), alien senses, Flux. It has a whole series of easy-to-use Makers: GunMaker, VehicleMaker, ArmorMaker, RobotMaker, SophontMaker, ThingMaker. It includes mapping of star systems and worlds; there's ever the MOARN caveat: Map Only As Really Necessary, or referees would spend all their time just making maps of worlds and systems. There's a rationalized section on Psionics, and more, much more.
We have a series of Rewards at support levels that fully engage players and characters in the system: nobility and land grants; characters or personal ships in examples in the text, even illustrations. And for almost everyone, there is the Wall of Heroes.
This Project is a labor of love, and we invite you to be part of it. Help us make this next edition of Traveller the best it can be. You are reading this now; share it with your friends… those guys you played Traveller with once upon a time. Let them know so they can reserve a copy too. Spread the word!
Thank you. It means a lot to me to be able to do this, and with your help, I can.
- Marc Miller
Changes to the Rewards:
Pledge $10 (or more). The Number of Wallpapers in Swag Bronze has increased to FOUR. There’s the iconic Scout in Water, and we have added Scout in Wilds, Scout in Space, and my personal favorite (it’s on my iPhone): the Solomani Fleet Courier.
Pledge $25 (or more). Did we tell you that we'll have a video (Swag Silver) of your name being carved on the Alabaster Cliffs?
Pledge $50 (or more). We have changed (increased) the number of Traveller Dice in Swag Gold from two Black to one each of Red, Black, and White. Remember that this Swag is included in every Pledge at this level or higher.
Pledge $51 (or more). At this level, you will receive the Traveller5 CDROM. The CDROM includes an electronic version of the Imperial Scout and the Free Trader Beowulf. Accompanying the CDROM is a credit-card-size membership card in the Travellers' Aid Society with a special supporting rule, your personal or character name, and the UWP for a world of the Imperium. We also include an Imperial Cr25 coin.
Pledge $100 (or more). At this level you receive the Traveller5 Hardcover Rules Book. Every Book includes the CDROM, and also includes: A printed deck plan (23 x 35 inch) of an Imperial Scout/ Courier. A printed deck plan (also 23 x 25 inch) of the Free Trader Beowulf. A set of 12 color ship images by Traveller artist Jesse Degraff. Printed (one color-black) end leaves (those are the inside front and back covers) for the book: useful charts and tables. Finally, this book includes two Imperial Cr25 coins (one for the book and one because the CDROM is also included at this level).
The Player's Book
By popular demand, we have committed to producing the Traveller5 Player's Book: a handy digest-size rules reference tailored for use by Players but without the (primarily) Referee’s rules. We expect to produce a printed version in Spring 2013, but every Backer who orders a Book will receive a link to an Ebook version when it is complete.
Our Final Stretch Goal- $250,000
When we reach $250,000, we will be able to add a Knighthood every Book. There are 9074 worlds in the Imperium and each Knighthood will be randomly associated with a world. Since a Baron or a Marquis or a Count should also be a Knight, the Knighthood will also be added to the Noble editions.
We have some nice items that some of you (but not all of you) want. We call them Options. You edit your Pledge to cover them, and we include them in your shipment.
In most cases, the options you select will fit into the Priority Mail Medium Carton we plan to use, so there is no additional shipping charge. If we need to, we will bump you up to the Priority Mail Large Carton (at no extra cost); we apply this to Canada and International as well. If the options you select mean we have to add a second carton, you will need to increase your Pledge by the International Shipping Charge (again), but that is going to be a huge order.
If you have a small package (basically it doesn’t have a book) then there is no additional shipping charge. If you Pledged at the $1 level (or any of the levels that don’t ship ordinarily anything), the same applies; we’ll cover shipping. If the shipment is International, you will need to increase your Pledge by $7 (we’ll cover the rest).
The Options we have available are:
Second Book. We can include a Second Book. The Second Book includes all the Swag of a $100 Pledge Book: the CDROM, the Cr25 coins, the three Traveller Dice, and the Scout and Beowulf Deck Plans. If we meet the Knighthood Stretch Goal, it will include a Knighthood. Add $75. For example, your current Pledge is the Imperial Space Noble edition; you can add a Second Book for $75. You can add a Third Book for $75 also.
Double Order. We can include TWO of everything (assuming it isn’t a Limited Availability item). We double everything that you have selected as a reward. Add 75% of the base pledge amount. For example, TWO Imperial Space Noble Editions: The first is a Pledge of $150; the second adds $112.5. You can add any of the (non-limited) Editions below your current Pledge level.
Jump Drive Instead of CDROM. We substitute it for the CDROM. Add $10. Caution: do not use this Jump Drive within 100 diameters of a gravity source.
Second CDROM. Add $35. We include it with your shipment.
Classic Traveller Black T Shirt. Carefully crafted by an expert T-Shirt maker. Silk Screened on Black. You will need to tell us a size. Add $22.
NEW Traveller UPP Black T Shirt. Carefully crafted by an expert T-Shirt maker. Silk Screened on Black. You will need to tell us a size. Add $22.
4518th Lift Infantry Red T-Shirt. Based on a limited edition of 5 that was produced in 1981 (that one was a golden yellow; this one will be red). Add $22.
Traveller Dice. The new Traveller dice set. Includes 10 Black, 1 Red, and 1 White (twelve dice total). You also still get the three dice Swag you are already eligible for. Add $15.
Bulk Dice. "IF" you order the Dice Option, you can add additional dice at $1 each. Specify color (red, black, white, and [if we reach the stretch goal, yellow]).
Additional Cr25 Coins. Add them as options. $1 each.
Yes. We can include a Second Book. If we meet the Knighthood Stretch Goal, it will include a Knighthood. Add $75. For example, your current Pledge is the Imperial Space Noble edition; you can add a second book for $75. Note that to select the Second Book Option, you must already be getting a First Book.
The support of the T5 CDROM people is part of what has brought us to this point. We hope that each of you will participate in the T5 Kickstarter Project, but whether or not you do, each of you will receive the Final T5 on CDROM. Plus some yet-to-be-finalized Swag. Thanks to all of you.
Some Kickstarter Projects have different Pledge Levels for various outside-the-USA destinations. We have carefully researched shipping, both domestic and foreign, and come up with the following plan. All pledges at $100 or more are budgeted for about $15 for shipping, including double boxing to avoid damage, and with room for you to add various options (as available at the end of the Project). For Canada, we ask that you increase your Pledge by $25 and we'll ship your package Priority Mail International. For the rest of Terra, we ask that you increase your pledge by $40 and we'll ship Priority Mail International.
For shipment to LEO (via Virgin Galactic) please add $200,000 (excess will be refunded).
Upon discovery of Jump Drive, no additional charge to points Coreward.
We had plans for the PDF /CDROM version as a Stretch Goal; we wanted to reach base funding first. However, there were enough people disappointed not to see it that we've added it now. Look at Pledge Level $51.
This CDROM is included with any Pledge which includes a Book.
There is no direct way to specify the options you want until we survey at the end of the Project. You should edit your Pledge to include the price of what you want as Options. When the Project ends, we'll specifically ask you what Options you want.
We have an option for the Traveller Dice Set. Add $15 to your Pledge and we'll include it. If you are already at a level which includes Swag Gold, you will receive the Dice Option plus the Swag Dice.
