Become a Part of Lucid Dreaming History!
We've put together an ambitious project aimed to bring you one of the most important and unique books on lucid dreaming ever written.
We'll create two books in one: the first ever complete English translation of the world's original book on lucid dreaming, and a brand-new exploration of lucid dreaming from an amazing selection of the world's foremost experts on lucid dreams.
We'll be spanning eons of lucid dream research to bring you lost hidden gems and cutting-edge research. This is a book like no other and, with your backing, together we can unlock the mysteries of lucid dreaming.
A Book Unlike Any Other
So what exactly can I expect from this book?
To start we'll be creating the first complete English translation of the world’s very first book on lucid dreaming: Dreams and the Ways to Direct Them: Practical Observations (1867), by Frenchman Marquis d'Hervey de Saint-Denys (1822-1892). This profoundly important historical text on lucid dreaming contains fascinating lost insights and techniques that will turbo charge your lucid dreaming practices. Just how important is this book? Well, let’s just say it’s the book in which the term ‘lucid dream’ was first used!
On top of this we'll write a completely new text to accompany the work of Saint-Denys. This second book, written by our author and project founder, Daniel Love, will contain contributions from a dazzling selection of today's foremost lucid dreaming experts. This brand-new content will span eons of conscious dream exploration; from ancient dreaming practices to state-of-the-art lucid dream research and technologies; including lucid dream induction devices, techniques, supplements and much more. This will be absolutely unique content unavailable anywhere else!
Not only will our book finally mesh the lost history of lucidity to its exciting potential future, it will be a rare melting pot of ideas from some of today's greatest minds. All of this will be invaluable to your own mastery of lucid dreaming. Of course, you'll also receive one of our fantastic rewards!
So far we are proud to have confirmed contributions from the following experts:

So tell me more about lucid dreaming...
Lucid dreaming can be described as a unique state of consciousness in which you realise that you are dreaming while you are dreaming. Many feel it is one of the most wonderful and awe-inspiring of human experiences. Once you learn to be aware within your dreams, you will be imbued with an awesome creative power, allowing you to explore the universe that exists inside your own mind. You'll discover the true meaning of freedom!
Our book will be unlike anything else and will offer you the opportunity to master and explore lucid dreaming with a vast and comprehensive understanding. You’ll hold in your hands the culmination of generations of exploration.
We're passionate about helping you unlock the potential of your dreams and to do so we'll need to travel back in time...
The Birth of Lucid Dreams - Where Our Journey Begins...
Our journey begins at the very dawn of lucid dreaming, back before the term lucid dream even existed. It starts with one man, the father of modern lucid dreaming, a Frenchman by the name of Marquis d'Hervey de Saint-Denys. The year is 1867, the year in which his book, the world's very first book on lucid dreaming, is to be published. Within its pages, for the first time ever, lucid dreaming found its name.
His book Dreams and the Ways to Direct Them: Practical Observations is a lost masterpiece, the ground-breaking original work on lucid dreaming. The book is astounding, it's one man’s lone journey into the world of dreams. Long before you could simply jump online and learn the basics of dream control, Saint-Denys was able to teach himself to become a nightly lucid dreamer, simply through careful observation and experimentation.
Saint-Denys was a pioneer in the truest sense of the word. In a time before Freud had written his famous Interpretation of Dreams and long before even the most preliminary research into lucid dreaming had begun, Saint-Denys was performing elaborate and intricate explorations of the dream world. Indeed, many of the experiments and methods invented by Saint-Denys are only now being re-discovered by modern dream enthusiasts and researchers. There are many more within this text just waiting to be discovered.
He shares his techniques and experiences in a beautiful, almost poetic language, he even invents the term 'lucid dreaming' to help explain his experiences. But the book is more than that: it is the birth of lucid dreaming. This is far more than just another guidebook, this is history in your hands, a history that may well change the future of lucid dreaming.
For experienced lucid dreamers, this is a treasure waiting to be unearthed. For those of you new to the subject, this honest, vibrant and fascinating guide will aid you in unlocking the power of lucid dreams. You'll connect directly to the thoughts and mind of the father of lucid dreaming - you couldn't ask for a more esteemed guide. Your time-travel to 1867 will be the start of an amazing adventure, who knows where it will lead?
Unbelievably, this book has been trapped in its native French for 147 years: a complete English translation has never been made. It's our goal to to change that!
For a pledge of only £20 you'll receive the full English copy of this ground-breaking book and the knowledge that you've played a vital part in the history of lucid dreaming!
Our goal is simple: to get this amazing guidebook into your hands!
By bringing you the lost gems of Saint-Denys’ work and the insights from today’s very best lucid dream experts, we're certain you'll discover whole new depths to your lucid dream adventures.
Our priority is to bring the work of Saint-Denys to the English speaking world. In order to do this, we've assembled a dedicated team:
Daniel Love, our project's founder, is one of the world's foremost experts on lucid dreaming and author of Are You Dreaming: Exploring Lucid Dreams: A Comprehensive Guide. Daniel will oversee the entire project, consult on the translation, write the accompanying content and liaise with our worldwide team of expert contributors.
Our translator, professional linguist Amita Raval, will carefully and methodically bring the 1867 text to life, striving to keep Saint-Denys original vision fully intact.
Louis Dyer, our artist, will recreate the beautiful original cover art, breathing vibrant new life into this lost masterpiece.

Risks and challenges
The lucid dream community is a thriving and diverse world. However, we've yet to reach "the mainstream", and as such, the majority of publishers are unlikely to back all but the most simplistic guidebooks on the topic. An historical work such as this, whilst invaluable to lucid dreamers, is a gamble to mainstream publishers who assess the value of a work on profit alone. KickStarter transcends this outdated philosophy and allows the community to bring to life that which adds beauty, knowledge and real value to the world. As dedicated, professional and lifelong lucid dreamers we are certain that this work of Saint-Denys' is the single most important book on lucid dreaming ever written, and we believe that with you the community behind us, we can bring this dream to life.
Our priority above all else is to create a faithful translation of the original vision of Saint-Denys. To do this requires time, patience and dedication.
Our translation will be more than simply converting one language to another, it will be a fluid and creative process involving intensive research. To make it the very best we can, we will liaise with worldwide experts, include extensive notes and interpretations within the book, and potentially visit sites that were relevant to Saint-Denys' original research.
When approaching an historical text as important as this, there is no room for cutting corners or risking losing sight of the original vision. To avoid this, we have meticulously assessed our budget and set a goal that realistically reflects the costs, risks and challenges we will face. It will allow us to truly dedicate our time towards achieving our aim.
In addition, we have set ourselves a goal of 12 months to complete the project. The initial six months will be spent researching, translating, writing and compiling the work. The following 6 months will be spent focused on the more practical matters of a publication, such as layout, design, printing and distribution. This will require a great deal of work and focus but we are a meticulous team and, from inception to completion, we will give this project our all.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

(This list may grow as the campaign progresses)
Yes absolutely. Kickstarter requests that a project is listed using the currency of the country in which it originated. So, as we're British, you're seeing pounds. However, Kickstarter is a global phenomenon and backing our project is open to everyone.
We get nothing,
you pay nothing
and the project won't have the required funding to go ahead.
(Obviously, we don't want this to happen!!)
As you can see, every pledge is absolutely vital to the success of the campaign!
If you're thinking a small pledge won't make a difference, remember they really do all add up - it may well be just the nudge we need to reach our goal! So please don't hesitate!
Kickstarter is a very well established and respected website. Signing up to make a pledge really is absolutely painless and takes very little time. In fact the majority of our backers so far are first time Kickstarter users!
Simply click on the big green "Back This Project" button at the top right of the campaign page, choose how much you want to pledge and which reward you'd like. The rest is as simple as making any purchase online.
The big difference is you won't be charged for your pledge until the campaign is complete (29th June 2014) and ONLY if we reach our goal of £18,000.
Once you decide to make your pledge, Kickstarter will guide you painlessly through the very simple process.
Your card will be charged only when the project reaches its funding deadline (29th June) and if we reach our target. If the project does not reach its funding goal, your card is never charged.
If you've backed the project and are seeing a charge on your bank statement, what you are likely seeing is a temporary authorization of funds. The time it takes for an authorization to clear varies on the bank, but typically takes 1 - 3 days. You will not be charged until the project has ended successfully.
The Amazon checkout payment option is only available to campaigns that originate in the US. As our campaign is British, you will check out through Kickstarter itself.
Yes! Anyone can pledge to Kickstarter projects, from anywhere in the world. The only requirement is a major credit card.
We've explored this topic in detail in a recent article over at the World of Lucid Dreaming website, you can find out more here: http://www.world-of-lucid-dreaming.com/who-really-coined-the-term-lucid-dream.html
You should find that all reward tiers have their estimated delivery date listed beneath them. As this is a very indepth project we've established that it shall take approximately 12 months to complete, so we've set our delivery date to July 2015 to account for this.
Once the campaign completes we'll keep all backers regularly updated with the progress of the project - it'll be an exciting shared journey!
All books above a £35 pledge will be signed by the author and project founder Daniel Love and translator Amita Raval.
Our aim is for a complete and authentic translation - attempting to stick as closely to the mood and style of Saint-Denys' as possible. This has never been done before.
However, in 1982 there was a very incomplete translation by Nicholas Fry and
Morton Schatzman, MD. This work is missing large portions of the original text and the style of translation deviates greatly from the colourful nature of Saint-Denys original. Many consider it an adaptation rather than an authentic direct translation. This work itself is now out of print and fetches second hand prices often exceeding £1000.
Clearly there is a strong need to bring the work of Saint-Denys to life after 147 years without a complete and authentic translation!
Just ask us!
Click the "Contact me" button that appears above the rewards (towards the top right of the page).
We're here to help and we will do our absolute best to answer your questions as quickly as possible.
