About

Does Indianapolis want this? We're using Kickstarter to find out! Our goal is to build a classroom that would allow us to offer year-round classes for 2014 if we raise at least $10,000 by midnight at our one year anniversary celebration, on September 5th.

So, the facts first. What is Trade School?

At Trade School, students barter for instruction. Our instructors teach in exchange for basic items from students. Students sign up for classes by agreeing to meet the teacher's barter needs. Trade School is not free, in fact, you can’t really put a price on each experience. The items and skills that are exchanged are priceless and the value is determined by both parties involved.

Trade School originated in New York when three of the five co-founders of OurGoods were given an opportunity to have a wild brainstorm session about a possible barter storefront. They decided that “barter for instruction” had a lot of potential, so from February 25th to March 1st, 2010, Trade School had its first session at 'GrandOpening' in the Lower East Side of NY. Over the course of 35 days, more than 800 people participated in 76 single session classes. The popularity of these classes inspired the group to continue, and they held another session of classes the following year through a successful Kickstarter. In 2012, a man named Or Zubalsky said, “I want to help you make a system to share with anyone in the world.” Two and a half months later, Or had created the software through another successful Kickstarter that would allow Trade Schools from all over the world to form.

Why do we want a space?

We want to turn a space in Indianapolis into a community space and classroom that is accessible to everyone. We're passionate about improving our city, activating empty spaces and connecting neighborhoods to their community. We believe a space such as this can do that for Indianapolis.  Many people have asked us if we would ever offer classes year-round, and we would love to have that option, but we're going to need your help! In addition to our Trade School classes, we will host individuals and organizations in our community. The opportunity to host a class, social event, project collaboration or workshop whenever you want would be at your fingertips. All events will be organized and promoted via our website and social networks, which would allow for a consistent registration process, exchange and guaranteed attendance. Most importantly, nothing in our space will ever cost money to attend. We are entirely community driven, and we want a space created for the community, by the community.

What's been happening at Trade School Indy?

We've been growing, & here's a timeline to prove it!

September 2012: Trade School Indianapolis launches in Indianapolis through donated space at the City Market. Yelp, NUVO & Sun King join as sponsors. We host 8 classes.

October 2012: We win $410 at Dreamapolis' first ever Pitchfeast! This allowed us to purchase a projector for our classes and for class supplies we couldn't muster ourselves.

November - December 2012: We start our second 'semester' at the City Market. We host 11 classes. We host our first Hoosier Hob which is our version of a back-in-the-day barter swap.

February - March 2013: We decide to come back for a third time! We partner with Indy Reads Books and Indy's Kitchen as a venue partner. We host 27 classes, along with our first cooking class. Big Car service center hosts classes at their venue through our website. We host our first on-site class at Great Fermentations.

June - July 2013: It's Summer time! This time around we have 32 classes on the calendar. We host our first outside exercise class, an 8-week workshop at IndyFringe and acquire Little Red Door as a venue partner. We create a waitlist because of the full classes. Crazy!

Over 600 students during the course of these six months have participated in 78 single session or continuous classes. Classes have typically ran for an hour and a half and ranged from Food Gardening to Cocktails and The Amazing Honey Bee to Constitutional Law. In exchange for instruction, teachers have received everything from vintage pyrex and wine to cool stamps and fresh farmer's market produce.

How have we done this without funding for a year?

Our passion for the Indianapolis community has driven us to organize Trade School Indy. We have volunteered all of our extra time to Trade School in order to organize these classes and be involved in the community as much as possible. Stevi Stoesz, Linda Gilkerson and Alyssa Newerth generously offered us their space when we had nowhere to go. Countless other organizations and people in Indianapolis have also been involved in helping us spread the word about Trade School. We are so grateful for their generosity and will continue to host classes at our sponsors venues as long as they will let us, promoting their unique brands along the way.

What would $10,000 do for us?

We would be able to host a full year of classes for 2014 rather than six months of classes a year. $10,000 would give us the freedom to build & design our own classroom that could also operate as a library, craft room or even a movie theatre! It could be anything that the community wanted. We will also be able to provide any resources to our teacher that they may need to elevate their class experience. Once we build our classroom, it will also be entirely "mobile". We could bring Trade School to any area of Indianapolis for a few months at a time to engage other communities and neighborhoods. This would provide them with resources to host whatever they would like while we were there.

We love our students, teachers and Indianapolis more than you can imagine. We are a community full of curious, rigorous, and compassionate people who love sharing what we've learned with our fellow neighbors.

What would you want to host in our space?
