PLEDGES ARE ELIGIBLE FOR TAX-DEDUCTION!

“Dancing Arches”, a colorful and vibrant sculpture, was selected by Lancaster’s Public Art Advisory Board (PAAB) to be installed in the newly renovated Rodney Park. The artist, Randy Walker, uses the concept of arches as an invitation to enter and move through space to discover something new. He notes that arch forms are woven throughout Lancaster’s history, geography, and urban fabric-- from the grand brick facade marking the entry at the downtown Central Market to the narrow passageways between row houses on Coral Street.

The sculpture, a series of varying tubular metal arches, will offer a unique view from every vantage point, its colors overlapping and combining. Seen from Third Street, the sculpture will be a portal to the splashing pool beyond; looking from inside the park, the arches frame the intersection of Rodney and Third Streets. And at night the sculpture’s colorful arches will be illuminated from within, creating a soft, glowing beacon.

This new public artwork will celebrate Rodney Park’s renewed vitality. This half acre park was once covered in asphalt and predominately served as a parking lot for visitors to the Senior Center. The renovations have replaced much of the asphalt with grass areas and permeable paving. This fits in well with the City’s effort to reduce storm water runoff and prevent further pollution from overflow into the Conestoga River. An outdated pool in the Southwest corner of the park has been replaced with a colorful new interactive water spray area and a rubber surface space with children’s play equipment.

The City of Lancaster has made a commitment to incorporate public art in multiple public parks and various other locations throughout the city as part of its Strategic Plan. The artwork selected for Rodney Park was recommended by a five-member project planning committee after a public meeting and postings on social media. The committee received qualifications from 67 artists. “Dancing Arches” was selected for its artistic quality, vision, and durability.

Lancaster’s PAAB is seeking to raise $27,000 for this project. An additional $25,000 has already been secured. The artwork will be located beside the new water spray park where Rodney and Third Streets meet. If you get a chance, please check out the new park and the artwork location. The members of the PAAB believe this is an exciting project, and we hope you’ll be a part of making it possible.

Risks and challenges

There are no foreseeable risks or challenges other than not reaching our funding goal. Renovation on the park has been completed and there is a designated area prepared for the art. The artist and design has been selected, and feedback on Facebook and from community meetings was very supportive and favorable for the project. Half of the funds have already been raised, and raising the remaining half is the last step before we can break ground on the project!
