About

TOYLOOM LOGO
TOYLOOM LOGO

How wonderful would it be if a favorite drawing from your child, or grandchild could be transformed into a real 3-dimensional "Toy" that could be kept, displayed, and cherished forever? Toyloom makes your children's artwork collectible like never before.

Max's Original Drawing
Max's Original Drawing

Oftentimes, after a favorite drawing has finished it's time on the refrigerator door, it is assigned to a keepsake box or filed away. Parents, grandparents, and special friends of the child will often keep these to take out, admire, and remember the special creation of a child. Imagine how special that princess a child drew becomes when she is a Barbie Designer 20 years later. Priceless...Possible!

Funding Toyloom will allow us to build an initial quantity of over 150 Toylooms for children. When we hit this total, we will be able to create a website that will showcase this artwork and accomplish our goal of making toys for children one-at-a-time. The website Gallery will be displayed for all who contribute to see the transition and process of making collectible memories for kids around the world, with their own art.

Currently Hot Buttered Elves (www.hotbutteredelves.com) is sponsoring the rapid prototype machines to help Jojo, Jenai and Lindsey get this magical dream off the ground.

They are recent graduates from Otis College of Art and Design in the Toy and Digital Arts programs, and we all came together to create something very magical. They have the heart and education to make this happen, and Hot Buttered Elves brings the experience of materials and assemblies to make this a sustainable business.  Once we hit the $15,000 goal, the business model works, the volume breaks on the materials pencil out, and we can start making this great product run. We plan on creating the first 150 to showcase how it is possible to make toys one-at-a-time instead of going with the mass foreign manufacturing model. Our goal will prove that this is possible, and the fact that they will be made in the USA is our personal pledge to our economy.  We appreciate your pledges to support this goal so we can create something wonderful for children and families. The goal of the first 150 units will also allow us to build the website to showcase the operation, and the artwork that your children have created. The gallery will be a museum or collection of items that will inspire parents as much as the children, and will show us what kids are thinking these days, what kind of toys, heroes, and dreams they have from different places in the world.

At Hot Buttered Elves, we have been making toys, prototypes, and inventions for over 18 years for toy companies like Mattel, Lucasfilm, Disney, Spinmaster, and Hasbro. Our knowledge and experience in this industry has opened the door for the Toyloom possibilities, and the passion that Jojo, Jenai, and Lindsey bring is magical.

So let's look at toys for a minute. Even though a Toyloom is a toy-heirloom, it is also a piece of art. So is a toy. The magic that any toy brings to a child is in the attachment that a child gives the toy. So imagine how proud and strong an attachment will be when it comes from the child. It can be a character, a car, a doll, or a widget, but the emotional attachment comes from within the child, and is reinforced by you. We have all seen toys made for the mass in runs of 100,000 units each. They come and go, some break quicker than others, foreign economies grow, and children go through toys faster and faster. Our goal is to build something that will stay with each child, and empower them for years to come. When you put your child's artwork on the wall, you give them confidence and let them know that you care, support, and love them. A Toyloom will do this in a magical way. We have seen it work, and it is a beautiful experience for both the parent and child.

The artwork is important. We believe that artwork created by children between the age of 4 and 10 years old will be perfect for a Toyloom. Some children have greater skills than others, but the key point is that they will create something unique, special, and personal. We must maintain that the artwork that we receive to model is drawn by children, and not their parents or Uncle Arty the Disney artist. We reserve the right to approve/reject the artwork prior to starting the project. Children know what they want, and they will tell you through their artwork. They may draw a Supermom with a cape, or grandma dancing on a turtle, but they will love what they have created. When they see it in 3D and can tell a story, they will love it even more.

The frames that we have created are from our history of sculpting the original 3D Graphic Sculpted Movie Posters. As seen below, this was a highly collectible product that ranged from Disney, Lucasfilm, Universal, Marvel and so many others. Our frames are similar in detail the way they are sculpted, and are completely 3D to enhance the experience.

Our Shadowbox frame is the most basic and convenient way to display the true character illustrated by your child. This simple approach positions the Toyloom character on the top, and the original artwork below with the child's information. We have many colors, like blue, pink, yellow, white, and black.

Our Comic Book frame is a sculpted stack of comics about 1 inch thick with your 3D Toyloom character popping through like a super hero. You can personalize it with a catch phrase, and name of the character. Of course your child's name will appear at the bottom as the creator!

Our Storybook frame is an open book with the pages displaying your original artwork on one side, a story, and the 3D Toyloom on the next page. You can see and read the story in the picture below. Your child's name will appear in the story. A small Book Fairy brings the drawing to life on the next page. Our US craftsmanship is very apparent as each one is hand painted by professional toy design artists here in Los Angeles, assembled, and shipped to you.

Our history of creating collectible artwork over the years allows us to make Toyloom a reality. Our designs and offering will grow after we master these first few hundred pieces, and prove our goal of making toys for kids one-at-a-time.

We look forward to making something very special for you, and your child, and sending you a link to a world of toys that kids have created with their own hearts and dreams.

Thank you for reading this, and for contributing toward such an empowering goal.

Peace!

The Toyloom Team

Risks and challenges

Our approach to Toyloom comes from years of prototyping and assembling production operations to achieve economic scales of return. We are quite aware of the challenges that can come, and we are preparing. Here are our forecasts of challenges and resolutions:

1. Volume of Orders. This is a happy problem, and can only be solved by increasing our internal staffing and equipment. This takes time to accomplish, and deeper investments, but is possible to overcome. Initially, we will set these Kickstarter orders as our first ones to accomplish, and if funded at the $15,000, we will be able to make them all by April, 2013. If the limit of 360 is reached, then we will be able to take a larger step toward a larger operation. So place your orders now. It will be first come, first served.

2. How will you submit artwork? When we are funded, we will contact your email and send you a link to fill out and upload artwork. You are required to send it back to us no later than the 15th of February 2013 to have your product made for this Kickstarter Project, and we will remind you. While we reserve the right to reject artwork based on time and complexity, we believe that this would only be in extreme cases.

3. Digital Modeling - Given that the most important part of this program is to model the artwork correctly, we have designed a perfect workflow to create the models with our current 3D modeling software. We have modelers in house to maintain the integrity of all of the 3D modeling, and we have pulled together a team of outsourced modelers that will work on a fixed rate per model to achieve the 3D model. We are always looking for great modelers, and if you are interested, please contact me and I will send you a test character. We have a strong supply of modelers from the forums and local communities that we have used in the past, and all are well qualified. They have passed our tests, and are ready to start. It is a great way for them to make money doing what they love, get faster, and grow with us.

4. Buying More Rapid Prototyping machines - This will require further investment from investors, and we will be open for conversations. In the meantime, we have 2 machines in house, and have back-up volume relationships with bureaus to keep the cost in the calculated area.

5. Made in the USA - This is an expensive challenge, but we firmly believe that we can make this great manufacturing model work for this run. This product is an elegant sculpture, and collectible. They are handmade by great artists from the film, toy, and digital modeling arenas. We will maintain that these products are made in the US, with US materials. We are exploring green materials made from Soy for our resin now, but this will take a while. We will create jobs, and a great product. Your Toyloom will be made in the USA.
