We're Suzana Harcum and Owen White— the artist and writer behind Tripping Over You, a bi-weekly gay webcomic!
We're a married lesbian couple, we love making comics together, and we especially love telling stories about LGBT couples. Our comic Tripping Over You is about two young men who start a fumbling romantic relationship— and trip over each other's feet along the way.
We post pages of TOY for free online at www.trippingoveryou.com, but sometimes we collect a bunch of chapters and put them in a graphic novel— and now we'd like to do that again! We're starting this campaign in order to self-publish Volume 4 of our comic and make it available in print.
We’d like to print our fourth book in the series as our fourth Kickstarter project! (Here are the links to our previous campaigns: one, two, and three.) Each time we self-publish a volume of our story through Kickstarter, the process becomes more and more familiar for us. We’re ready to take what we've learned from the last three books and offer an even better experience for potential backers.
We really like the way Kickstarter's back-end lets us organize and keep track of backers; it gives us a really efficient platform to be able to take pre-orders for the new volume. It also lets us offer incentive rewards to our backers for reaching certain goals.
What's in Volume 4?
Volume 4 will contain chapters 11, 12, 13, and 14 of Tripping Over You (all currently available digitally on our website), along with the mini-comics between each of these four chapters. The end result will be 168 pages of full-color comics, up to some of the most recent (as of writing this) pages of our comic.

How are you printing the book?
We're still in love with the quality that our previous printer, PrintNinja, comes out with— and we'll be going through them again for Volume 4! Volume 4 will match our previous three books in dimensions (5.5"x7.75", Perfect Bound). The interior will contain high quality offset printing, in full color.
How did you decide on your funding goal?
To follow the same model as our previous Kickstarter, we’re interested in printing 1000 copies of Volume 4 to start. Ordering in a batch of 1000 copies brings the printing cost of each book down, allowing us to keep Volume 4 the same price as our previous three volumes— making the book more affordable for both us and our buyers.
Our goal of $7,500 will allow us to print 1000 copies of Volume 4, as well as to cover shipping costs for the minimum number of backers we would need to fund this campaign. Any potential funds we raise beyond that point will go toward unlocking bonus merchandise as stretch goals— or to adding freebies automatically to each tier that involves physical shipping! We'll post more information and some preview images for each new thing we add.
Any Kickstarter exclusives this time around?
Absolutely! Here's a list of all items unlocked in this campaign:
11"x17" MATCHING POSTERS (ONE BY EACH ARTIST)
All physical copies of Volume 4 will include both of these 11"x17" posters - one by each of the artists! They will be folded and tucked into the cover of your soft cover book for safe keeping.
All tiers that include a physical copy of Volume 4 will receive an I Kick'd Toy button as a Kickstarter exclusive!
ADD-ON ITEMS AND NEW TIERS
ADD ON ITEM: WEDDING INVITE
We've added a new tier— a chance to feature yourself or your original character in Chapter 16 of Tripping Over You! Your character will be in attendance at Archie's wedding as one of his guests! Each backer's character will appear multiple times throughout the chapter (and will help us out with lots of venue scenes). This tier will also include all other rewards from the campaign, including an original art commission!
Note: This tier does not involve an actual trip to Maybengland— only your likeness may attend! ♥ Any original characters must fit the universe (please PM us if you have any questions about this), and cannot belong to someone besides the Kickstarter backer without their owner's express permission.
ADD ON ITEM: NEW T-SHIRT DESIGN
One of Liam's favorite shirts is one he's borrowed from Milo without asking— and now you can borrow it too! EASY AS 1-2-3 STUDIOS is the name of Milo's mother's dance studio, and he has plenty of their official merch lying around for Liam to cozy up in when he can't find his own shirt. Available in yellow with black print and black with yellow print; we'll have you pick your color scheme in your Kickstarter survey!
ADD ON ITEM: PERSONALIZED BOOKPLATES
Personalized bookplates are also available through some of our tiers— here's an image to preview what these bookplates look like!
Those who pledge on a tier that includes a head-sketch will have the choice of a sketch from either artist, and a choice of whichever character they would like drawn for them. This bookplate will be signed by both creators, personalized just for you, and applied to the inside front cover of your book!
ADD ON ITEM: NEW 18+ MINIBOOK
Our 18+ extra stories are usually only available digitally, but as part of each Kickstarter we've enjoyed gathering our most recent extras to compile in an 18+ minibook. We've made our most recent four stories available to pick up alongside Volume 4— and have included notes about where each story takes place in the main text. This item is available on several of our tiers as well!

Risks and challenges
This is our fourth Kickstarter; we've successfully completed three projects prior to this one. We're very confident that we'll be able to deliver high quality rewards quickly and efficiently. We've become comfortable and confident working with large shipping orders, and the printers we love to work with for merch and books produce really lovely, high quality products. To make the process even smoother, all of the pages and art going into Volume 4 have been completed and pre-formatted to go to the printer— all we need is the funding to seal the deal.
Here's the math for how the funding for our project breaks down:
The cost of printing 1000 books (168 pages ea.) in full color is $4,200 ($3,330 for 1000 books + $870 to ship them to us). The minimum number of books needed to be sold in order to pay this cost is 280 books, at $15 USD each retail price. The cost for us to ship out 280 books, shipping materials not included, is anywhere between $900 and $2,800. (Note: the variance in this number depends on the eventual breakdown of US vs. International orders.)
We've settled on $2,000 as being a feasible mid-way point to expect to need to pay in shipping costs that will allow us to ship 280 books. The price of materials needed to package them for mailing is estimated at $130. After anticipating $4,200 for the cost of books, and $2,130 total for shipping, we will need approximately $6,330 to successfully print Volume 4. A total goal of $7,500 accounts for the 5% in payment processing fees, as well as 5% in fees that Kickstarter takes in payment from the campaign. It also accounts for any emergencies that may come up during fulfillment - including packages lost in post, address errors, etc.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
