Project Update #4: Tortoise: Open journalism - a new type of newsroom

A 4 personas les gusta

Bring Tortoise to your Town

We mean it when we say that when you’re a member of Tortoise, you have a seat at our table. Metaphorically and literally. We already have members right across the UK and abroad who can’t make it to our London newsroom, so we’re going to bring the newsroom to you.

Tortoise on Tour begins in 2019. Every other week, we’ll host a ThinkIn in towns and cities all around the country.

The question is, where to first? The answer is up to you. Advocates of open journalism from Southampton to St Andrews, Louisville to LA (and anywhere in between) can bring their local communities’ stories to the heart of our newsroom. All you need is 100 people from your hometown to join Tortoise to guarantee you a slot on our first Tortoise on Tour schedule.

What better incentive could there be for you to help us spread the word? And we want to help you do it - we’d love to be introduced to...

  • Your local Student Unions and student newspapers
  • Your local paper or radio station
  • Big local employers - hospitals, factories, big company HQs, the council…

If you, or somebody you know, could advocate open journalism in your community and make sure their stories get told, get in touch with us at hello@tortoismedia.com or on Twitter @Tortoise and we’ll show you how.

Keep track of how your hometown is doing by following our updates on Twitter.

A taste of Tortoise

The ThinkIns - our open news conferences - are already up and running here in London. Here’s what’s coming up:

ThinkIn: The State of Democracy: Is technology a boon or a threat?

For politics and democracy to work, we have to engage, we have to negotiate, we have to compromise. In theory, technology should help with all of that. In practice, is it undermining all the qualities that make our democracies function?

  • When: Monday 29 October, 6.00-7.30pm
  • Where: Fora, 180 Borough High St, London SE1 1LB

ThinkIn: The State of Racism in the UK: Does the problem start in the classroom?

It’s not that we teach racism, it’s just that we don’t teach the things that would help our children overcome it by understanding where it comes from and how it operates. We have to own our history - its failures as well as its successes - and we’ll never do that without educating ourselves properly.

  • When: Wednesday 31 October, 6.00-7.30pm
  • Where: Fora, 180 Borough High St, London SE1 1LB

We’d love you to come along as our guest (the pre-Christmas ThinkIns won’t count towards your membership allocation if you’ve already pledged). Email the team at thinkin@tortoisemedia.com and we’ll add you to the guest list.

Onwards, slowly.
