Torrey House Press is an independent, nonprofit publisher run and staffed by five women dedicated to publishing cutting-edge literature in support of our natural world.
We are the intermountain West's only nonprofit literary book publisher, and the only independent publisher in the country with a mission to promote conservation through literature. We need your help to publish two books by young writers illuminating the personal impacts of an abstract global emergency, making the conversation as urgent and personal as the climate crisis itself: SHAPED BY SNOW by Ayja Bounous and CONFLUENCE by Zak Podmore.
As with other nonprofit presses, book revenue covers only fifty percent of our expenses, so donors make books like Ayja's and Zak's possible. By becoming a Kickstarter backer, you can help shape a critical conversation about identity and place amid an uncertain future and support an independent, cause-driven publisher.
About the Books
In SHAPED BY SNOW: DEFENDING THE FUTURE OF WINTER, skier and debut author Ayja Bounous explores threats to winters and watershed and the far-reaching impacts of a diminishing snowpack on the American West as she realizes how deeply her personal relationships are tied to the snow-covered mountains of Utah's Wasatch range. As a young writer, Ayja shows how the climate crisis affects a generation's outlook on the future. You can help us bring her poignant story to the page by becoming a Kickstarter backer and contributing to the most urgent conversation of our day.
"Those who love winter will love this book. But as we steadily erase the season that sets us free from friction, Shaped by Snow will appeal to anyone who has ever looked up and thrilled at the first flakes fat in the autumn sky." —BILL MCKIBBEN, author of The End of Nature
Ayja Bounous is a Utah native and avid skier. She holds an MA in Environmental Humanities from the University of Utah and bachelor’s degrees in Music and Environmental Studies from Santa Clara University. She lives in Salt Lake City, Utah.
In CONFLUENCE: NAVIGATING THE PERSONAL & POLITICAL ON RIVERS OF THE NEW WEST, paddler and journalist Zak Podmore takes readers down Western rivers and deep into some of the most pressing environmental and social justice issues of our time, including uranium tailings on the Ute Mountain Ute lands near the San Juan River, the treatment of asylum-seekers crossing the Rio Grande, and one of the largest dam removal projects in history on Washington’s Elwha River. Zak's vivid storytelling will leave you loving the wild places he loves, and as a Kickstarter backer you'll help us give voice to a writer our world needs to hear.
"Zak Podmore has unleashed the kind of storytelling that will inspire the next great wave of ecological activism—and not a moment too soon." —AMY IRVINE, author of Desert Cabal
Zak Podmore is a Utah-based freelance writer, film producer, and editor who covers conservation issues and Utah politics. This summer, he will join the Salt Lake Tribune as a Report for America fellow, covering conflict and change in San Juan County. He is editor-at-large for Canoe & Kayak magazine and editor of the Canyon Echo: A Journal of Southeast Utah. His work also appears in Outside, Sierra, High Country News, Four Corners Free Press, High Desert Journal, and the Huffington Post. He lives in Bluff, Utah.
WHAT YOUR GIFT WILL DO:
Funds raised for Shaped by Snow and Confluence will finance editorial support, design, printing, marketing and publicity, national distribution to all retail sales channels, and shipping for these two books. Torrey House Press is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit so all donations are tax deductible. Funds received in excess of our goal will finance author events that bring Zak and Ayja to bookstores, libraries, and community centers for readings and conversation.
The climate crisis affects us all, and with their books, Ayja and Zak have the potential to reach across regions and generations to engage more hearts and minds in critical conversations about our future. Give today to help us bring these important stories to the page and support small-press, independent publishing.
