I’ve created a huge map of Post-Apocalyptic Seattle, and now I want to share it with the world.
The Seattle Doomsday Map is a huge painting of downtown Seattle devastated. Buildings have collapsed. Cars lie abandoned on I-5. Neighborhoods have been consumed by fire, water, and returning nature. Civilization has dwindled to a few scattered enclaves, but in those refuges, life carries on with full vigor. This vision haunts me constantly, but it also gets my imagination going, which is why I was compelled to create this image.
And what better way to share it than as a beautiful full-color roadmap you can carry in your backpack, stash in the glove box of your car, or hang on the wall in your compound.
It Comes with a Survival Guide
There’s no other map quite like this in the world. I’ve rendered every building in downtown Seattle and Capitol Hill in meticulous detail. Habitable areas, structures, and hazards to navigation are clearly marked. I’m also printing a guidebook, “Dee Dee’s Doomsday Guide to Surviving in Post-Apocalyptic Seattle” that provides valuable information for the visitor, such as the location of the radiation leak in Sodo, who sells fresh produce in Belltown, and what’s the worst threat to your safety in Cal Anderson Park, not to mention the locations of zombie infestations, landmines, biological hazards, underground distilleries, and roving motorcycle gangs. You can see more previews of the map and the guidebook on my blog, Year of the Dungeon.
Why I'm Kickstarting This
The purpose of this Kickstarter is to raise funds to print copies of the map so I can get it out to the people who will appreciate it most. Kickstarting will also enable me to make fine art prints and create new original art to include as backer rewards. I will also be printing additional copies to offer for sale. Any profits I make from this project will enable me to devote even more time to creating more artwork in this vein in the future.
UPDATE: Several people have asked if they can get an extra poster map with their backing rewards. The answer is YES! Please add $10 to your backing for each additional poster you would like, up to a maximum of 5.
Limited Edition Postcard: Every supporter will get signed and numbered limited-edition postcard thanking you for your support. This postcard depicts the cruise ship wreck on Pioneer square and includes a personal thank you from me. Yes, it's only a post card, but it will be printed on acid-free paper, numbered, and signed by me, so each one is a collectable piece of artwork in its own right. This is the perfect way to acquire collectable art for practically nothing.
The Seattle Doomsday Poster Map: This map is a 24"x36" full-color actual size reproduction of the map suitable for framing or hanging.
The Seattle Doomsday Street Map: The street map is nearly identical to the poster, but will be delivered folded, street map style, to a size of 4" x 9" for portability in the concrete canyons and wasted streets of Post Seattle.
Dee Dee's Guide to Post-Apocalyptic Seattle: In which an experienced survivor and wasteland scavenger shares the secrets to surviving in Post Seattle, including lore, rumors, and reliable information about each and every neighborhood of Seattle. An essential adjunct to every foray into the ruins, it includes information on every neighborhood depicted in the map with handy icons to identify major hazards and opportunities. The guide is a 4" x 8.5" booklet with a cardstock cover.
Archival Print: A high quality collectable print, 10"x10", depicting your favorite neighborhood or landmark on the Seattle Doomsday Map. If you're not familiar with Seattle, or can't decide, a range of options will be offered. This item is printed on acid-free paper using archival inks and will last for generations if cared for.
Custom Artwork: This is where it starts getting REALLY cool. An original one-of-a-kind piece of art, 7" square, executed in the style and scale of the Seattle Doomsday Map, depicting the post-apocalyptic neighborhood surrounding your own home, or any location in the world you choose!
Map Prints: These high quality digital prints are not only archival, but they are created using professional processes by a vendor that specializes in this kind of work. These are practically indistinguishable from the original without the use of a magnifying glass--a real artistic treasure. The art prints come in two szies, the full 24"x36" map, or a half-size 12"x18" print.
The Original Artwork:The Doomsday Seattle Map took me a year to execute, and I would be overjoyed to see it travel to a good home somewhere. As far as I know, there's no other piece of art quite like this anywhere in the world. You can be the owner of it and win my everlasting gratitude by pledging at this level.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
This is a low-risk project. The map has already been created and the guidebook has been written. The printers I’m working with are well-established businesses with a solid reputation and previous experience doing this kind of work. There’s always the possibility of delays in printing caused by accidents, unexpected complications, and so on, but I’ve done everything I can to minimize them. I’m allowing myself two months to get everything printed, assembled, and shipped, but I expect it to take much less time than that.
Some reward levels include custom artwork, which can be time consuming to create. In that case I’ll work with you personally to make sure you get something that you like delivered in a timely fashion, however, depending how many people request these rewards, it may be a few months before every piece of artwork is delivered.
If you buy one of the larger prints or the original, I’ll ship them UPS with sturdy packaging and insurance. Postcards may be damaged in transit.
Yes! Several people have asked if they can get an extra poster map with their backing rewards. Please add $10 to your backing for each additional poster you would like, up to a maximum of 5.
The Survivor ($100) says shipping "only available in the US", but it also says additional shipping will be added outside the US. Which is it?
The Survivor ($100) backer level IS available outside the US. Initially I was worried about shipping original art internationally, but I got over it. However, I forgot to remove the disclaimer text! Now that it's live, and someone has backed it, I'm not allowed to change the text. You can still back at that level if you are a non-US resident, and you will definitely receive your artwork.
My plan is to make the maps available at 300 DPI in PDF format, but for those who want ALL the pixels, I will offer a 1200 DPI version. Warning, that file will be big!
Can I use this map as a battle map in my RPG, or for a Car Wars game, or Apocalypse World or something?
Yes, absolutely! Will you invite me over to play when you do? Note, however, that even at 1200 DPI, the map starts to get pretty grainy when you get down to the scale of a vehicle or person. You could still use it, you just have to understand that the detail will be limited.
The international shipping on The Cache is $10. One of the rewards mistakenly reads $5. This is typo. Since I cannot edit reward levels once the project is live, or change the shipping cost, I created a new listing with the corrected text. Once the project funds, I'll work with any international shippers who may have backed the reward with the 5$ statement in the text.
Since a few people have asked to for the poster map instead of the roadmap, I'm going to give everyone their choice of option with the Hardholder. I'll ask you which one you want when the Kickstarter period is done.
Dang, that's a huge file! But, yes, I'll put up a 1200 DPI version for backers to download.
