Welcome to the Kickstarter page of our third VN, Cerulean Days!
A third endeavor is on the horizon. A third visual novel we'll see through from start to finish. And it's just as exciting now as when we started out in 2016!
Cerulean Days has been in development since January of 2019. At the moment, the script consists of 60k words, with the goal being around 200k. Unlike our previous visual novels, Cerulean Days has since the earliest stages of development been designed to include romance-packed routes featuring three gorgeous heroines. Speaking of gorgeous heroines, we're delighted to announce that our very own Wacom stylus-wielding Sunako is back, ready to bless us with another visual novel! If the stretch goal is reached, an adult version of the game will be produced.
Below is a link to a demo we've put together. It covers the first 20k words of the common route, and should give everyone an idea of what the final product might look like. We're proud of the production values it showcases, and hope you'll end up liking it! And if you do, please do us a huge favor and share it with friends and acquaintances you think might be interested!
Tags/genres include, but are not limited to: Romance, Comedy, Slice of Life, Psychological Problems, Mystery, Atmosphere, Philosophy, Suspense
- Assuming a reading speed of a ten thousand words an hour, Cerulean Days will aim to deliver at least 20 hours of content.
- We reserve the rights to veto any suggestions made by backers in regards to game content. We will, however, do our best to make sure everyone is happy!
- If there's anything you believe we should offer in our rewards that we currently don't, please don't hesitate to contact us! We want to make this work, and are willing to be flexible if it means Cerulean Days gets funded.
- For the physical copies, we have looked into multiple options, but have not yet reached a decision in which direction to go. We are somewhat leaning towards a slim DVD-case with horizontal print. Let us know what you think!
A seemingly idyllic, modern island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. A constant tranquil breeze along a mild climate, and a well-off society embracing a harmonious way of life. Its citizens often refer to the island as their very own miracle, counting themselves lucky to have been born on it. Tourism is low despite Inre being a highly desired travel destination, and for good reason. Not only is it a trip only the rich can afford, a rigorous regime means a special visa is required for entry.
Over a course of six months, a lethal biological attack claims a significant amount of lives. While tragedy occupies people's minds to the brim, a controlling governmental plan is constructed and put into motion. All to prevent such attacks from ever occurring again. The following years, Inre Island's citizens face unexpected change from their usual ways. On a sombre day – damp, dark, and horrifying – the internet is shut down, leaving the island disconnected from the world around it.
2020 - present.
After a long internet-less spring tinged with uncertainty, a new system to replace it with is introduced. A new "internet" along digital setbacks result in major changes to everyday life. Unable to adapt, many find themselves spiritually stuck in a world that no longer exists.
Suddenly, the island appears shrouded in mysteries. The closed hearts are many. A select few want a way out. But most want to reset and forget.
People who never would've met, meet.
People who never would've loved, love.
An island that had never known sadness, knows it now.
Cerulean Days is set in 2020, and follows two outliers of society – mellow Michael and competent Séverine – as they discover the true effects of 2018. Amidst tragedy of lost friends and family bonds are grown, solace is found, feelings blossom, truth is discovered, and conspiracies are seemingly unraveled.
Hearts in need of mending await you. Welcome to Inre Island.
Séverine - A creative and intelligent girl working as a professional pastry chef in a luxurious mall. Due to strict schooling and an arduous upbringing, she has a habit of setting a high bar for both herself and those around her. She has a bold side to her, but typically only lets it show around people she's comfortable with. Her past is filled with loneliness, but found comfort in chatting with like-minded people online. Due to the changes to Inre Island, and their effects on the social landscape, she is put in a position she's unfamiliar with. And she does not like it.
Grace - A kind-hearted and bubbly woman working at Inre City High School. For three years, she was Michael's homeroom teacher. After a tragic personal crisis of Michael's, Grace offers him all the support a grieving one could wish for. Since that day, they've lived in harmony under the same roof. Since that day, they've found solace in each other's company. Since that day, they've been an uncommon "family".
Rose - A cheerful full-time streamer meets an internet-less society. Confusion about life ensues. Her online community – her everything – is forever gone. Rose is lost, and knows not how to get out of the pit she has been put in. And her stubbornness makes everything all the more difficult! Will she adapt? Or will she remain stuck, holding onto fragments of her past?
Isak Hedlund is and has been a long-standing, trusted composer for our games – I'm elated to announce that Cerulean Days won't be an exception to this rule. This time, he's bringing in an entire team of composers from The Academy of Music and Drama at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. Their work on Cerulean Days' OST has so far been absolutely stellar, and it is with great anticipation we look forward to their future work as well. Below is a few snippets of music they've composed for us:
Hello, and nice to meet you! I'm Leaf, the writer and project lead for Cerulean Days.
What I'm about to type out is almost surreal to me, but as of this year, I have over three years of visual novel development experience. My goal is to – at some point, now or in x years – to become one of the leading visual novel developers in the west. The passion I have for the medium and my own creations is rivaled by no other hobbies of mine. And I hope that'll show in everything I create both now and in the future!
For Cerulean Days, I'm going with an easy to digest, funny, character-focused novel with attractive and lovable heroines that'll cause heart palpitations to anyone fond of 2D girls. All when you least expect it of course, in the most mysteriously intimate way possible. Anyway, I hope you'll like them as much as I do, because I had a great deal of fun designing them. The island setting was an afterthought, but I love the atmosphere of subtropical islands, and I suppose it's also a way of living out my fantasies of living elsewhere than the normally cold and dark Sweden! This summer's heatwave suggests otherwise though – maybe moving even further north wouldn't be such a bad idea...
I have and I will put a lot of love into the game. I hope we make it, so you can see everything come to life yourself! If you support Cerulean Days, you support people whose dreams consist of creating wonderful experiences and art for everyone to appreciate.
Thank you for reading, and until next time!
Hi, Sunako here!
I'm in charge of the character art and the visual direction of the game. I've worked with Leaf before on his first visual novel, Anomie. My drawing skills have improved a lot since then, so I wanted to put together a visual novel that we can be really proud to call our best work yet!
We have been working really hard on the demo, and I hope you'll enjoy the experience of reading it as much as I did. It's so nice to see it all come together. I would love to see this project to the finish line and draw many more CGs of our adorable characters.
Thank you for your support!
This is the base goal for Cerulean Days! If we reach this tier, we'll have enough funds to create the full-length game the way was intended by Leaf.
Let's throw Sunako a few bones! With these extra funds, we can get Sunako to draw at least one more new pose per heroine. Or maybe even additional outfits, like swimsuits for the obligatory beach chapter!
A full-length 90s or more quality opening and movie, directed by Leaf. We'll also look into the possibility of getting original music done for both the opening and the ending, and accompanying artwork!
Adults do adult things. This tier will let us release an 18+ version of Cerulean Days that doesn't exclude these moments from the story! We'll also look into additional 18+ content that might be suitable for the story.
Above is an estimation of how we plan to divide the funds we receive from this Kickstarter. Please note that the game is still in development, which makes things such as art assets, like CGs and BGs for example, difficult to be specific about. We will do our best to stick to the initial budget shown above, however. If you have any further questions about how the funds will be distributed, let us know!
Risks and challenges
A concern that is always present in any project is not making the deadlines that have been set. Things can, and often do get in the way of meeting them. What I will say is that unless something awful happens to me or to any of the team members, I have full faith Cerulean Days will be brought to completion at some point. If the Kickstarter is successful, then it's to me just a question of when and how.
We have a good track record of successfully releasing complete versions of our games, and we have every intention of keeping it that way!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
