Work Smarter and Play Harder with Voltset
Voltset is a module that plugs into a smartphone via a USB connection. It will then turn a smartphone into a smart multimeter. The multimeter is a must have tool for every DIY, tinkerer or hardware hacker. This project was started two years ago by two makers, Michael and Tom. They could not find a multimeter that was convenient to carry, yet powerful and versatile enough to be useful in their wide range of projects. So they set out to build their own. Almost two years later, they are ready to introduce Voltset to the world of makers.
Voltset is especially helpful when...
- Portable technology and troubleshooting on the go: Instead of bringing a traditional multimeter, aka ‘the brick’, pull out your Voltset and give a battery or resistor a quick test. Voltset may even suggest a thing or two based on your measurements.
- Auto-calculation, logging and Excel: No more writing down and punching in numbers. Measure voltage (V), resistance (Ω) and the built-in (Ohm’s Law V= I*Ω) equation will return the estimated current (A) reading. If this is not enough, use the built-in Excel to save your data. With Voltset you can easily keep logs and make charts.
Best Loyal Companion For Arduino And Raspberry Pi: Download the app plug-in and probe your Raspberry Pi / Arduino test points to diagnose your project. Voltset is your best tinkering companion like R2D2 for Luke Skywalker, and JARVIS for Ironman.

Voltset seamlessly integrates with your smartphone. It is getting smarter with each app update. Upload or share data to your cloud or with a community. Download add-ons or share your latest software with members of the open platform.
Software Development Kit
Voltset is designed for CAT II which means it's safe to be used around the house (we are improving it to be CAT III capable). So you can use Voltset on most household appliances and with your favorite gadgets and toys.
Metal Oxyde Varistors (VOM) are used for circuit protection offering up to 600VDC and 400Vrms against overvoltage transients such as lightning, power contact, and power induction. Resettable PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) fuses are also used to provide over current protection, and will reset automatically when the fault is removed and temperature returns to a safe level. This is considered a more convenient method than conventional fuses that need to be replaced manually.
The Voltset requires no batteries to function. As long as your smartphone works, so does your Voltset.
Note: The Bluetooth extension module for Voltset is a risk free pledge, given that it will only be charged if more than 700 units are backed. We will be sending out a SURVEY after our Kickstarter campaign closes where you can respond with what Voltset accessory you included in your pledge amount. While we have a working prototype able to transmit values from the Voltset to an iPhone, further R&D is required to develop and design a module that is fully functional, tested and working with most devices.

So where are we in the process?
We're fine-tuning Voltset V5 prototype - we are still working on fixing some bugs. With this version, Voltset is getting ready for a larger production run.
Designing Voltset V6 - this is the version you will be receiving!
Setting up for mass manufacturing. The higher the number of units we make, the better the fab we can use, and it will also allow us to bargain for better parts to improve performance and make upgrades.

Risks and challenges
* Not being able to refine PCB design on time.
We will make sure to introduce additional iterations to the process of redesigning the PCB, including meetings and reports every step of the way.
Even though we will test our device extensively, out of thousands of different mobile devices there are some that might cause compatibility issues. Most likely we will not be able to do anything about it.
We might run into problems or delays with assembly, so we will make sure to run with at least 2 suppliers and assembly partners to reduce risk of late delivery. Additionally since we’re very serious about the product we are designing, we might not be satisfied with the results that we are getting and therefore it might take us more time to address.
* Large scale production
Measurements for device enclosures will be strictly monitored with every iteration of PCB. Enclosures will be designed simultaneously and accepted at the same time as the board itself.
We will make sure to communicate clearly with our backers, if there are any indications of delay, and make sure to keep backers posted on progress along the way. Same thing goes with announcing compatibility issues with given devices.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
