About

FROM HOMELESS TO DR.

“Watson’s life reads like a Hollywood screenplay.”

"Watson had guts... He had within himself the characteristics necessary to succeed.”

“Watson is proof... You can persevere.”

“He [Watson] is a reminder of what you can do to achieve seemingly impossible dreams.”

There are nearly 1.3 million homeless students our nation’s public schools- a problem that continues to grow at staggering rates. Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Schools has nearly 5000 homeless students. According to the Institute for Children, Poverty & Homelessness, these students have a 87% chance of dropping out.

This is a movie that will inspire and shine the light on childhood homelessness by looking through the life of Tommy Watson whose parents were arrested 121 times by the time he was a senior in high school in the midst of being recruited as one of the top football players in America. “The purpose of writing and producing the movie was to inspire others to be their best selves regardless of the challenges they face in life,” explains Dr. Tommy Watson. “I want people to know that our stories, good or bad, make us who we are and what we decide to become.” It is this reason Dr. Watson is now sharing his own empowering story in his movie, Resilient, scheduled to start filming and release in Charlotte, NC in the spring of 2019. The movie is based upon his real-life, award-winning book A Face of Courage: The Tommy Watson Story.

Based on the true story from the award-winning book, "A Face of Courage," "RESILIENT" is a visceral inspirational drama in the vein of ‘Blindside’ and ‘Pursuit of Happiness.’ It is the heart-wrenching retelling of a homeless child, whose parents were arrested 121 times, raised in the unforgiving streets of the Five Points neighborhood in Denver, Colorado in the 1980s and 90s who faced insurmountable odds at every turn in his life. But through true grit and unrelenting determination, he avoided gangs, combated drug-addicted parents, and defied the horrid foster care system in hopes of achieving his childhood dream of playing in the NFL for the Denver Broncos. Though that dream never came to fruition, Dr. Tommy went on to become an internationally acclaimed motivational speaker helping other young, lost and hopeless men and women change the trajectory of their lives.

Tonally, ‘Resilient’ is a robust mash-up of the best parts of urban crime drama, inspirational sports films and the emotional roller-coaster that makes underdogs-facing-insurmountable-odds movies so beloved. The audience is hungry for inspirational underdog stories, resilient heroes, and courageous over-comers who pulled up their bootstraps and made themselves into somebody no matter what precarious life situations they were born into.

The world of ‘Resilient’ launches off at the height of the crack epidemic of the 80s and 90s. It shines a glaring light on the universal themes of God, faith, destruction of the family unit, community, and self-reliance. The social and governmental commentary is biting. The drama: intense, brutally honest, a heart-wrenching whirlwind of palpable emotions. The takeaway: Dr. Watson inspires all of us to dig within the deep recesses of our souls to hold on to that glimmer of hope. To follow your dreams unflinchingly. To be a radical success. To be significant. It is a story that needs to be told.

I am also very excited to announce that through this project will be partnering with A Child's Place here in Charlotte, NC.  Their mission is to  erase the impact of homelessness on children and their education. Which is something near and dear to my heart.

A Child’s Place was founded in 1989 when a group of women were walking through Settlers Cemetery in Uptown Charlotte and noticed children playing there during school hours. When asked why they were not in school, the children explained that they were not allowed to enroll in school without a permanent address. The women began a school for 27 homeless children in a room provided by First Presbyterian Church with a teacher from CMS and called it A Child’s Place. Soon after these beginnings, Congress passed the McKinney-Vento Act protecting the educational rights of homeless children.  With McKinney-Vento, the mission of A Child’s Place shifted to supporting homeless children enrolled in public school. Since 1989, the agency has substantially expanded its service capacity.  During the 2017-2018 school year, A Child’s Place helped 2,002 children experiencing homelessness.

Risks and challenges

There is are a lot of moving parts that go into creating and finishing a project like this. If we are able to meet our Kickstarter goal we will be able to move full steam ahead with hiring and compensating key team members such as a director, cinematographer, actors, musicians and obtaining permits and so forth to make this wonderful film happen.

Because we believe so strongly in the film we are looking at a release date of May 2019 and believe that this is a very doable goal. But we also are aware that unforeseeable challenges may arise and we are prepared to handle them as they come.
