Buy the Rights is a Movie Pitching Party Game that takes 30 seconds to learn. It's a storytelling game great for making your friends laugh and getting your creative juices flowing.
Players create their own movies based on four decks of cards:
- Hero Descriptor
Each round, one player is the Producer, and the other players are the Screenwriters. Screenwriters create their own movies by playing one card from each deck out of their hand. For example:
After the Screenwriters have created their movies, they pitch them to the Producer, getting as involved as they want with their pitches. Titles, characters, theme songs, trailer narration; anything goes. The Producer has a budget of $20 Million to spend on their favorite movies, and can divide it up any way they want using the included $5, $10, and $20 Million denominations. The player with the most money at the end of the game wins!
With 400 cards, 100 million possible combinations, and multiple expansion packs in the works, Buy the Rights is infinitely replayable and is a great party game to add to your collection.

Buy the Rights also has an optional dice mode that changes up the rounds, including Hero & Genre Showdowns, Blockbuster rounds, and Producer Kickback rounds. You can play this with a standard six-sided die, but we have a cool stretch goal planned for a custom, engraved die too, so stay tuned!
Buy the Rights is completely finished and ready to send to our manufacturer, AdMagic, the same company that prints Cards Against Humanity, Exploding Kittens, and more.
AdMagic has been working with us for months getting our game ready to print, and they are very responsive and will help make the whole process of manufacturing smooth and painless.
We went with iconography and a minimalistic art style to emphasize the text of the cards, and our art was provided by the excellent Jason Smith.
- It's Social - Buy The Rights is a very social game. It can be competitive and collaborative. Often, players build on each others' ideas and it makes the game more fun.
- It Encourages Creativity - You can make completely silly movies but you can also use Buy The Rights to create unique, interesting ideas. With 100 Million combinations it will always get you creating new stories.
- It's Hilarious - Many cards are funny on their own, but combining them in unique ways leads to very funny movie pitches. We've even used the game in a live comedy show with local comedians!
- Easy to Learn - It literally takes 30 seconds to explain the rules so you can spend more time making each other laugh, and less time learning to play.
- Infinitely Replayable - With 400 cards and multiple expansion packs in the works, in addition to the fact that everyone pitches differently, the game never gets old.
- Future Plans - Our team has years worth of Buy The Rights content planned, including expansion packs, a junior edition of the game, and more. We want to build a community around this game and can't wait to share all the ideas we have.
- We Can't Do It Without You - Manufacturing games is expensive and requires large orders. Luckily, the more copies we can order, the more the costs go down. We plan on having some copies left over if we are funded so we can sell them at events and self-finance a second printing of the game.
- Great for Many Age Groups - While there's plenty of room for innuendo there are no outright offensive cards, so you don't have to worry about putting the kids to bed before you play. But, you can pitch your movies however you want and it can get interesting pretty quickly.
- It's Adaptable - Different groups of players have different play styles, and Buy The Rights is easy to adapt to your group. With the optional dice mode and your own house rules, you can play it the way you want.
Feature Presentation - One copy of the game.
The Producer and Executive Producer levels come with Custom Cards that will be unique to your copy of the game. These cards will be subject to our approval and must be submitted through our survey system. These levels also come with blank Hero cards so you can customize your copy of Buy the Rights even further. These levels also come with the buttons, sticker, and postcard.
The Buy the Rights t-shirt will be printed by the excellent folks at Real Thread and will be super soft with a water-based ink print.
The Movie Studio level ($200) includes 10 copies of Buy the Rights, plus all extras from the above tiers.
The Game Store level ($400) is for US-based game stores that would like to order 20 copies of the game to sell.
The Screenwriter level ($500) lets you write one card that will be included in every copy of Buy the Rights. Our team will work with you on creating your own Hero Descriptor, Hero, or Plot card that will be a part of Buy the Rights forever! Also includes 5 copies of the game and all the bonus rewards from the above levels. Limited to 5!
Buy the Rights is great fun and infinitely replayable right out of the box, but it gets even better when you mix in expansion packs! There are three large expansions in the works for later in 2016, but we have an awesome mini-expansion pack that everyone in the $25 and over levels will get if we reach $20,000.
The 80s Action Expansion Pack - 30 cards in a foil pack reminiscent of old movie trading cards, packed full of cards that will make your pitches sound like awesome 80s movies. 10 new Hero Descriptor, Hero, and Plot cards (plus a bonus 80s Action Genre card) increase the number of possible combinations in Buy the Rights to over 133 Million!
The 80s Action Expansion can create 1000 pitches on its own, but combining it with the core game is where things will really get fun. Help us cross our goal and hit $20,000 and everyone gets a pack!
Custom Engraved Die - Buy the Rights has an optional dice mode that lets you switch up the rounds a little bit, and we've been using these prototype dice during our playtests. If we hit $25,000, everyone in the $25 and over levels will receive an awesome engraved die, and the 80s Action Expansion!
We've played Buy the Rights with huge crowds, small groups of friends, complete strangers, and everyone in between, and so far the response we've had has been amazing. People understand the game quickly and can jump in and start making everyone laugh. We're also going to be attending a lot of events over the next month to spread the word about the game even more, so check out our website to see if we'll be at an event near you.
We played the game for the first time in April (on index cards) and by May we had full prototypes. Around that time we were chosen as finalists in the Boston Festival of Indie Games, and found out in August we were officially selected.
Buy the Rights is the passion project of a group of four best friends from Indianapolis, Indiana.
Tommy Day, Favorite Movie: Jurassic Park - Tommy is a self-employed web developer and huge movie nerd. He created Buy the Rights about a year ago and fleshed it out with the help of his wife Riley and their best friends.
Riley Day, Favorite Movie: Dan in Real Life - Riley is a Nurse Practitioner and Tommy's high school sweetheart, and also a big movie fan. She loves the social aspect of Buy the Rights and that it brings people together.
Chad Yadon, Favorite Movie: Network - Chad is an avid player of games of all types, as well as a student of film and game design. He also is a huge fan of comedy and occasionally aspires to the stage himself. He couldn't imagine a game more up his alley than Buy the Rights.
Michelle Yadon, Favorite Movie: Beauty and The Beast - Michelle Yadon is a drama therapist who works with people with disabilities. She believes in the power of play and leisure and has seen it transform people's lives. She is excited to play Buys the Rights someday with her clients.

We've had a lot of time to plan our campaign and if we reach our goal we will be able to put in the minimum order from AdMagic, pay for shipping the games all over the world, and cover all fees and rewards. The more we can raise, the more we can upgrade the game and bring costs down so we can unlock stretch goals. We plan on building Buy the Rights into a business we can run for years and our goal is to have copies left over that we can sell at events and online in order to fund new products. Risks and challenges
Buy The Rights is 100% done and ready to be sent off to our printer, AdMagic. AdMagic prints Cards Against Humanity, Exploding Kittens, Monikers, and more, and we've been working with them for months to make sure everything is ready to go as soon as our campaign is over.
Since we won't be waiting for any art or content when the campaign is over, we'll be able to immediately submit the final files to AdMagic. A few weeks later we will get a physical proof, and when the proof is approved, production can start.
