Buy The Rights • The Movie Making Party Game (Canceled)
A storytelling, movie-making party game where you create your own movie and pitch it to the Producer.
Buy The Rights is a movie making party game where players create their own movies based on these four decks of cards:
- Hero Descriptor
Each round, one player is the Producer, and the other players are the screenwriters. Everyone has three cards from each deck in their hand, and picks one from each deck to create their own movie. For example:
After everyone has created their movies, it's time to pitch your ideas to the Producer. You can get as creative as you want with the pitching process, or you can just read your movie aloud to everyone. Some people like to describe extra details about their movie, such as the characters, title, etc. The point is to be creative and make everyone laugh.
The producer has a budget of $20 Million dollars to spend on his or her favorite movie(s). That budget can be split up any way they see fit, so one person could make the entire $20 Million if they have the best movie, or multiple people can make money.
Winning the Game
Before playing the game, players decide how long they want to play. A good rule of thumb is to play the game at least long enough for everyone to be the Producer two or three times. The player at the end of the game with the most money wins!
We have played Buy The Rights with a wide variety of people and it has been a hit with all ages. With 400 cards in the game, everyone's personality and sense of humor came come through in their movie ideas and games are always full of laughs.
Buy The Rights is best played with four or more people, and games can take 30 minutes or more. One really cool thing about Buy The Rights that was kind of an accident is that it's family friendly. We've played with kids as young as seven, but we think twelve and up is a good guideline. I'm proud that the game is still very funny without the need for adults only cards, and I'd like to keep it that way.
Besides, you can pitch your movie any way you want! The fun of Buy The Rights is how adaptable it is to everyone's sense of humor and play style.
Buy The Rights was one of 55 games selected out of hundreds of entries this year to make it as a finalist in the Boston Festival of Indie Games' Tabletop Showcase. You can read more about that and see the entry video here.
Buy The Rights comes in an awesome 11x7 box with a molded plastic insert that holds the four decks and the play money.
- 400 Cards - 100 Genre, Hero Descriptor, Hero, and Plot cards
- Play Money - $5 Million, $10 Million, and $20 Million bills.
The art for Buy The Rights was created by the talented illustrator Jason Smith. The game has a simple and bold design featuring custom movie-themed icons. Each deck has it's own color scheme and the front of the cards are labeled so it's always easy to keep your cards organized.

The different cards that are used to create the movies provide plenty of laughs and lots of replay value, and the fact that they are safe for younger gamers makes this a title that can be enjoyed both by families and by partygoers. - Board Game Quest - Read Full Review
With game manufacturing, cost of each game goes down the more you can order, so if we can get past our goal of $20,000, we can add some cool stuff to the game for everyone!
$30,000 - Upgraded Cards
The standard cards in Buy The Rights are already very high quality, but if we reach this goal we'll bump up the quality of the cards to be a little more durable and fancy!
$40,000 - The First Expansion Pack!
This is a big one! If we reach $40,000, every physical copy of the game will also come with the First Expansion Pack! It'll be 120 new cards in a tuckbox, and we'll be revealing the theme of the expansion later in the campaign!
The first expansion pack for Buy The Rights adds a whole new dynamic to the game: Directors and Actors! A romantic comedy directed by Michael Bay and starring Betty White? Box office gold! We'll be unveiling more details on the expansion soon, so stay tuned.
$50,000 - 50 Blank Cards
The core game already has 100 million possible combinations, but if we hit $50,000 we'll add in 50 blank cards to make each playing of the game even more unique. You'll get blank Hero Descriptor, Hero, and Plot cards to help create whatever kind of movie you want!
Stay tuned, we also have a fun achievement system planned and will be unveiling that soon!
Manufacturing a game is expensive and only really makes sense if you can order 1000+ copies at a time. Luckily the people at AdMagic have been amazing and have worked with me to get Buy The Rights ready for manufacturing. A lot of thought went into the goal of this campaign to account for things like shipping, warehouse fees, Kickstarter fees, and miscellaneous expenses.
Buy The Rights is the first game from a new company called Literally Wizards. Literally Wizards is also a blog and (upcoming) podcast about tabletop games, and was started by me, Tommy Day.
Here is the entry video I submitted to the Boston Festival of Indie Games, that got Buy The Rights selected as a finalist.
I'm a freelance web developer, movie buff, blogger, wannabe filmmaker, and breakfast enthusiast. I was always making movies as a kid and wanted to create a game that lets everyone feel like they're creating their own movies.
Buy The Rights' amazing artwork was created by the talented Jason Smith.
Lots of people helped make Buy The Rights possible. I couldn't have done this without the help of my wife, my friends, my family, the wonderful people at AdMagic and Print & Play Productions, and more.
Risks and challenges
Buy The Rights is 100% done and ready to be sent off to our printer, AdMagic. AdMagic prints Cards Against Humanity, Exploding Kittens, Monikers, and more, and I've been working with them for months to make sure everything is ready to go as soon as our campaign is over.
Since I won't be waiting for any art or content when the campaign is over, I'll be able to immediately submit the final files to AdMagic. A few weeks later I'll get a physical proof, and when the proof is approved, production can start.
Buy The Rights will be shipped by professional fulfillment companies, so hopefully there will be a minimal amount of risk involved with getting games to backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
