The Man With His Fingers in His Ears is a 2019 short film, already completed, about what happens when we've had enough. Aspiring documentary maker Stella, and her cameraman Tom, arrive in a small town to cover the story of a man who has put his fingers in his ears and won't take them out. Inter-cut with talking heads of the people they find to interview, it is a philosophical, ethereal and comic look into the reasons behind anyone wanting to "shut it all out".
We made this film just for the fun of it, the brain child of actor and co-director Tom Michael Blyth. When pre-production started the world didn't seem quite so crazy but when shooting wrapped and the edit began it started to become clear that the film was more and more topical. Don't we all want to shut it out?
The film is finished to a high quality, with original scored music and professional editing. As such, and being really proud of the film, we've decided we'd love to get it out onto the International Film Festival Circuit, something that was never factored into the original micro-budget. We've been accepted onto the competitive slate of Festival Formula, a company who use their specialist knowledge of the circuit to select the best and most appropriate festivals for your film, and then take care of all submissions and correspondence (www.festivalformula.com). To engage their services, and give our film the highest possible chance of success, we need to raise money.
£2,600 will cover Festival Formula's "Submissions" package. They will take care of every step of the film's submissions and acceptances.
£1,265 will cover Festival Formula's "Strategy" package. They will design a strategy for the film's festival submissions and then hand all information over to us to carry out.
We'd love to go for the "Submissions" package, and confidently put the film into the hands of the Festival Formula team, as our production crew move on to their next exciting projects. Our total project goal includes this fee plus all costs to cover the rewards we're offering and the fees used by Kickstarter.
With your help we can send this film to around 45 festivals, and get everyone with their fingers in their ears!
We're offering a range of great rewards for anyone who can contribute, so please check them out! Details are on the right.
Risks and challenges
Of course, our main risk is that the film doesn't get selected by the festivals we submit to. However, we have confidence that the film will gain some traction. It's a mix of drama, comedy and mocumentary, which means it has appeal across a range of categories. It's also surrealist in tone, with elements of improv. Festival Formula watch your film first, before deciding if it is worth their attention, they are selective and do not take on every project. The Man With His Fingers in His Ears was selected without any re-edits (however we did decide to re-cut the opening to shorten it).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
