In 2015, you helped me fund two music videos: “Son of a Preacher Man” and “Breath & Sound.” By all accounts, they were great successes, screening at film festivals worldwide and garnering more than 1.3 million views. I couldn't have done them without your generous support—and I can't thank you enough.
But I'm not done! There are many more stories I want to tell. Stories that reflect the beauty and complexity of the LGBT experience. Stories that have, for the most part, been ignored by mainstream artists.
Telling these stories matters. They help show LGBT youth that there is a world out there for them, a world full of beauty and love. Our videos also impact LGBT allies, moving them to take action in ways they might not have done before. They change the hearts and minds of those that previously believed that the LGBT experience was a choice and something to look down upon.
Here are some comments about how “Son of a Preacher Man” and “Breath & Sound” affected people:
"This video had me in tears... I know what it was like because I lived it. The church was told that the pastor's grandson and I were dating when we were in middle school..."
"I grew up in a church like this, heard those same verses, and suffered through almost identically the same sermon. At age 15, I was planning my suicide…”
“I went through the 'exodus' program and 'pray away the gay'... it was traumatic. This video made me cry and smile. Thank you... this was so beautiful."
“I had someone I loved and he killed himself because his family treated him so badly… He was my first love and I think about him every day. Thank you for this video, it helps a lot.”
"Love is love. Thank you for this beautiful song!"
But enough about what we've done. Here’s what we're going to do next!
I am currently in pre-production on two videos:
More Than Temporary: A collaboration with San Francisco-based artist Chris Turner, “More Than Temporary” tells the story of those that tend to be the most overlooked in our own community: LGBT seniors. Through the eyes of a young man, falling in love for the first time, we see the beauty and strength of those that have come before us. Those that have endured discrimination and fought for the rights we take for granted today. “More than Temporary” aims to show people around the world that the LGBT community is home to many vibrant and long-lasting relationships and prove that our love stories are just as inspirational, if not more so, as any others. We are slated to shoot the video in San Francisco at the end of October 2016.
The Thing About Love: This is my most ambitious video yet! It will be a unique “choose your own adventure” style video, where viewers customize the video by selecting the characters, settings, and scenes as they search for love. “The Thing About Love” will highlight the sameness in everyone's search for love—regardless of age, race, gender, or orientation. We're slated to shoot May 2017.
Risks and challenges
There are always challenges to making music videos: finding the right talent, production, distribution and promotion. But the greatest challenge I've faced has been financial restrictions. Your support in the first Kickstarter campaign gave us the resources we needed to make the high-quality videos that we envisioned—and which we deserve. With this new campaign, we can continue to tell stories that reflect the LGBTQ community in a dynamic and beautiful way.
Because of my history, and the great team of professionals I am lucky to call friends, I am uniquely qualified to produce these videos beautifully and professionally while adhering to a strict production schedule.
