About this project
We're Not Done Yet!
Reaching the $10,000 goal will enable us to shoot additional interviews and performances that are vital to articulating Sam's amazing journey. We'll also be able to submit TENTH to 5 additional film festivals!
TENTH is a labor of love for Sam and myself-only made possible with a micro budget and many, many helping hands. Be a part of our story - let's get to 10k and share it the world!
most cat's have nine...
At 74 years old, Ironing Board Sam's creative abilities are nothing short of incredible. He's writing music every day, and now performing on some of the biggest Blues stages in the world.TENTH is an intimate portrait of an entertainer who's persistance is only matched by his contagious optimism. With an unstoppable soundtrack encompassing Sam's decades long musical career, TENTH reveals the hard consequences of chasing a dream and the creative renaissance of an unheralded legend.
I met Ironing Board Sam in 2011 when he was beginning his partnership with the non-profit Music Maker Relief Foundation (www.musicmaker.org). They were helping him get gigs and were recording his first album in 15 years, and I was shooting a short movie about his comeback.
After decades of obscurity and poverty, Sam beamed positivity and preached the necessity of his "Seesaw of Life": "How can you enjoy the good times, if you don't have the bad times? That's Life!" His optimism was contagious. The film quickly developed into an intimate portrait of an unheralded entertainer and beautiful and deeply complex man.
Tenth has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the audiences who have seen the current cut of the film. Sam is also very enthusiastic about this project, but we still need you - only with your support can we finish the film! Sam’s unique talents and perspective on the world should not be shadowed – he is an amazing man, an amazing musician, and this film will tell the world! You can help us do it.
Ironing Board Sam
At 16, Sammie Moore left his small town, vowing never to return; he was going to become a musical star. Sam taught himself to play piano and sing. In response to losing his organ in a club-fire, he invented the first portable electronic keyboard he called “the button-board,” using an ironing board as a stand for the instrument.
Ironing Board Sam was introduced to the world on the revolutionary TV show Night Train (the first all-Black musical TV show, precursor to Soul Train). Playing alongside many household names in the R&B scene, Sam was backed up and often played with Jimi Hendrix and Billy Cox at popular nightclubs in Nashville. He went on to record for eight record labels, including Atlantic and Chess.
Sam became known for his incredible showmanship and unforgettable shows. He hit the national spotlight again in the early 1980s with an underwater blues show he called "Fire and Water". Immersing himself underwater in a 1200 gallon tank he designed and fabricated himself, he'd play and sing while his drummer set his drums on fire. Sam knew Disco's rise in popularity meant fierce competition to his generation of musicians. His showmanship was his survival: A human jukebox, a hot-air ballon show, an astro-turf covered cadillac. The list goes on.
Sam fell on hard times, and faded into obscurity. He was believed to be dead after Hurricane Katrina hit, until 2 years ago when he was rediscovered in his home town, living in dire poverty. Sam began working with Music Maker Relief Foundation and has since recorded two new albums, regained the rights to many of his songs from the 60's/70's, and is playing gigs around the world.
This year I was honored to receive the Elaine Mayes Grant and the President's Grant from Hampshire College to help with production expenses. Still, there are many different costs associated with finishing this film.
- Equipment rental for final shooting
- Purchase of External Harddrives
- Editing time
- Audio mixing/color correction
- Travel expenses
We're setting our Kickstarter goal at $5,000, but every dollar we are able to raise will enable us to do more for the film:
We did it! $5,000 will enable us to make a final cut. We'll be able to get a copy out to backers, and submit TENTH into 5 film festivals!
$10,000 will allow us to expand the scope of the movie. Reaching this goal will enable us to shoot additional scenes for the film. At the 10k goal, we'll be abe to submit TENTH into 5 additional festivals!
$15,000 will allow us to get TENTH professionally color corrected and to have the audio mastered. Tom will be able to travel to one film festival to promote the film.
$20,000 will pay for a performance by Sam during a Film Festival where the film is screening

Risks and challenges
Backers will receive exclusive updates during the campaign and after with how the project is moving along. If there are any setbacks with the shooting or editing process, backers will be kept up to date.
Sam always tells me he's going to play music until he's gone. At 74, he's vibrant with life, his performances are powerful, and he's got an unforgettable story and message to share. His story needs to be told, and his music needs to be experienced. With your support, I believe TENTH can reach it's potential and be a truly unique and unforgettable story.
Thank you for your time and consideration!
