Thanks for checking out the Sunskis! We’ve received a ton of support getting this far and we’re really excited to finally share all of our hard work with everyone. We’re bringing back some incredible vintage sunglasses that were nearly lost to the pages of history. There are only five pairs left on the planet, which is why we’re here on Kickstarter—to save these sunglasses from extinction! The new shades are stylish, polarized and contagiously fun to wear.
With your support, we'll be able to bring the Sunskis back, and you can be the first to wear these awesome shades in over 25 years!
- Tom & Michael
Three years ago, Tom returned from a surf trip in Australia with a curious souvenir tucked away in his carry-on. Hiding among the sandy remains of his journey were a few pairs of colorful sunglasses called Sunskis. These vintage Australian shades haven’t been made in 25 years, and Tom’s few pairs turned out to be the last Sunskis of their kind.
We think Sunskis are a wonderful design treasure that shouldn’t be lost, so we’ve put our product design experience to the work over the past six months preparing the Sunski revival with improved craftsmanship for all to enjoy. Our updated Sunskis feature polarized lenses and hand-polished polycarbonate frames, all wrapped up in the original, vibrant design. The end result is the perfect blend between timeless style and modern sunglasses technology.
In 2009, Tom went to Australia on a shoestring budget surf trip. With a tent, a board, and a duffel bag, he made his way up and down the eastern Australian coast riding waves, making great friends, and accidentally stumbling across the Sunskis.
While visiting family in the tiny coastal town of Forster, Tom found Sunskis in a mom-‘n-pop surf shop right by the beach. A handful of pairs were out on a small sidewalk table, and they really caught his eye. They were like no sunglasses he’d seen before, so he bought the remaining pairs and wore them for the rest of his time in Australia. They quickly became his most coveted surf trip accessory, alongside his surfboard and tent.
When Tom got back to the States, he started wearing them at home and people immediately began to ask about the shades. Since everybody wanted a pair for themselves, we started doing some research about the Sunskis to try to find out how to get more for our friends. We had to wait until the Australian summertime to call the seasonal surf shack in Forster, but after speaking with them we discovered they were sold out completely. We then tried to track down the original manufacturer, but that company went out of business more than 20 years ago. With nowhere else to get Sunskis, we decided to use our own product design experience to bring these incredible frames back to life.
The new Sunskis will combine the best of the past and the present. We’ve taken the timeless design of the original frames and rebuilt the Sunskis using the latest in cutting edge sunglasses manufacturing. Check it out!
The Sunski lenses are made from multiple thermally fused polycarbonate layers. The center layer contains a horizontally polarized film to cut glare from reflective surfaces and water. The colored layer contains a bi-gradient-tint film with a variable Visible Light Transmission rating of 12% at the edges and 18% in the center, making them ideal for environments which involve both strong sunlight and strong reflected light—such as on the snow, at the beach or on the water. The flash mirrored layer heightens contrast and blocks 100% of all UVA, UVB and UV400 ultraviolet rays, far surpassing US ANSI Z80.3-2001 regulations. The final layer features a clear and durable scratch-resistant layer to keep them looking great no matter what you throw at them.
The frames are made from injection-polycarbonate plastics that are hand-polished and assembled. The construction material is the lightest and most durable available on the market, while the elasticity of the arms provides a universal fit for the wearer’s face. It’s also transparent and neon and awesome. The aluminum composite hinges feature a molded pin that is part of the frame material, preserving flexibility while heightening durability.
Our biggest goal with this Kickstarter project is to get Sunskis out into the world so they can be enjoyed again. As a result, the rewards for your support are pretty simple: you get Sunskis! We’re also offering two awesome t-shirt designs (available in men’s and women’s styles) celebrating the Kickstarter launch. If you choose a reward that includes a t-shirt, you can pick what style and size you would like at the end of our Kickstarter campaign.
Every rewards tier will include a handwritten thank you card and an invitation to our launch party in San Francisco. After that, we have a few options to choose from, all of which will get you at least one pair of polarized Sunskis. Check them out here, and alongside the campaign to the right. All U.S. shipping is free, but if you are an international friend, please add 5USD to your pledge.
