Toil Screen Printing Collage Press
I'm building a Small Scale Screen Printing Press for the purpose of reproducing Collage via the medium of silk screen printing
Hi. My name is Jay Anthony Berrones. I'm a collage artist living and working in Mexico City, Mexico. For much of my twenties I was a cook in fancy restaurants. I was fortunate enough to learn a lot about how I function as an artist, business person and overall human. What I learned is that I love using my hands to make things for people that get them stoked to go do something for themselves. TOIL Press is my humble attempt to combine all of the skills and insight I've gained the past decade in kitchens into one productive entity. A "Stoke Machine" if you will...
TOIL Press is a 4 Color Process Screen Printing endeavor with a soft spot for collage quite obviously because I am a collage artist and enjoy looking at all the weird stuff the same way an MC loves a clever rhyme.
What is 4 Color Process Printing?
4 color process is a commercial technique used to print full color images. This technique was originally adapted to be able to mass produce newspapers and other media in 1875 by a crafty Englishman by the name of Robert Barclay.
Without getting too technical, CMYK refers to the four colors used in the printing process: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (Black) . Very basically, when the four colors combine they give tonal variation to the respective areas of the photo to print something like this:
What is the purpose of TOIL Press?
The main purpose of TOIL Press is to be an axis point for the reproduction of collage art. Analog AND Digital! As a collage artist, I remember wanting to offer prints of my own collages for sale and only reverting to office depot and kinkos for these prints. From the start, I knew I wanted something a bit more intimately produced. And while high quality "giclee" art prints are also available, I simply enjoy making things with my hands and consider it an honor to both; carry on the tradition of screen printing and offer another outlet for reproduction to Collage Artists.
My hope for TOIL Press is that it will bring more attention to the collage community as it continues to grow into it's very own sophisticated and stand alone art form. I'd love to see Collage Gig/Concert posters for big name concerts! Or beautiful installations at airports of super weirdo collages! The list could go on and on. Bottom line, my hope is that TOIL Press will allow Collage to participate in the visual art community in a new and exciting way! That's all I could really ask for.
Why Do I believe in Toil Press so much?
The first sign is that I've never felt this driven to make something come to fruition in my 30 years of life as a human. It combines all the things that I find invigorating into one: Working with my hands. Admiring strange, quirky art. But most importantly; process and industry.
The name TOIL is derived from the idea that we as humans are supposed to work relentlessly. But I'm pretty hard headed and somewhat of a punk, so I didn't want to work at just anything. I wanted to make damn sure that whatever I'm going to pour myself into was something that I chose to do! And for the first time in my 30 years, I wake up excited to put in a long days work. Through this I've come to get a grip on what it might mean to "Live to Work" and not the other way around.
What services will TOIL process offer?
At first all TOIL Press is prepared to offer is print on flat stock. (This does NOT EXCLUDE Wheat Paste Posters!!!) But as the idea continues to grow and mature we will be able to offer textile printing as well! Things like clothing, bags, bed sheets, stickers etc. and HOPEFULLY skateboards in some capacity. But for now. Just prints.

Risks and challenges
There are risks and challenges involved in this endeavor. First of which is that this is an all or nothing venture for me. To be clear, the funding raised will also go towards paying rent for the studio space and housing.
So to speak!... if I can't make this work, I don't want to think about what I'd have to revert to as a career!
Logistically speaking, the obstacles I foresee causing delays are things such as:
- Figuring out where/how to acquire materials in a new and HUGE city.
- Transporting materials to be able to build resources necessary to produce artwork efficiently, expediently and to quality standard.
Other than these minor details, I plan to be hard at work every day to get these things done to be able to get them out to you on time. In the event that I can't get any one of the rewards out on time there will be a detailed message as to why.
I appreciate your patience waaaay in advance!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
