A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
FRIDA KAHLO FIGURINE
By supporting this campaign, you will help us create a charming Frida Kahlo action figure. Quick facts about the figurine:
It is 5 in or 12 cm tall and made of high quality plastic (PVC).
An adorable monkey is attached to her back.
It comes with a fresh wild rose scent (yes, you read that right!)
The figure comes in a high-quality box that presents interesting facts and art inspired by Frida Kahlo. It is possible to cut out the artworks from the side of the box and display them on a mini-easel.
WHY AN ACTION FIGURE?
Today Is Art Day's mission is to make art history more fun and accessible to a wide audience.
We are developing a line of action figures, called the 'Art History Heroes Collection.' Frida is the second artist in the collection. The Vincent van Gogh action figure was successfully funded on Kickstarter in March 2017.
What we want to accomplish with the Frida Kahlo action figure:
Pay tribute to one of the greatest painters of all time
Develop a new kind of product for art history fans
Make art history more enjoyable
DO YOU HAVE THE RIGHTS TO USE FRIDA KAHLO'S IMAGE?
Yes. We have partnered with the Frida Kahlo Corporation that owns the rights to the Frida Kahlo brand name worldwide.
We're very happy to have the Frida Kahlo Corporation on board! For more info about the Frida Kahlo Corporation, follow them on Facebook and Twitter.
WHEN WILL I GET MY LITTLE FRIDA?
If the funding is successful and production goes according to plan, delivery is expected in September 2017.
Stretch goal #1: postcard insert ($65,000)
You want to display the beautiful artworks from the side of the box… but you don’t want to cut them out and ruin the box? We’ve got you covered. If we reach $65,000, all figurines will come with a postal card insert replicating the artworks from the right side of the box. Cut the artworks, display them on your mini-easel and keep your box intact!
Stretch goal #2: Bonito ($80,000) Do you know Bonito? He was Frida Kahlo’s parrot. Apparently, he performed tricks at the table in exchange of pats of butter. Mmm… delicious. If we reach $80,000, we will include Bonito in the package! You will be able to attach Bonito in the same spot as the detachable heart. How cool?
Stretch goal #3: next action figure reveal ($100,000)
If we reach $100,000, and only if… we will reveal to our backers in a private message (not publicly on Kickstarter) which artist will be the next action figure in the collection.

So far, we have created an action figure design, built a prototype, selected a production company, and identified a worldwide shipping partner. The following steps are still ahead:
Mass production of the action figures
Fulfillment and shipping
The last steps of this project are not cheap. This is why we are looking for support of the community to help us make it a reality.
HOW WILL THE MONEY BE SPENT?
The money will be used to cover the following costs:
Design and prototype (10%)
Fulfillment and shipping (20%)
Marketing and promotion (5%)
Kickstarter fee (10%)
*** Value Added Tax (VAT) not included. Pictures based on prototype. Final product may differ from images.
WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD. Small parts. This is not a toy. It is not designed nor intended for, children under the age of 12.
Risks and challenges
In this type of project, the following risks are important to consider:
- Equipment failure
- Delays in production
- Delays in shipping
In order to minimize these risks, we invested a great deal of time in identifying the best providers on the market.
We have partnered with Symbiote Studios, who has been in the toy manufacturing industry since 2007. Apart from being great to work with, they have offices in the US, and close to their factory in China to ensure high quality.
We’ve also partnered with ShipMonk for fulfillment and shipping worldwide. They specialize in backer rewards and fulfilling orders for crowdfunded campaigns on Kickstarter. They make complicated processes very smooth and easy.
Everything is in place. Now we just need your support to cover the costs of running the first batch of action figures.
