A bag with all the gear you need to keep yourself and your community safe in the aftermath of a natural disaster

About this project

Putting together a great disaster bag is something that's been on everyone's to-do lists for ages, but it never seems to get done. So we've designed one for you!

In the aftermath of a natural disaster it takes about 72 hours for rescue services to arrive. Our Go Bag will keep you safe and comfortable until the cavalry arrives, and will allow you to deal with any emergencies in the interim.

Starting in mid-2012, we've had over one hundred meetings with doctors, first responders, emergency medicine specialists, and members of the special forces community to refine the design of our Go Bag. The bag and gear that's come out of that process is a carefully pared-down set of equipment--everything you want, with no dead weight.

NOTE: A lot of people have messaged us asking how to back multiple Go Bags. To do that, please just select the first tier, and multiply your pledge by the number of Go Bags you'd like, up to 10. Sorry for the confusion!

The Loadout

Here's the loadout of the Go Bag, separated into functional categories. All of these items go into each Go Bag! If you were to buy all the stuff in the pack separately, it'd cost around 2x the $225 we're asking for the gear AND the pack, due to the big volume discounts we're getting! Note: To back multiple packs (max of 10 as per Kickstarter rules) please just back the first tier with whatever multiple of 225 corresponds to the number of packs you want. Thanks!

In the case of some consumables like cable-ties, batteries etc we've only shown one unit of the item to clarify what's going into the pack; shipped packs will include more than enough of each item to use and share with others.

The Manual

We set out to produce a short pamphlet that would introduce all the gear in the pack. We ended up writing a book! It teaches you how to use each piece of gear in the pack (many of which have more than one use) and also gives you all the knowledge you need to stay safe and comfortable in the aftermath of a natural disaster. Where other books give vague suggestions, we give clear, illustrated instructions. Since we think the information in it should be available to everyone, the book is licensed extremely permissivelyanyone can copy, give away, or even sell the book as long as they don't modify the information in it.

Email Reminders

While most of the stuff in the pack lasts indefinitely, some things like batteries and food have expiration dates and need to be replaced after a while. We'll send you email reminders to refresh your supplies so you don't have to worry about it! If you prefer, we can even automatically send you refreshed supplies at the 2-3 year mark when some food and batteries need replacement!

Is there anything that isn't included?

We don't include long term water or food stores. Water, because we chose to give you the tools to get fresh water anywhere (purification tabs, filters, water storage) rather than the water itself; shipping enough water to be useful would be both expensive and silly. Food, because while we do include two emergency rations that can keep you fed in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, all the different dietary restriction and preferences that people have mean that it's best for everyone to pack their own food. Having stuff you really like to eat when everything else is hectic is really nice.

We also include a list of additional things that you should add to the pack when you get it, stuff that's specific to each family like prescription medicine, infant and pet equipment, and spare clothes.

International Shipping

We've set the international shipping rates to $80, based on our estimates shipping to Europe and Asia. You will be charged actual shipping costs when we ship, and we'll refund any difference between what it actually costs to get your pack out to you and what you paid! It's possible that if you're ordering from somewhere truly remote (Antartica!) shipping will be even more than we anticipated--in that case, we'll contact you to kick in the difference, or else we'll offer a full refund on the pack.

Who are you folks?

Who made that beautiful song in the video?

That'd be Lullatone, out of Nagoya, Japan! You can get more of their music at their website, http://www.lullatone.com/

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge in this project is coordinating the large number of individual suppliers for each of the custom pieces of gear in the pack. To offset the risk of a delay if one or more suppliers fail to deliver on time, we have backup suppliers for each piece of gear in the pack.

We've successfully delivered a kickstarter-backed project before (search "TOC Map of San Francisco) and the lesson we learned is that you can't ever possibly anticipate every delay. To make sure we can deliver on time in spite of that, we built 3 months of delay into our delivery dates. This will hopefully allow us to deliver rewards early!

FAQ

  • If you'd like to back one for yourself and one to be donated, there's a tier for that now! If you'd like to back multiple packs for yourself, please just back the first tier ($225) and enter whatever multiple of $225 corresponds to the number of packs you want! Please note that there's a Kickstarter-imposed limit of 10 of any item, so we won't be able to fulfill any orders in excess of 10 packs.
