PLAYHOUSE has been fully filmed and the picture edit is complete! We'd simply love to have your support in bringing together the last bits of post-production (Music Score/Colour Grade/Trailer) to finally complete the film ready for release!
WHO ARE WE?
HEY! WE'RE FIONN AND TOBY WATTS, the Watts brothers. Thanks so much for checking out this campaign about our upcoming movie PLAYHOUSE!
We founded our film production company, FAR NORTH FILM, whilst living in the far north of Scotland back in 2011. Since then we've made hundreds of short videos, docs, music videos and dramas for all kinds of clients. But our passion has always been to make bold and exciting films for the big screen...
...which is why we made PLAYHOUSE - our debut feature length movie.
Toby wrote the screenplay, based on a story we jointly created, and we both Produced and Directed the film together. And we are SO, SO CLOSE TO A COMPLETED FILM!
Here’s some background info about PLAYHOUSE and a load of great reasons why you, our audience, should support our campaign!
WHAT IS PLAYHOUSE ABOUT?
Jack Travis is an irreverent playwright notorious for scaring audiences. And his latest project aims to be no different, having recently moved to a remote Scottish castle with a tantalisingly dark history of its own...
...But as Jack obsesses over creating his most immersive play yet, disturbances from deep within the castle's ancient walls begin to prey on his troubled teenage daughter. For the first time, Jack is forced to reckon with the unsettling consequences unfolding around him, but will he realise the danger of unearthing an historic curse before he damns himself and those he loves forever?
WE HAVE ALREADY SHOT THE FILM AND COMPLETELY EDITED IT!!! We simply need your support to help us get over the finish line and pay for the last remaining elements of post-production to complete the most exciting independent film project the far north of Scotland has ever seen. 'Seriously?' Read on...
WHY ARE WE MAKING THIS FILM?
We're obsessed with movies. Watching them. Making them. And we know what it is to go completely mad trying to make something creative and wonderful, something you crazily think loads of other people will enjoy too. Ever since we were little boys messing around with a video camera, we've dreamed of making a feature film together. As brothers who've stuck by each other through thick and thin our whole lives, we've become the best of mates. And we think we've got some truly epic and exciting stories to tell as the Watts brothers, stories that will thrill and entertain audiences all over the world.
We had a very eccentric upbringing at a castle in the far north of Scotland with a writer-father and an actress-mother. It was only a matter of time before we brought together our own personal influences with our passion for filmmaking to produce an original feature length movie filmed entirely in our homeland of Caithness - the county cinema has sadly long-forgotten to embrace....
Our feature film PLAYHOUSE is the FIRST EVER to film entirely on location in the totally unique county of Caithness! Whilst the rest of Scotland has received crews from Skyfall, Harry Potter, The Dark Knight, Braveheart, Trainspotting, Local Hero and loads of others, the only fiction feature film recognised by the industry to have even shot at all in Caithness is The Silver Darlings - way back in 1947!
We want to build up our film production company, FAR NORTH FILM, to become an established pioneer of quality independent feature films with a special emphasis on producing movies in the far north of Scotland. And PLAYHOUSE is our first ever one.
Why not join us in our journey to complete the final stretch of post-production on this groundbreaking debut movie?
WHO STARS IN PLAYHOUSE?
William J Holstead plays the charismatic 'Jack Travis' who pits his own wild ego against the welfare of his isolated daughter, with terrifying consequences... Grace Courtney plays 'Bee / Beleth', Jack's troubled teenager who discovers things about her father's work she wishes she could forget...
Helen Mackay plays 'Jenny', Jack's neighbour, a local girl intriguingly concerned by what Jack might be up to... She's joined by James Rottger who plays 'Callum', her frustrated husband who struggles to understand why she wanted to move them back to the far north at all...
PLAYHOUSE also guest stars experienced independent film actress, Rebecca Calienda, as well as budding young Scottish actresses Eilidh McLaughlin and Mathilde Darmady.
SNEAK PEAK AT THE FILM!
As well as a bespoke orchestral score composed by Dan Baboulene (Eaten By Lions, 2019), PLAYHOUSE will also feature music from up and coming Doom band, 'Kurokuma'.
WHAT WILL ULTIMATELY HAPPEN WITH THE FILM & WHERE WILL IT BE SEEN?
We've entered PLAYHOUSE into America's best known horror genre film festival, Screamfest LA (where the incredibly commercially successful film Paranormal Activity was picked up!) and we have a detailed strategy for approaching Sales Agents and Distributors. These folks can sell the film internationally and in the UK on DVD, in shops and through Video-On-Demand platforms like Amazon Prime, iTunes, Google Play, Shudder, The Horror Channel and many others.
We are also in discussion with a big UK cinema chain about a potential release so we'll have updates about that in due course...

HOW WILL THE FUNDS BE USED?
Okay, so here's the breakdown of how we need to use the funds we raise:
- £4K = Film Score Music
- £1.2K = Colour Grade
- £1.5K = Final Editing 'Deliverables' & Trailer Editing
- £2.2K = Kickstarter Fees & Pledge Fulfilment
- TOTAL = £8.9K
And again in a bit more detail...
- Film Score Music - we're going to be recording our moody, thrilling and atmospheric soundtrack with a live orchestra! Amazing! Having REAL (not synthetic, computer imitation) orchestral music will lift the quality of the film and the experience of watching it SOOOO MUCH...!
- Colour Grade - another specialist job requiring a high level of skill to manipulate the colours and look of the footage to match different shots, times of day, and generally create the right tone and feeling throughout the film.
- Final Editing Deliverables & Trailer Editing - in the last stages of making a film you have to provide certain 'deliverables' to exhibitors and distributors so they can market and screen your film. All this is extra work for our editor - not to mention the cutting of a really awesome trailer for the film!
- Kickstarter Fees & Pledge Fulfilment - this may be self-explanatory but we need to pay Kickstarter fees for using their platform as well as put aside some funds to pay for creating and delivering all the cool perks we've offered to everyone.
WHY DO WE NEED THIS SUPPORT FROM OUR AUDIENCE?
Filmmaking is REALLY expensive! We've already put so much of our own money into this film as well as raised a load from investors, friends, family and even random people we've met in the sauna (literally!). And now we just need that little boost to finish up!
We always planned to do a crowdfund like this towards the end of post-production and so here it is - an opportunity for our fans, old and new, to join us and become part of an exciting adventure to produce a thrilling supernatural horror movie set in an awesome Scottish castle in a never-before-seen Scottish county!
We passionately believe that a lot of people will enjoy this film that we've put our lives and souls into for the past few years. Whether you're a thriller/horror fan, a lover of legends and mystery, Scottish castles or films about crazy artists, or even a farmer from Caithness who'd love to see their home feature in a proper movie - we know this movie is for you! You are all the reason we have made it!
And we promise, you're gonna love it.
Risks and challenges
The great thing about having shot the film and edited the whole thing, is that we've shot the film and edited the whole thing already! We really do just need that last bit of support to complete the film. So if we hit our target we'll be carrying on as planned with all the post-production work that's needed. And within the next few months we'll have a superb film finished and ready for festival submission.
We have a team in place to help fulfil the delivery of your perks on time, so rest assured that you'll receive those in due course. However we should say that gaining entry to film festivals or securing a promising distribution deal (a deal that gets the film sold as widely as possible across the globe) might mean that we have to wait a bit longer than expected to release the film or make DVD/Blu-Ray copies of it. It's hard to predict these things at this stage. We'll keep you fully updated all along our journey so you'll always know what's going on and you can always ask us a question if you have any concerns about anything. Either way we're fully committed to ensuring that our very important backers - you! - get what you've paid for and enjoy being part of PLAYHOUSE the feature film.
