Hippopotamuses. They are one of the most dangerous animals on earth. But also pretty adorable, right? Anyway, I wanted to make a card game that highlighted nature's big purple monsters, so I asked the classic question: what if a hippo went to a gourmet restaurant? The game pretty much made itself after that.
Hangy Hippos is a delightful combo-building card game for 2-5 players. It's easy to learn, simple to set up, and only takes a few minutes to play (a few minutes of pure FUN). The game will consist of 120 high-quality 2.5"x3.5" cards in a tuck box.
I've been working on this game for quite a while and I'm very excited to see it realized, but this Kickstarter isn't just about printing a card game. It's also about helping a group of entreupuerial artists jumpstart their fledgling company.
Our very small, VERY humble business is called The Gauchos. We're a group of animators, artists, and game-makers who have banded together with the goal of making great original content. Unfortunately we are currently operating on less than a shoestring budget (because we had to eat the shoestrings).
The $12,000 we're asking for will go completely to the printing and shipping of the game, with plans to print 2000-2500 decks. Selling the decks will generate a modest profit (to buy new shoestrings), but more importantly it will help us get our name out into the world as purveyors of excellent entertainment.
First: check out this gameplay video!
Now, if you're done with the video, here are some handy bullet points:
- The goal of the game is to prepare orders for customers. The bigger and fancier the order, the more points you get.
- While you are trying to build up orders for your customers, the Hippo will be getting more and more hangry, until finally he explodes and eats someone's food!
- You can play cards to move the Hippo around and put your competitor's food in danger. There are also a variety of action cards to help you sabotage them.
- Finally: when all the customers are fed the game ends and the player with the most points wins.
A few years ago I Kickstarted another card game called LLAMANOMICS. It's a game of adorable llamas (and a few alpacas) and cutthroat capitalism! These two games go together naturally, as everyone knows that the only things more dangerous than hippos are llamas.
If you'd like to learn more about it, here's the link to the Kickstarter:

The game is complete and is ready to be printed as soon as it is funded. Throughout the Kickstarter I will be adding additional art to action cards, hangry cards, and garnish cards; and making any minor gameplay tweaks that are deemed necessary as the game undergoes continuous playtesting.
We are still receiving quotes and vetting printing companies around the United States. For the time being we are planning on having DeLano Services do the printing. This was the company that printed my previous Kickstarter, Llamanomics. They were excellent to work with and fulfilled the order much faster than expected.
The video storyboard and animation was done by the very talented Jarom Neumann. Check out his work! http://www.jaromneumann.tumblr.com/

Risks and challenges
We are experienced with the process of printing and shipping a product. And while we will be very thorough in our planning and logistics, it's always possible that there will be hitches with manufacturing, so we've left a little cushion in projected fulfillment times. We'll work to establish relationships with the manufacturers and sort out the kinks ahead of time to ensure timely roll out for the game.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
