Grill Mounts are Here!! Ovens are Under Way!!
Hope everyone is doing well and looking forward to fall! It's been a hot, beautiful and productive summer here in Tennessee, and TNSD has seen a lot of progress, challenges, and changes in the past few months.
Probably the biggest change - we bought a new building! While this process took a bit longer than expected - apparently the seller was not aware of our Kickstarter deadlines - we are super excited to have a new home with so much more room to expand and grow our exciting business. We appreciate your patience and continued support while we go through the countless real-life challenges of creating our new product manufacturing company.
Grill Mounts are Here and Shipping
The Grill Mounts proved to be a bit more work than expected, particularly with the gasket. We know that gaskets in the BBQ world are a point of particular consternation, with many ripping, tearing, burning and simply falling apart. We didn't want to settle for anything less than the best, so we spent the time, energy and money to develop our very own gasket from scratch - unlike anything else on the market, we believe it is, hands-down, the best BBQ gasket available. Combined with the stone, which is now in a category by itself it terms of beauty, strength, and heat resistance, we truly have a unique product and perfect, lifelong home for your favorite charcoal grill:
The pics above is the very first mount off the line, and we are making and shipping the orders now - we can only make a couple a day, and sometimes equipment breaks, so don't be surprised if it takes another couple weeks to get yours - but rest assured they are in production, and we are shipping orders in the order they were placed.
Update on Coasters
The coasters are shaping up to be as beautiful and durable as expected, and are shortly behind the Grill Mounts, and should be shipping in the next 30 to 45 days.
Behind the Scenes - Making of the Grill Mounts
For those interested, here are some behind the scenes photos and videos of the ring mount process in action:
First - the making of the grill mount "master". We do a lot of stuff at TNSD using the latest in 3D CAD and computerized CNC machining, but sometimes, we find that nothing beats old school techniques - so for the gasket groove on our ring mount, we developed our own horizontal lathe wheel to carve the perfect groove for the new gasket - shown here in operation by our own master craftsman, Jeremy Denton:
Here is a shot of an unfinished ring mount being test-fit with a new gasket - as you can see, the finish and texture of the stone is, as they say in Italy, "primo!":
Ovens are Under Way
Now that we've got the baking stone and grill mount engineering and molding completed, we've started to transition and focus more of our attention on the big finale - the Relic Oven.
We've already done a significant amount of tweaking and engineering to get the Relic ready for prime time, from new gasket design, to the chimney, to getting our production line ready to handle the volume, we are well on our way and fast approaching production.
One of the biggest additions is the new front door. The functional prototype below gives an idea of what it will look like (but it will be powder coated black, and much cooler looking handle):
The new front door really bring the Relic into the realm of multi-purpose cooker, allowing it to work as a "low and slow" smoker just as well as a "hot and fast" pizza oven. Of course, the superior insulation and tight fit mean that the Relic holds its heat unlike anything else on the market - a small side fire is all it takes to keep rolling for hours - and the deceivingly spacious interior gives you plenty of room for those big meats - as evidenced by our very own pitmaster-in-training and part-time-beard-model Robert Jewell:
The new door also lets you use the Relic for medium to high temp searing, while retaining more of the heat than you would with an open door - regulating the heat is as easy as sliding the door in or out to adjust the airflow - listen along to the searing of the meat with the Tennessee crickets singing along in the background:
Of course, we continue to put the OG prototypes through the ringer - taking them out on the road to make sure they can handle the abuse. We are happy to report that they are holding up even better than expected:
Final Comments - Schedule for Relics
Again, we very much appreciate everyone's patience and support, and for the question that is on everyone's minds: we are in high hopes to get the first Relic's out by the end of this year - we have a lot of work to do between now and then, but we feel that this is an obtainable goal. As with the other products, we take pride in building them to last a lifetime, and we will not rush the process just to deliver an inferior product. We know the ovens are not cheap, and want everyone to have a product that will stand up to decades of use and abuse. That is our commitment and we look forward to getting the ovens to you soon!
All the Best,
The TNSD Team
