About this project
Introducing the TLS Connect: The World’s Smartest Professional Backpack
The modern professional is completely reliant on technology. Yet ultimately, it’s the human brain that’s responsible for keeping track of our belongings—and as we all know, humans are not infallible. Leaving a smartphone at home can kill productivity; leaving a laptop on the plane can be catastrophic to business; leaving for a vacation without medication can be dangerous to your health.
With so much at stake on a daily basis, we decided to put a new technological Twyst on the professional backpack—by taking human fallibility out of the equation, and giving the bag its own BRAIN.
Check out the video to see how it works:
TLS Connect: The Technology
It all starts with a list. We all make mental, physical or digital checklists to help us keep track of the essentials of modern life. Whether you're traveling across town to your office or around the world on vacation, chances are you've got more things to carry than you can count on one hand. Smartphone. Tablet. Laptop. Keys. Passport. Medication...and so much more. Being without just one of these essentials can put a serious damper on your productivity or well-being. We wondered, what if your backpack could keep track of your belongings?
Enter the TLS Connect: The World's Smartest Professional Backpack. This groundbreaking backpack is fitted with Twyst Smart Bag Tracking Technology that enables users to connect their belongings to the backpack itself. The reader is linked to a smartphone app that registers and stores each device, so the TLS Connect can immediately send a message to the user’s smartphone if a registered item is missing or removed. The backpack comes with RFID adhesive tags that can link the backpack to up to 50 unique belongings, via the RFID reader and low-energy Bluetooth signal.
A New Twyst on RFID
RFID (radio frequency identification) technology uses electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track objects through a radio signature. The technology isn't new, but we've put our own unique Twyst on it. As the creator of an advanced Internet of Everything platform, Twyst specializes in the development of breakthrough uses for RFID—and we've already successfully used the concept of the "app-based digital checklist" to totally transform the in-store checkout experience. Simply put: our technology and expertise make bags do really cool stuff.
As the leading online retailer of luggage, backpacks and travel accessories, our fellow Denver-based business eBags has already received accolades for its structurally smart private label luggage and commuter bags. Making them technologically smart is a natural next step—so this felt like a natural partnership. We believe the TLS Connect will pave the way for a new generation of truly indispensable travel and professional bags.
Help Us Make Smart-Bag History
The bag isn’t perfect yet—and neither Twyst nor eBags will settle for anything less than perfect. Throughout the prototyping process thus far, we have proven that the technology and bag work beautifully together on a macro level. But both the read and report technology and the backpack need additional refinement to work seamlessly together. After all, we're asking you to entrust your most essential belongings to a bag...that bag had better be REALLY smart. So, because we can all agree on the importance of the checklist, here's what remains to be done:
- Refine “bag shielding” so our smart tracking system is the only one that identifies your stuff in your bag
- Modify our read and report technology to best identify what's in your bag; we want 100% accuracy along every step of your journey
- Integrate efficient battery and power systems—considering weight, hours of readiness, and the ability to recharge your devices on the go
- Development of a user-friendly smartphone application that will enable users to easily record, identify and track belongings
This is your opportunity to get involved on the ground floor—with a product that will truly revolutionize the journey for professionals and travelers. No more worrying about what you might have left behind, or lost along the way. The World’s Smartest Professional Bag has your back, so you can have more time to spend as you like and stop worrying about how to keep up with all your stuff.
Who Are We?
Twyst and eBags are pioneers in smart bag design and technology. The teams reside out of Denver, Colorado, where adventures await at every corner. Both companies recognize that each journey is unique—and uniquely important. Whether a customer commutes to Manhattan, treks Machu Picchu or commutes to work, we clear the path for a smooth journey. Every new product is an opportunity to “do better.”

Risks and challenges
If giving a bag a brain were easy, somebody would have done it already. Our promise to you is that with a successful Kickstarter campaign, we will deliver The World’s Smartest Professional Backpack. Yes, there are challenges—but our team has the strategy and expertise to overcome them. Our goal is to be as transparent as we can about the process (without giving away our trade secrets, of course!) so our investors can truly take this exciting journey with us. With that in mind, we've anticipated a few compelling questions you might have before you dive in.
1. Why Twyst + eBags?
To this partnership, the Twyst development team brings deep experience in hardware development, RFID technology, data modeling, machine learning and software development; eBags brings 15 years of proven expertise in the design and development of travel bags and professional cases. Both Colorado companies share an entrepreneurial spirit—and a tireless dedication to improving the customer experience.
2. Why did we set the project funding goal so high?
Both Twyst and eBags are "do it right or don't do it at all" kind of companies. We want to ensure that the TLS Connect is a product our customers can enjoy for years. We’ve also done our homework on crowd-funded campaigns, and we know that many of them struggle to move from prototype to production. When you're developing a brand-new concept, it's easy to underestimate costs—and that's a mistake we refuse to make.
3. Yikes—who else can see what's in my bag?
In order to ensure that ONLY you can see the contents of your TLS Connect, we will incorporate advanced “bag shielding” into the lining of the backpack to make sure that only the Twyst Smart Bag Tracking system can detect what is in your bag. We've had great success throughout the prototyping process; now it's all about fine-tuning and preparing this important security measure for mass manufacturing.
4. How much power will the bag need?
Good question! In order to answer it, our engineers will need to determine how often the average person loses track of things—every hour? Every minute? Once we have this critical data, we can optimize how often we need to check the contents of your TLS Connect. This will allow our read and report technology to update your smart phone only when necessary, so it uses battery power with the utmost efficiency.

With your help, the TLS Connect can LITERALLY help people keep it together. We encourage you to check out the various funding levels at right and if you're inspired to do so—help this great idea take flight!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
