In the summer of 1996, I began photographing the Green Bay Packers for Dick Schaap's book, Green Bay Replay.
That season culminated with the Packers winning Super Bowl XXXI.
This was the first time the Pack had won the Super Bowl since my dad's team won Super Bowl II in 1968.
In 2000, 50 photographs from this project were exhibited at the Leigh-Yawkey Woodson Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin and then toured art venues throughout the state for the next three years.
2016 will be the 20th anniversary of that season and with your help, I'd like to publish a coffee-table photography book of my photographs. Dick used words to tell the story of the relationship between Lombardi's Packers and Holmgren's Packers and the fans that loved them and now my book will tell that story in pictures.
You'll see photos of Bart Starr with Brett Favre, Willie Davis with Reggie White and you'll see Paul Hornung and Willie Wood as Honorary Co-Captains at midfield for the NFC Championship game coin toss.
And of course, you'll see shots of the fans plus much, much more.
I need your help to cover the costs of hiring a photo editor, a text editor, a book designer, drum scanning and post-processing the negatives and printing and shipping the books.
And check out the Inside The Locker Room magazine here: https://vimeo.com/139093198
I have no doubt that deadlines will be met and the book will become a reality. Of course all backers will be kept aware of the book production process as it happens via regular updates. I can't wait to begin production of this book!
Risks and challenges
One of the challenges will be the technical aspect of drum scanning the negatives, post processing the scans and getting consistent CMYK conversions suitable for printing. I shot that season on many different types of film and getting a consistent color throughout the book will be tricky.
Another challenge is finding and co-ordinating my team: I already have a great photo editor (thank you Jimmy Colton!) but I'm still looking for the right book designer and printer who can help take my book to the next level.
The text is going to be an interesting challenge. I want to get remembrances from the people in the book and if they're no longer with us, I'd like to get extended captions from their children.
Another challenge will be editing that text and I'd like to enlist an editor who understands the mystique of the Green Bay Packers' storied history.
And finally, I've enlisted my Dad and Jeremy Schaap to contribute text to the book. I'm so excited!
