Steampunk inspired metal poker-size chips or coins, ready for use in tabletop gaming, in a variety of metal finishes.

What are Tinker Gearchips?

Tinker Gearchips are a series of metal gaming coins, made of a zinc alloy and plated with a variety of metal finishes.  They are standard poker chip sized, 39mm in diameter and 3.5mm in depth, and they weigh just under an ounce each.  They are solid coins, with a good heft to them.  The Tinker logo features on one side, and the Project Khopesh logo on the other (we're not really sure which one is "heads" and which is "tails").  Their gear-toothed edges let them mesh with each other, because hey, if you're making gear coins, they should work, right?

The moulds are made, and the campaign photos are of actual production models.  These were made as a part of the Tinker Deck campaign, and we made a few extras... but there have been some requests for more that we just can't fill without doing a new production run.

That's our purpose in this campaign, then, to make more of these coins.

Since these are metal, their finishes will catch the light differently, and look different under different lighting scenarios, so we've taken a series of photos to illustrate some of this effect.  Outdoors, they might look like this:

But indoors under a light, they might look like this:

And indoors with natural lighting, they might look like this:

We settled on these five finishes because they can be distinguished from each other fairly easily.  The "grey family" of finishes can be slightly tricky to differentiate in some lighting, but the Chrome finish is consistently very bright, the Black Nickel is shiny but dark, and the Dyed Black finish is more matte and has some mild "antiquing" in the design's topological recesses.  The Antiqued Copper and Antiqued Bronze are easy to pick out in just about any light.

There are more photos of these over on our Pinterest page, for those so interested.

Why make these... again?

This is an "echo" campaign, picking up where the Tinker Deck campaign left off.  There was interest in making more of these coins, so we're trying to get together enough interest to make a production run viable.  We're not in a situation where we can just make a ton of these and then hope to sell them later, so we need to get an order put together and then make enough to fill that demand.

Thankfully, the company that is making these has the mould ready to go, and we've worked with them enough that they are happy to do business with us again.  This means we can have a relatively low base goal to meet the minimum production run, and it will also mean that we don't have to wait for some of the production processing.  They are ready to make more, and happy to do so.

Who?

I am T. Eshelman, or more frequently, just Tesh. I am a happily married father of four, technical artist and animator in the video game industry by day, game designer, artist and photographer in my hobby time. I fit the occasional blog post in as well, over at Tish Tosh Tesh. I love machinery and I love to see how it ages over time. I have a series of game components and games in mind that fit this Tinker theme, like the Tinker Dice, the Tinker Decks, and these Gearchips are another piece of the puzzle. Good machines are made of good parts, and I'm excited to see what we can build. Thank you for stopping by, and I look forward to hearing from you as time goes on!

Rewards

We've put together some sets of Gearchips, and the pledge levels as they exist now should be flexible enough to cover a lot of situations, from a game of Checkers to a game of Poker.  There are some "choose your own" tiers as well, just in case, though we're asking a little bit more for those because of the time it takes to process them.

We do have some Tinker Dice and Tinker Decks left over from those projects for anyone so interested.  We'll be offering those as Add-ons, though we're not sure yet if we'll use BackerKit again, Pledge Manager or just use Kickstarter's native system and a lot of spreadsheets and notes.  If you have a strong preference in any direction on those options, please let us know.

Whatever the case, Tinker Decks (of either design, more photos on Pinterest) will be $10 each and Tinker Dice will be $4 each (with a limit of four dice, beauty shots on this update from that campaign).

The Gearpunk Dice are a bit up in the air at the moment, but we'll update when we have news for those who may be interested in those.

We've also had some people ask about the Tinker Dealer Coins, so we're making those available as well for $8 each.  They come in antiqued nickel, antiqued copper and black nickel.

Stretch Goals

We don't have a lot of plans for stretching in this campaign.  We may offer new pledge tiers if there is enough interest in packages that aren't offered at the moment, but we'll evaluate that as we go.  We've looked into offering custom chip cases, but they tend to be very expensive, both the individual price and the "production run" price.  We'll keep looking into those, but for the moment, we're just focused on the Gearchips.

Thank you, everyone!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The art is done, the coin moulds finished, and we've previously ordered two batches of coins from the company, so we know they do great work in a reasonable time frame. The coins are being made in China, so there may be shipping glitches or delays, but we've had great success with this company so far. Once the coins are in our hands, we'll need a bit of time to get everything prepped and sent, and human error might occur, but we'll do our best.

Mistakes can happen to anyone at any time, and random accidents can occur, but we're confident in the production pipeline for these Gearchips.

We *are* still waiting on the Gearpunk Dice to finish fulfilling our previous Tinker projects, but we've finished up everything else that we can without those. This is one of those things that's out of our control, with the production company taking a very long time. That said, the Gearchips will be using a company that works rapidly and effectively, and we're looking forward to working with them again.

FAQ

  • We'll be asking you what you'd like for Add-Ons after the project has ended. Most people will add whatever extra money they need to their base pledge, and then we'll sort out what it's for in surveys. There are ways to add money after the campaign, whether via PayPal, BackerKit or Pledge Manager, but we're not sure yet what approach we'll use at the moment.
