What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About this project

Builders of tiny houses trying to get as many people as possible to experience time in a tiny home. Well built in rural Maine, by a family of builders. Each house is unique, using a variety of materials and customized to individuals. 'Small' is a hard sell to people geared to think "bigger is better".

Our solution is to have people spend time in one of our tiny houses. Few or no amenities such as internet and cable TV, but a quiet off the grid experience few will forget. The standard basic tiny house actually starts at 8'x8', the perfect size for one or a cozy two to share. We would like to share this experience with as many as possible, that is the main reason we created this Kickstarter fund. A finished tiny house costs about $16,000.00 to build properly. This project would create two such houses. We also are constantly innovating and trying to incorporate new green materials into building. The two built this year will be prototypes for future projects.

The first one we believe we can build almost entirely green, with both post consumer materials, and by reusing parts that are not available in green builds. We know there is a demand for this because of the many people that ask, which is why we are determined to make it possible.

The second house will be steamlined for cost, making our most economical plan to date. We do intend to make this plan, material list, and basic instruction available to the public after we work out the details during building it. Making it possible for the average person to build and own their own tiny home.

We have noticed some projects on Kickstarter that don't seem to show any progress with their production, let alone their awards. We are going to be expanding our choices of awards over the next several weeks, and post pictures of the new selections as they are tangible items. There is a way to 'Manage your pledge' which will allow you to choose a different award if you already pledged here, but see a different award you want more. We are also going to try to do at least weekly updates, to show everyone our  progress as we head into the building season. Those of course will be found under the 'Updates' tab available in the menu above.

Risks and challenges

This project will make two more tiny houses available to guests. So they can experience for themselves the simple joy of a tiny house. This Kickstarter is scheduled to last over 8 weeks, ending May 20th. This was to give as many people as possible the opportunity to participate in this project. We already have materials and funding to start the two houses, which we will do during the actual fundraising.

With hopefully enough people interested to start booking at the end of May/Memorial day weekend. That way they can actually experience part of the building process first hand. Perhaps even be inspired to build their own Tiny. We want to educate and share this experience with as many people as possible. Even if Kickstarter does not provide enough people, we can still book others that are interested in our project into our tiny houses for the building season. More photos will be posted in the next month as the building season starts.

We also understand that the fundraising is 'all or nothing' and will leave an option open to all those funding this to still receive their award, even if the goal here is not met. Offering the 8' frame as a reward, as it is our most popular. This is the size you can take on roads without a permit, making moving and transporting your Tiny a breeze.Over 8'4" wide, 13'6" high and you do need a permit to move.So keep that in mind when you add siding to your frame. Anything over 2" in thickness could make your Tiny house too wide. That is why we use a sheathing which can be layered over directly and insulate within the frame itself. Our 8x8 frame usually sells at $1,100. The 8x16 frame at $2,050. The sheathed 8x8 $2.025. and the sheathed 8x16 at $3,700. Only pledges made before the deadline will be honored, and on a 'first come first served' basis to keep it fair to those who pledged early and often. We will honor all pledges at the reduced price offered if you contact us & make a request. We do this because we hate to disappoint our customers and potential Tiny House fans especially.

Sizing Note: If you absolutely need more space our frames do go up to the maximum 40'. Which would be basically pledging a maximum of 5 times, but any more would be a separate build as that is the maximum allowed to be moved by road with the necessary 25' vehicle because overhang is included in overall length. Having an 8x40 building is also not practical design wise. An 8'x32' is usually what family groups choose & 8'x16'-24' is most popular with couples and pet owners. 8'x16' is also a great size if you plan to use the Tiny for a workshop or private lodge as it is still easy to heat like an 8'x8' but offers additional living space. 8'x8' is popular as both offices and with sportsmen as bunkhouses. An option (ONLY) if you are planning on moving your Tiny to a specific location and it is not going to be moved again: Specify 'Dormer' when you receive your award survey and get your Tiny in two parts. This would require pledging 3 of the awards for frames, as the minimum to do this is an 8'x16' and a 8'x8'. Joining them on site in a typical 'L' shape on a cement pad or standard basement foundation. This is NOT suggested if you plan to keep your Tiny mobile, as connecting and disconnecting the buildings can be costly when you are dealing with roofing materials and labor time.

The $5. award, the guild of course will be available on Amazon unfortunately at a set price but will try to figure something out. We will still be drawing up the plans for the 'Economic' build etc; even if this does not get funded on here, and also honor the $10. and other pledges. We are already going forward with this project, this was just a way to share the experience with as many as possible and bring awareness about what building Tiny is all about.

Our $50. per night stay in one of our Tiny will of course be honored, though we will limit the days you book in one stay to 7 days/1week. You can pledge more than 7 days, simply choose this aware and multiply your $50 pledge by the number of days you wish to stay. We just want to make sure everyone gets a chance and the time of year they prefer, which is why we limit a booking to 7days because it is on a 'first come first' booked basis. You of course can book multiple stays. :)
