Fashion is an integral part of self-exploration and personal growth, and kids deserve more versatile clothing options than those provided by major retailers. Give your kids bold, fun fashion inspired by the pop culture you grew up with and love.
Parents, You Get It
If you’re a parent, you understand the struggle of shopping at a major clothing chain. The shamelessly cutesy and frequently in-your-face gendered outfits don’t allow for the bold self-expression necessary for your child’s personal growth. Ideas about what constitutes kid-friendly, while well-intentioned, can be condescending. Tiny Bangs wants to flip the script. We believe childhood is the best time to experiment with fashion and think that expression is a huge part of kids figuring out who they are now and who they want to become. Kids should have head-turning fashion at their fingertips. We want you to be able to give your kids the clothing options you wished you had as a child.
What Is Tiny Bangs?
I'm Kirsten Bosio and I named my kids' clothing brand after my daughters' and my trademark hairstyle. As a colorful mom with 3 colorful kids, I know the pain of finding clothes that are both creative and ethical. I had my first daughter, Naomi, in 2009. Naomi was a fearless tomboy with Manic Panic colored hair who loved loud clothing. I had my second daughter, Anni in 2013. She was much more feminine, but still edgy and outside of the box. Last year, I had my son, Teddy, and although he is still little, I want him to feel free to express himself despite gender or societal norms. We couldn't find our niche at the big retailers. I was so fed up with our clothing options that I started DIYing clothes. I introduced the pop culture of the 80's and 90's to my daughters and we quickly bonded over the things I loved so much as a child. We took those interests and turned them into clothing. When my neighbors' son was turning one, I decided to make him a deeply personal gift and that was a custom punk vest. I still remember his parents' excited reaction. It filled me with such joy that I had an epiphany – people everywhere should have access to this. There are millions of little dreamers, rebels, and lovers of pop culture out there waiting for a brand like Tiny Bangs.
Tiny Bangs, Big Plans
Over the last few months, we have been tirelessly creating over 100 one-of-a-kind pieces on our kitchen table and with local artists. You can check out some of our past work here: https://www.instagram.com/tiny.bangs/ and http://tinybangs.com/ Since opening our store this past spring, we have gained many amazing customers, online followers, and built an incredible community dedicated to changing the game in children’s fashion. Because of this wonderful support and reception, we are inspired to do better. Due to lack of funding, we could not create the clothes in a wide range of sizes nor at a high quantity. It's time to manufacture Tiny Bangs clothes!
We want to start our journey with 4 distinct pieces in sizes 2T to kids' 12 that capture Tiny Bangs' aesthetic best.
1) The Interactive Skirt: a high-waisted layered circle skirt reminiscent of 90's toy notepads which create neon imprints when touched
2) Holographic Leggings: comfortable spandex leggings perfect for active kids that feature a unique, rainbow sheen
3) Harlequin Dress: the perfect mod cut shift dress for parties or everyday glam that looks like it came straight out of a dEliA*s catalogue
4) The Statement Moto: yellow & black flannel motorcyle jacket with hot pink satin lining inspired by the movie "Clueless"
Where It Will All Come From
Material sourcing is all local and found in Los Angeles' Fashion District. I personally go around to small businesses and pick out the fabric and hardware. The production team we have lined up is also here in the Greater LA Area and are both ethical and create beautifully constructed pieces. We are proud to offer a conscious and creative alternative to the big chain stores.
Where The Money Will Go
All the money that is raised from this Kickstarter will go directly into the production of the four pieces listed above. A lot of the clothing will go to our amazing backers and the rest will become stock for the very first factory-produced Tiny Bangs line. We believe in this brand and are so grateful to have the platform to kickstart the future of our business with your help.
We have several tiers of awards in place for you, the backers. Everything ranging from beautiful thank you postcards, exclusive stickers, tote bags, shirts, actual pieces from the manufactured collection, to SUPER SPECIAL rewards for those who went all in.
We live in a climate where people are condemned for being unique. Children are no different, unfortunately. I've seen firsthand with my own kids how cruel living in a world like that can be. Us weirdos need to stick together and, most crucially, support our little weirdos. Art is important, self-expression is important, and our children's identities are important. Tiny Bangs is committed to giving kids an outlet to explore their style and feel confident in doing so.
Help us bring innovative, pop-culture inspired fashion to our youngest generation!
"5 going on 15, the kids rocking a new shade of punk in these lookbook photos are the kids of Tiny Bangs. Covered in pop culture references.... these tots are sporting vibes that are way before their time."
Risks and challenges
We're optimistic that we'll be able to get all of the clothing and rewards to backers in the amount of time specified on the Kickstarter. We have already lined up a manufacturer and have samples and patterns made and the additional rewards ready to make as well. If we face any obstacles along the way, I will communicate this immediately, openly and honestly. We also have measures like a second manufacturer if the original gets backed up in case of emergency and can implement them as needed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
