The Magazine

Tiny Atlas Quarterly is the culmination of what happens when art directors, designers, photographers, writers, stylists, digital techs, photo assistants and other friends and contributors from the creative corps collaborate on visual projects of their own designing.

It is filled with rich, beautiful stories intended to convey the feelings of a place in time and includes travel details if readers also want to have a similar experience for themselves.

We've produced two issues so far, Spring 2013 and Summer 2013 and they include destinations visited for their beauty, light, intrigue and visual appeal shot on location around the world. A short list of “in the know” places to stay and dine and fun activities accompanies each story, as a way to extend our discoveries to our readers.

Founder

A few words from founder Emily Nathan about why she undertook this Tiny Atlas Quarterly adventure in the first place:

Bend, Oregon by Emily Nathan
Bend, Oregon by Emily Nathan

“When I’m working for clients, I’m trying to capture a perfect image. We’re always after the sunniest, bluest sky or the perfectly sculpted still life. Rarely do I get to join forces with my colleagues with the sole purpose of capturing something else, something less than perfect, but, perhaps, more beautiful.”

“Tiny Atlas Quarterly is a way to show the images we’re most drawn to – maybe it’s a storm sweeping over a mountain range, a quiet look, or just a silly moment – and the places and things we love and want to share.”

Our Next Issue- Fall 2013

Erin Kunkel shoots in British Columbia, coming soon!
Erin Kunkel shoots in British Columbia, coming soon!

The Fall 2013 online issue is currently in production. Highlights include:

-Photographer Emily Nathan (ba-reps.com) goes deep into South Kona, Hawaii with artist Klea McKenna (kleamckenna.com) and TAQ Arts Editor and curator Aimee Friberg (CULTexhibitions.com) as Klea makes photograms in the jungle where she spent her early years.

-Photographer/adventurer Erin Kunkel (erinkunkel.com) and her surfboard shaper husband Danny Hess (hesssurfboards.com) surf and fish in remote Nootka Island off the coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

-An autumn weekend excursion to a farm in the Catskills with photographer Tara Donne (taradonne.com), Nicolette Camille (nicolettecamille.com) from the Little Flower School in New York (little-flower-school.blogspot.com) and artist Dana McClure (danamcclure.com) foraging for fall foliage and gathering with friends for a harvest meal.

Further imagery and stories from Jaime Beechum in The Dominican Republic, from Shelly Strazis in Portland, Oregon, Southern France and Formentera, Spain. Find Collin Erie in Ethiopia, Daeja Fallas in New York City, Ashley Camper in Hawaii and more.

The Future

In addition to the Fall 2013 issue currently in production, we have exciting plans for a limited edition Tiny Atlas Quarterly printed annual edition. The printed version will celebrate all of the work we've done to date, and bring Tiny Atlas Quarterly off your screens, into the world, and hopefully, into your hands.

In order to produce the Fall 2013 issue, as well as to print a beautiful heavy-weight matte annual issue, we need partners. Tiny Atlas Quarterly has been a completely unfunded and independent publication. All of the funds needed to produce the issues so far have come from our contributors' own savings and donated time.

While we're head-over-heels in love with the process of making this magazine and expanding our wonderful and growing community of creators and readers, we no longer can continue without outside funds. This is where you all come in. By donating at any level you become part of Tiny Atlas Quarterly. If you love magazines, beautiful art and photography, and want to learn about off-the-radar destinations- donate to our campaign so we can give you lots to love back.

In the meantime, we have plenty to offer you already, at our site  TinyAtlasQuarterly.com, and by way of pledge rewards. We hope you enjoy!

The Campaign

All funds raised will be used to produce and print our first annual printed edition, in tandem with production of our next online issue (Fall 2013).

Our first print run will be 3,000 copies. (We'll print additional copies if the campaign exceeds our first goal.)

We're looking to raise $22,000, which would cover our printing and shipping costs from an esteemed printer in Vancouver, as well as some of our production costs for our site's development, design, illustration, writing, editing and photography for the Fall issue and the printed annual.

Additionally this campaign will help us build the Tiny Atlas Quarterly community. The more people we can reach, the more we can collaborate in the future, sharing our stories, in an exceptional and dynamic way.

If you love Tiny Atlas Quarterly, please pass it on! We are looking to get the word out to people like yourself, who appreciate and see the value of what we're doing and want to contribute, too.

Risks and challenges

Learn about accountability on Kickstarter.

The magazine business is a challenging one.

However, we are optimistic that our subject matter and the quality of the magazine and our team will result in success. We also are confident that there are enough people around the world with a like-minded approach to lifestyle and travel, and that, together, we can all create a thriving environment for Tiny Atlas Quarterly in terms of content and a self-sustaining business model.
