This film is about a unique sensation (occurring in the head and body) that is extremely relaxing, feels brain-thrillingly good, and is often described as a "tingly" reaction to specific sounds, visuals, and cognitive stimuli. These sounds, visuals, and stimuli are referred to as “triggers” because they elicit the tingling sensation. One popular website describes the triggers as, “slow, specific, and deliberate actions or speech. Sometimes the presence of close, personal, or nurturing attention can trigger the sensation. Very often, distinct sounds of plastic, water, soft whispers, and so on can cause strong reactions." A few common examples include: haircuts, doctor visits, the sounds of writing, and close examination of an item. The triggers may seem incredibly simple, but the body's response to them is fascinating.
In 2007 an Internet forum titled “Weird Feeling Feels Good” sparked a conversation. Groups of people started discussing this “Unnamed Feeling”, and quickly realized that the sensation they had once quietly kept to themselves is something shared by others. Indeed, thousands of people experience this sensation, with the exact number of people who experience it still unknown and growing. The term Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response or "ASMR" was eventually coined in 2010 by Jennifer Allen, the creator of the Facebook group Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response Group, and is now the most widely used term to describe the sensation.
Suddenly this sensation became more than just a private experience and more like a shared phenomenon. People have started discussing the benefits resulting from ASMR such as its ability to induce a relaxed and pleasurable state and to aid in managing insomnia, anxiety, and depression. ASMR is about more than just relaxation and pleasure, it can be used as a tool to cope with the different environments and stress within peoples' daily lives.
Learning about ASMR is interesting in and of itself, but what inspired the making of this film is the journey to understand the meaning and implications of this tingly sensation.
We have conducted an initial round of interviews on the East Coast to investigate what this story could entail. These conversations left us intrigued and excited to move forward. This fundraising campaign is designed to enable us to hear more stories, talk to more experts, and explore the bigger themes and theories.
Tingly Goal = $9,800: This will enable our team to travel across North America - using the most inexpensive forms of travel, utilizing our own equipment, and staying with friends and family when possible - to reach out to a larger swath of the ASMR community. Furthermore, some funding will go towards purchasing a few equipment items that will add production value to the film.
Tingly Stretch Goal = $20,000: Reaching this level would be icing on the cake! The extra funding would allow for international travel (such as Europe and Asia) on a low budget scale, the ability to hire an extra cinematographer for complex scenes, and enhanced post-production capabilities.
ASMR Community Support
What is an ASMRtist?
For those who experience ASMR, triggers can be encountered at random during the day. An ASMRtist is someone who creates online videos that will purposefully induce the ASMR sensation in others. An ASMRtist typically creates a YouTube channel and builds their own following within the ASMR community.
Risks and challenges
To get this project started, we have invested our own time and money because we think this is a story worth telling. After filming interviews on the East Coast, we were inspired to pursue the fascinating real-life stories that exist worldwide. We have researched and begun having conversations with dozens of people across North America, getting to know more about their ASMR experiences. We have also engaged with experts who can provide perspective along the way. The stories are there, we just need help funding our travels to hear and capture them.
We will make our absolute best effort to deliver your rewards in a timely fashion in accordance with the dates we list on our Kickstarter page. With any creative project, there are unforeseen challenges that we may have to address, but we will keep you updated as we work to deliver your rewards and a finished product. This film WILL be completed!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
