About this project

With an incredible cast of over 26 and a larger production scale than ever before, Tin Can Brothers is embarking on its biggest filmed project yet!

What's the story?

Artemis, a tenacious podcast host, has grown tired of the fluff pieces she’s been assigned by APN, the American Podcasting Network. When she finds herself in the small mining town of Connor Creek with Paul (her producer and twin brother), the corporate corruption story they’re investigating is sure to be a bust. To the twins’ surprise, the oddballs and eccentrics of this small town are harboring a secret even darker and furrier than any political scandal: werewolves. With the future of Connor Creek at stake, the Schue-Horyn twins need to decide who to trust in order to unearth the truth and stay alive.

What's the structure?

The Wayward Guide for the Untrained Eye is a 10 episode webseries inspired by the podcasts Serial and S-Town, crossed with the game One Night Ultimate Werewolf, peppered with the surreal comedy of Pushing Daisies and Twin Peaks. Wayward Guide will feature the absurd and larger-than-life comedy that you’ve come to love from the Tin Can Brothers, but won’t be shy when tugging at your heartstrings.

Additionally, as a companion piece to the show, we will be bringing on a specialized sound design team to help us produce the complete 10 episode in-world podcast that Artemis & Paul are making in Wayward Guide. This supplemental material will be released in conjunction with the series and exist parallel to the story, offering new insight into the mystery of Connor Creek and its quirky residents.

Why podcasters?

In the last few years, podcast storytelling has hit its stride in a fascinating and exciting way. Companies like This American Life, Earwolf, & Gimlet Media have tapped this new technology to bring us stories we would’ve never heard otherwise. After avidly following podcasts like Serial and S-Town, we became enthralled with the genre of investigative journalism that’s become so popular. But the question always remains: what else is there to the story beyond what we hear? What facts were redacted? Was anything purposefully rephrased? Is there a truth behind the evasive conclusions? The Wayward Guide for the Untrained Eye was conceived to answer these pressing questions with our own twisted spin.

Why a series?

We’ve tackled a variety of different forms in our work: short films, live shows, stage plays, and musicals. But telling a feature-length, 10 episode narrative through film has always been high on our list. As it became clear that the story of Artemis Schue-Horyn and the town of Connor Creek was the one we want to tell, we knew we had to take a more ambitious approach: to also produce 10 episodes of Artemis’ podcast show, The Wayward Guide for the Untrained Eye, as supplemental material to the webseries. We see this as a unique opportunity to marry both forms. Both the podcast and the show will be able to exist independently, but together will exponentially enrich how you experience the story.

And on top of all this, we wanted to jump at the chance to pepper this tale with some good ‘ol fashioned horror. Which is why we’re putting WEREWOLVES in it. Yup. You smelled that correctly. Half Human. Half Wolf. The Beasts of the Night. The perfect catalyst for a story filled with deception and thrills. Plus, the chance for some spooky creature effects!

Why now?

Getting the opportunity to produce exciting material with a fresh creative spin, populate it with some of the most talented people we know, and share it with all of you (who’ve made it possible) has been the highlight of our careers. And with every new endeavor, it’s important that we take bigger risks to make something better than what we’ve previously attempted. We feel that The Wayward Guide for the Untrained Eye could be that rewarding next step with your help as part of the team!

Writing and producing a project of this size will require a team FAR larger than our usual 3-man operation. On screen, we’ll be casting faces old and new in the biggest ensemble we’ve worked with to date. But behind the camera, we’ll be hiring dozens of collaborators to run departments for art, lighting, sound, camera, costumes, makeup, effects, with additional positions for location scouting, script supervising, production coordinating, assistant directing, and producing. Balancing a production budget that could include paying up to 50 people as well as allocating funds for rentals, insurance, props, costumes, & more, is no easy task. It’s certainly the most we’ve ever attempted to raise, but like each of our projects before, every cent will be absolutely necessary to pull off telling this story.

The Wayward Guide for the Untrained Eye is written and produced by the Tin Can Brothers (Joey, Brian, & Corey). Corey Lubowich will be helming the production as director, while Brian Rosenthal and Joey Richter will appear in the series and focus on being on-set writers and producers.

Benji Dell, the incredible talent behind our Spies Are Forever Kickstarter video, Flop Stoppers, and our upcoming short, Idle Worship, will take the lead as our Director of Photography. Benji has brought a remarkable level of professionalism and astounding cinematic beauty to our projects so far and we can’t wait to collaborate with his genius on Wayward Guide.

We’re also thrilled to bring the one and only Chuck Criss onto the project to score the series. It’s hard to not be captivated with Chuck’s musical style and sound. We are big fans of this dude and are thrilled he’s adding his talents. You can even catch some of his spooky musical motifs in the video above!

As the Kickstarter campaign continues, we will be announcing many additional cast members and their roles.

Risks and challenges

With a project on this scale, there comes quite a few risks and challenges that we have to be prepared to handle. Producing is like juggling a bunch of amorphous, blurred objects that come into sharper focus as you get closer to production. The bigger the project, the more moving parts there are and the more likely things are going to be shuffled around right up until the last possible moment.

As we move closer to the start of production and essential elements will lock in, and others will have to change to accommodate. This could mean anything from having to rewrite the story to better suit available locations or recasting actors if scheduling conflicts come up. It’s all subject to change until the footage is shot and in the can!

Of course, things could also go smoothly and work out exactly how we imagine it in our heads. And that keeps us on our toes. We find this work extremely exciting and feel confident that no matter what curveballs making the series will throw at us, we'll be able to create a product that lives up to TCB standards.
