About this project
$13,000 ACHIEVED! – We've hit our initial funding goal, which means we're moving full steam ahead on production of Flop Stoppers to get it ready to premiere at Buffer Festival!
We're so thankful for all you who helped us reach our goal so quickly! And we're thrilled you're along for the ride with us. Since we still have time left in the campaign, we're adding some stretch goals for funds that will go towards better locations, production elements, and making the short groovier!
$15,000 ACHIEVED – Every backer will get a digital download of a "Making of Flop Stoppers" featurette. If we reach this goal, we'll use the additional funds to hire a documentarian to shoot photos and videos on set to capture some really high quality behind the scenes content (that's not just on our phones when we think of it!).
$18,000 ACHIEVED – Just like all great comic book film adaptations, Flop Stoppers needs a Post Credits Bonus Scene! If we reach this goal, we'll write and film a bonus scene that will play after the credits. Possibly setting up a sequel?? Who knows!
$20,000 – Since we're going to debut this short film on the silver screen at Buffer Festival, we have to do it in style! If we reach this goal, we'll go full out and create costumes based on our fictional superheroes to walk the red carpet in at the premiere. We're bound to look crazy!
$23,000 – Our dream-on stretch goal!! If we get to $10k above our initial goal we'll release a fully produced TalkFine performed version of the title song, Stop the Flop! We will also certainly throw up everywhere.
To help us reach our Stretch Goals, we're offering several "add-on" rewards that you can add to any existing reward tier!
$5 Add-On - PDF download of an annotated Flop Stoppers script. See how it translates from the page to the screen, what we changed, and what we left out! Plus our notes and commentary in the margins!
$10 Add-on - Limited edition collector pins! Have your choice of one of our limited edition pins: Tin Can Flamingo, Flop Stoppers, Detective Dark, or Captain Cosmos!
$20 Add-on - Can't decide?? Get a PDF download of the script AND two pins of your choice!
$35 Add-on - Get them all! Get all four collectors pins PLUS the PDF script download!
How to "Add-On"
- Go to Manage Your Pledge
- Increase your pledge in the Pledge Amount box by the total $ amount of your desired add-ons
- After the campaign ends, you'll get a backer survey to fill out In that survey you'll specify which add-ons you chose
REMINDER: Just change your pledge amount, not the reward tier! E.g. If you've backed for the poster at $55 ($50 Tier plus $5 shipping), and you wanted to add the PDF script + 2 pins, you'd keep your reward tier the same, and add $20 to your pledge for a total of $75!
Picture this: You're sitting in a packed movie theater. Your mouth is dry from the salty popcorn. Your butt is sore from the rigid seats. The screen fades to black. The credits begin to roll. And sadly, you feel disappointment. Disappointment that the movie didn't live up to your expectations. Disappointment that those with the money and power chose to interpret beloved characters in a shallow and two-dimensional way. Disappointment that you spent $16 to watch this turd. With a rich source material that has stood the test of time, success seemed like a no-brainer. HOW could they fail? WHY would they choose to let down a loyal community of devotees?? And if given the chance, would YOU try to stop it?!
Our newest project, Flop Stoppers, is a journey fraught with secret organizations, high-powered executives, and, of course, music. Two fanboys will risk their lives to preserve the sanctity of the comic book lore they love. But in navigating the devious underbelly of studio system, at what point are our heroes' efforts in vain? When do their acts of bravery become acts of villainy??
As passionate pop culture and comic nerds, we've spent countless hours dissecting, examining, and troubleshooting movies we've both loved and hated. And like fans everywhere, we've wished for the opportunity to course-correct Hollywood's biggest superhero bombs and produce them with our "better" vision. Flop Stoppers is fulfilling that wish.
This is an idea that gets the three of us super jazzed, and we're always looking for a fresh way to tell stories. From four minute-long comedy sketches to a full length stage musical, we've tried our hand in a lot of mediums. And when asked to create something to premiere at Buffer Festival in Toronto this October, it soon became clear that we should write and produce a musical short film because... LIVES ARE AT STAKE!
In addition to Joey Richter and Brian Rosenthal as our nerdy duo of Spencer and Graham, the rest of the cast will feature talented performers whose work ranges from YouTube to Broadway. We’re thrilled to be working with some of these people and will announce their involvement as the campaign unfolds!
Corey Lubowich will be directing. And if all this isn't enough, Flop Stoppers will reunite the Spies Are Forever creative team for the first time since the show closed! Working with TalkFine on the score for Spies was a dream and we've been pumped to join forces again to bring you this newest adventure.
We are so excited to make this short for you guys and we think the story, themes, and tone will really resonate with the collective consciousness of both our fans and those of these popular franchises. Of course, to proudly present a high quality product will requires a little bit of money. As mentioned in the video, this goal may seem like a big ask for a short movie, but in the world of filmmaking, this budget is merely crumbs. However, we will gratefully accept all the crumbs because, to us, they are vital.
A budget of this size is going to be used primarily for equipment rentals, location fees, limited props and costumes, as well as paying for the generous work and time of our crew and cast!!
It doesn't leave much room for error, as we have exactly ONE month to deliver the project in time for Buffer Fest approval. That's right. We're gonna be coming in HOT!!! Pre-production has already begun, and shooting will almost certainly begin before this campaign is over. We'll have only a few short weeks for shooting and post production! It's moments like this that make you feel truly alive!

Risks and challenges
Our greatest challenge will be TIME, especially at the level of quality and polish we want to deliver.
Organizing our creative team and preparing to shoot this short efficiently will need to happen in a fraction of the typical amount of time. For example, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy had 2 years of preproduction before their behemoth of a shoot. Due to last minute changes in directors, The Hobbit Trilogy had several months.
Luckily, the stakes here are not as high as they were for Peter Jackson and The Hobbit films. We've designed our idea to work within a tight time frame, and production will be a whirlwind.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
