Writers Guild Award Winner Tina Cesa Ward, the Executive Producer/Writer/Director of Anyone But Me and Good People in Love teams up once again with multi-award winning actor Rachael Hip-Flores to bring you an imaginative, new, dramatic-adventure series.
Guards of Dagmar has been described as “if Alexander Payne had written The Sixth Sense” by Kim Evey, Producer of one of the biggest series on the web The Guild and the new YouTube Channel Geek & Sundry.
DIGIDAY praises Ward’s work on the web: "Good People in Love represents a new milestone for online video series, and it is the second time [Anyone But Me being the first] Tina Cesa Ward is setting one.” Ward has high hopes that Guards of Dagmar will be added to the list of milestones.
What is the story about?
Tom has given up his dreams to be star chef and takes a job as a cafeteria cook in a residency for the developmentally and intellectually disabled. There he's met by Daniel, a lifelong resident of Dagmar who witnessed the choking death of his friend during lunch time. Daniel is convinced monsters killed his friend and ever since then Daniel has stood guard during every lunch trying prevent the same fate from happening to anyone else.
When Daniel meets Tom, Daniel is convinced that new cook that says he can change the menu is actually a new Guard sent to Dagmar to help. And when Tom witnesses some unexplained events and the appearance of a mysterious woman, his skepticism about the monsters of Dagmar starts to turn to fear of the possibility Daniel is right.
What is the Transmedia Interactive Narrative only available through Kickstarter?
Not only will Guards of Dagmar engage the audience through each episode, it will also immerse the audience in the world of Dagmar through interactive storytelling and world-buiding, starting right here with the Kickstarter campaign. When the project reaches 75% of its goal, Guards of Dagmar’s new Interactive Narrative Experience (that every Kickstarter backer will have entry to) will kick into action. This is one reward you don’t have to wait for! To enhance your Dagmar world-building experience, there will be two additional videos released at separate financial milestones prior the 75% mark. So not only will you get to enjoy watching Guards of Dagmar reach its funding goal, you can begin the Dagmar experience and be a part of a major plot point in the series.
Why a Kickstarter campaign?
TINA CESA WARD: Through crowdfunding, independent storytellers get to tell their stories the way they want to tell them. I want to continue to tell stories that affect people. Stories that help them escape into a new world or make them feel right at home. I like to tell stories that test the boundaries of the web but, at the end of the day, connect with the audience for years to come.
What is the strategy for distribution?
Guards of Dagmar is a series for the web with an eye towards TV. Written in such a way to be distributed on television or broken up into individual episodes for the web, the format for Guards of Dagmar gives it the most opportunity to find a distribution home. The production is currently looking to fund its first pilot TV episode, which translates into three episodes for the web. After the episodes are produced, they will be shopped around to find the best home possible. The relationships to distributors, like Hulu, that Ward has cultivated through her past work greatly increase the chances that Guards of Dagmar will find the right home to allow a full season and more seasons to come.
Where is the funding used?
The production has already been extremely lucky to get some in-kind donations of services, starting with all lighting and grip equipment, the RED Epic camera from framesquad, along with the talents of Director of Photography Axel Ebermann who Tina Cesa Ward just worked with on the Anyone But Me series finale. Sonic Union and Dogma Studios have also generously offered post-production services. And No Mimes Media offered consulting on the Transmedia experience. But there’s still plenty to pay for, from location fees to food to a very modest cast and crew rate.
TINA CESA WARD: I believe in order to deliver high quality work, you have to hire highly capable crew. Past relationships and love of the project give us a leg up to get great cast and crew at a rate well below their normal rate.
What happens if we're funded past our goal?
If enough additional funding is raised, it will be used to produce more episodes! Otherwise, it will be put toward a very important element to any series success, marketing. Special appearances and events help increase interest and push Guards of Dagmar out to the masses. Tina Cesa Ward is booked to appear at this year's VidCon. And we continue to look at additional opportunities.
