Do you like stories about fighting, banter, friendship, bad choices, smart women, big monsters, and jeopardy both physical and moral? Then this book might be just the thing for you.
I've been writing stories about sorcerer Marla Mason for over a decade, and publishing books about her since 2007. She's my favorite character, and her world is full of larger-than-life villains, complex allies, acidic snark, and violence of the entertaining and monster-stomping sort. (Want a taste of what Marla’s all about? Here are some free stories about her, and her world.)
When my original publisher dropped the series after four books, I turned to crowdfunding to keep it alive, and thanks to readers like you, it's still going strong.
With your support, I'll be able to keep writing about Marla – and you'll get to read the latest novel before it's available for sale anywhere else.
This volume, Queen of Nothing, will be the ninth full-length book in the series. (Don't be daunted by continuity: all you need to know is that Marla's a sorcerer and part-time goddess of death with a tendency to make bad decisions and the skills necessary to deal with the consequences.)
In Queen of Nothing, a new god of pain, torment, and violence awakens, and (as you might guess from his areas of interest) he isn't very nice. He threatens to bring an age of darkness and devastation to the Earth. Marla is the only one who can possibly stop him, and even she'll need help from whatever friends she hasn't alienated yet... along with some old foes who choose to join her against a common enemy.
(She's got some pretty serious problems with her love life, too.)
I hope you can support the novel, either by contributing, or spreading the word. I've successfully crowdfunded the past five books in the series, and very much want the streak to continue.
As always, your support allows me to devote a few months to writing about Marla – months I wouldn't otherwise be able to afford. I support my family largely through freelance writing... but I'd love to write Queen of Nothing for you. If this gets funded, I can put off other jobs and devote my attention to Marla for a while.
This novel will be my summer project, and I expect to deliver all the rewards before the end of the year.
If I hit $12,000, I'll commission at least three pieces of interior artwork for the book. (Zack Stella has done the interiors for the previous two volumes, and I'd try to get him again.)
If I reach $15,000: I'll commission an original cover painting, ideally from artist Lindsey Look, who did these amazing covers for Grim Tides, Bride of Death, and Lady of Misrule.
If it goes bigger than that? I'll add more goodies.
Don't take my word for it. Here are some nice things smart and talented people have said about the books:
"Pratt is a deft storyteller whose blend of suspense, magic, and dry humor kept me entertained and turning pages... I adore Marla, her done-at-all-costs character is someone I can relate to and want to cheer for."—Kim Harrison
"The characters and world are real,
immediate, and unapologetically in-your-face, throwing you into a story
that trusts you'll keep up with the fast pace without flinching. It
charges along with crisp pacing, a fascinating range of secondary
characters, and a highly compelling lead in Marla Mason. She may be one
of the genre's requisite sharp-tongued females, but her ruthless
pragmaticism gives her a completely different feel from her fictional
"A fast-paced, thoroughly fun, satisfying read."—Kelley Armstrong,
Risks and challenges
I've successfully crowdfunded nine projects (including half a dozen through Kickstarter) in the past few years, and I don't foresee any problems with this one. If it funds, I'll devote the late spring and summer to writing, and should get everything delivered in 2015.
It's always possible there will be bumps and delays on the production process, or an unforeseen illness or other disaster, but if so, I'll keep everyone posted. (I did have some delays with last year's project Lady of Misrule due to illness, but it got done, and I'm in the process of fulfilling those rewards now. I expect things to go more smoothly with this one, as I'm allowing myself more time.)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
