We want to give artists and writers money and make a beautiful digital and physical object with the results. You can help.
Last year we (Heather Shaw and Tim Pratt) successfully revived our beloved 'zine Flytrap, and issue #11 appeared this spring, featuring wonderful stories by Cassie Alexander, Jessica May Lin, Melissa Marr, Dominica Phetteplace, Jenn Reese, Greg van Eekhout, and more; non-fiction by Nick Mamatas and others; poetry by Megan Arkenberg; and heaps of adorable art by Aislinn Harvey.
Want to see what we're all about? You can read issue #11 in its entirety here.
We did it once, so now we'd like to do it again -- in fact, we'd like to publish a new issue of Flytrap each spring. (We're asking for a bit more money than last time, but only because we're raising our pay rates.)
We're raising money for issue #12, to be published in early 2015. With the funds we raise, we'll pay our fiction authors SFWA-professional rates (six cents per word), and we'll pay our poets, artists, and non-fiction writers well too.
We'll open to submissions for one month (in October). Last time Heather edited the fiction and Tim did the non-fiction, poetry, and art selections; this time they're switching roles.
Upon publication, we'll make the 'zine available in assorted ebook formats, publish everything free on our website, and produce a limited number of print copies for Kickstarter backers.
We've published some of the best writers in literary and fantastic fiction, and hope to keep doing so. In the past we've included stories, poems, and essays by writers like Barth Anderson, Christopher Barzak, Elizabeth Bear, Stephanie Burgis, Haddayr Copley-Woods, Alan DeNiro, Jeffrey Ford, Theodora Goss, Daphne Gottlieb, M.K. Hobson, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Jay Lake, Jen Larsen, Kristin Livdahl, Nick Mamatas, Melissa Marr, David Moles, Sarah Monette, Sarah Prineas, Jenn Reese, M. Rickert, Benjamin Rosenbaum, David J. Schwartz, Steve Rasnic Tem, Lavie Tidhar, Catherynne M. Valente, Jeff VanderMeer, Greg van Eekhout, Ray Vukcevich, Leslie What, and even more amazingly talented people, if such a thing can be believed.
So what do you say? Help us give writers and artists money, and bring some beautiful strangeness into the world.
Risks and challenges
Magazines have lots of moving parts -- dealing with contributors, art, layout, printing, digital formatting, and so on -- any of which can potentially cause problems. But we have a lot of experience dealing with that sort of thing.
Tim Pratt is the editor of anthologies including Sympathy for the Devil and Rags & Bones (with Melissa Marr), has been poetry editor for a couple of magazines, and is a senior editor at Locus, the magazine of the science fiction and fantasy field. (He helps create the digital versions of Locus too, so he's got that skillset covered.) Heather Shaw was fiction and poetry editor of online magazine Fishnet, with many of her selections chosen for Year's Best anthologies, and she used to edit poetry for the online magazine Clean Sheets.
Barring life-altering catastrophes, we should have this covered.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
