Those of you who've supported my past efforts: Hi! Here we are again, to send Marla off in grand style.
For those with no idea who I am: I'm raising funds to write and publish the tenth and final full-length novel in my Marla Mason urban fantasy series. I published the first four books with Random House, then turned to crowdfunding to keep the series going, and thanks to readers like you, I've produced five more full-length novels and a shorter prequel. The books are full of snark, banter, violence, moral and physical jeopardy, weird monsters, weirder magic, friendship, enemy-ship, and heart (also hearts ripped beating from chests, sometimes). (Want a taste of what Marla’s all about? Here are some free stories about her, and her world.)
Now it's time for the grand finale, the cherry on top, the finishing move, the last roundhouse kick to the face. This is bittersweet for me. I've been writing about Marla since the late '90s. My relationship with her is one of the longest and most rewarding in my life. I could keep writing about her forever... but I want to go out on a high note, at the top of my game, and leave her in a satisfying place. Help me give her the ending she deserves. Will Marla find true love? Will she resolve all her outstanding true hates? Will she give up godhood or surrender her mortality? Will the underworld go to hell with her in charge? All will be revealed and resolved. (Though I reserve the right to explore her world and bring supporting characters to the forefront in later novels, and Marla could even make cameo appearances in future books... depending on where she ends up on the last page of Closing Doors. But this is the last stop in her journey.)
Besides the satisfaction of enabling me to bring my single greatest project to fruition, you'll also get to read Closing Doors before it's available anywhere else. (New readers, don't be daunted by continuity: all you need to know is that Marla's a sorcerer and part-time goddess of death with a tendency to make bad decisions and the skills necessary to deal with the consequences.)
I'd like to go out on a high note, and with that in mind, I've got a couple of new exclusive rewards this time: A coffee mug featuring Lindsey Look's artwork from Lady of Misrule and the legend "Coffee Now, Kill You Later" (will it get you reported to HR if you take it to work? Who knows!), and a poster featuring the same artwork. (There are specific backer levels to get the poster + ebook or mug + ebook, but you can add an extra $50 for each mug or poster you want to any level; just send me a message telling me what you want and how many, and I'll add them to your haul. For people outside the US, make it $70 extra; shipping costs are brutal.)
This is also the last chance to get a Tuckerization for the series, and have your name appear in a Marla Mason novel. Several people who've opted for that reward in the past have seen their names attached to recurring characters (and also to characters who died almost immediately, it should be noted). It's a fun gift for anyone, including yourself.
I'll also produce a maximum of 15 signed, numbered copies of a limited edition hardcover, too, and offer some of them here.
I hope you can support the novel, either by contributing or spreading the word. As always, your support allows me to devote a few months to writing about Marla – months I wouldn't otherwise be able to afford because I support my family largely through freelance writing. If this gets funded, I can put off other jobs and devote my attention to Marla for a while.
This novel will be my summer project, and I expect to deliver all the rewards by the end of the year, give or take a month.
Interior Art Unlocked! We hit $10,000 (wow, you guys), so I'll commission at least three pieces of interior artwork for the book. (Zack Stella has done the interiors for the previous few volumes, and I'll try to get him again. Check out this dragon!)
If I reach $15,000: I'll commission an original cover painting, ideally from artist Lindsey Look, who did these amazing covers for Grim Tides, Bride of Death, and Lady of Misrule. Behold!
She's so great.
If it goes bigger than that, I'll come up with more, possibly involving me acting out scenes from the novel in the sweet Marla cloak my wife made me, As Seen In My Kickstarter Video.
Let's do this. One last time. (Well, unless I decide to crowdfund a Marla Mason story collection at some point, but that'll be a less complicated affair.)
Risks and challenges
I've successfully crowdfunded ten projects (including over half a dozen through Kickstarter) in the past several years, and I don't foresee any problems with this one. If it funds, I'll devote the late spring and summer to writing, and should get everything delivered in 2016 (or early 2017 at worst).
It's always possible there will be bumps and delays on the production process, or an unforeseen illness or other disaster, but if so, I'll keep everyone posted.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
