The Stranger Reduction Zone!
The Stranger Reduction Zone is a public art piece that I created to help build a stronger community in busy city environments by encouraging people to get to know their neighbors.
This summer, it will be going up in two VERY public spaces. First it will be installed outside in downtown Colorado Springs as part of their 15th Annual Art on the Streets program where it will stand for an entire year right out in front of the city administration building. It has also been invited to stand at the entrance to the Denver County Fair this year to greet everyone who attends, and a lot of people will attend.
It's going to talk now!
The piece will be a little different than the work shown in the video. I have added a crosswalk style push button with the sign shown below attached to it. When someone pushes the button, they will hear an audio clip of someone demonstrating a basic greeting in different languages. Every press will play a different language as it cycles through the different clips.
The Stranger Reduction Zone supports gender and marriage equality!
Backers who chose a sign as their reward will have the option of which configuration and colors they would like their sign to be in.
What the money is for:
I need your help to purchase the materials I'll need to assemble and prepare this piece for long term outdoor use. I will be purchasing a base and post to hold up the work and keep it from being blown over in the wind. I'm also purchasing the push button devices, signage, electronics and speaker to make it talk. All the details are worked out, it just needs to come together. The only thing still being worked out is the source for the audio. I am working on two different very interesting options for this and I'll keep you all updated.
New Stretch Goal!
I'm so excited about having exceeded my goal for this project that I'm adding some extra incentives if the funding grows even more. If this project reaches $1,000 worth of funding, I'll have some groovy stickers made by the good people at http://stickerobot.com/ and toss a few into everybody's backer reward shipment for those rewards at the $7 level or higher (because the $3 level doesn't use envelopes). The stickers these guys make are screened vinyl and are very hardy, they'll last for a good long time even if put on something outside, like a car, your mailbox, etc. :)
I am a multimedia artist in Denver, Colorado and my work includes surreal stereoscopic photography, interactive community intervention installations and concept based self-expansion using cast iron. I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Colorado Denver in 2008 with dual emphasis in Photography and Sculpture. My work has been featured in local, national and international exhibitions. In addition to the two shows this fundraiser is for, I was recently made manager and curator of the Lunar Art Module for Synergy Moon, a Google Lunar X-Prize competitor for whom I'll be managing the first jurried art exhibit on the surface of the Moon.
Risks and challenges
As I mentioned above, the details are already worked out aside from the source for the audio files. I'm working on two different options for where to find those, but if that fails, I do have a solid backup plan to make sure the piece still functions as intended.
Community Ventures Inc. is the company facilitating the Colorado Springs Art on the Streets program and they have chosen to place my piece in front of the city administration building. I think this is a perfect spot to celebrate the diversity of the city and encourage community building. Community Ventures will have to gain the approval of the city to place it here, but they aren't anticipating and problems. If for any reason this spot isn't approved, they will choose a different location for this piece.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
