My name is Timo Nuñez (Bellamy) and I am excited to be premiering my first large-scale Flamenco dance concert called Pasión at the Lobero Theatre on February 18, 2012. This is a piece that I am co-producing, directing, choreographing, designing and starring in. My grandmother, Beatrice Terrés Rosales, (we all called her “Wita”) inspired me to be a flamenco dancer twenty years ago and I have been in love with it ever since. I was lucky to grow up with my dance partner and sister, Beatrice Nuñez Bellamy. Nothing would make Wita more proud than to see us dance together. As I continued to grow serious about the art-form, I also started creating and dreaming of one day having a show of my own. I’m excited to say it is finally here! I have been fortunate to have had some priceless experiences so far as a professional Flamenco soloist. I have been featured on FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance as “America’s #1 Flamenco Dancer” where I performed in front of a TV audience of over eleven million people. I have performed for the Royal Family in Abu Dhabi, shared the stage with Placido Domingo, been directed by Debbie Allen, lived in Spain, made life-long friends and picked up so many amazing tools along the way. Still, as I look back, the most helpful tools have been those that were given to me by my parents and by Wita. Wita gave me such a special sense of achievement every time she would watch me perform and choreograph. It is because of her that I feel such a strong connection to my Spanish roots as she would always let me know how special it was to her that I was an American guy, who had taken on her culture's dance and made a life out of it. This made me always strive to do my best for her. Last year she passed away and at first all I could do was miss her. Somehow with her help I have been able to turn my sadness into motivation. As a result, I am now more determined than ever to make this show a masterpiece for myself and for Wita. She is truly my "muse". (Having said that, I still miss her like crazy.)
Because of what this project means to me, I am so moved by the incredible artists who have decided to participate. The cast consists of 25 performers, both dancers and musicians from all over the world, including singer Isabel Soto Arjona from the Ballet Nacional de España. I was hoping for my dream cast and I got 'em! It is really beautiful to watch each artist as they interpret my visions and see their own personal expressions take shape. Watching it all unfold is like magic and I know Wita has a hand in it.
The elements of the show are all in place and ready to go! I have California’s oldest continuously operating theatre, the grand Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, I have the dancers, the musicians, their passports, the choreography and the costumes designed. What I need now, is your help! ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE so why wait? Please, help me help you! But honestly, you are really helping ME cover my expenses. I can’t tell you which of my artists is the best, as they are all amazing and they all deserve to be paid well. With your help I will be able to do this as well as finally have the hand-made authentic costumes that will make this a visual masterpiece. Remember, $20,000 is just the minimum I need to get any of your funds at all! In other words, IF THE PROJECT DOES NOT hit $20,000, I GET NOTHING. I am able to receive donations beyond this amount as long as the donations are given before the deadline on February 8th! The sky is the limit! If there is any money left over, which is not too likely, I will actually pay myself! Thank you!
BY ALL MEANS! The cast is hired, the theater is rented. Kickstarter funds are used to help pay for the artists, and costumes.
The show date is Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 8pm. For tickets please visit the theater website at http://www.lobero.com. Search for Timo Nuñez presents Pasión on the calendar. VIP tickets include gala following the performance with the artists, tapas and wine.
