FOURTH STRETCH GOAL
I set 'em up, you keep knocking 'em down! We've got 3 days left, so I'll add one final goal. If and when we hit $6,000, I'll add this reward for EVERYONE who has donated to the campaign, at any amount:
I LAUGHED, I CRIED, I HATED IT: A Curmudgeon’s Guide To Horrible And Overrated Movies
In this mini-book (36 pages), I eviscerate movies that were successful, despite sucking beyond belief. Includes: "Face/Off," "My Best Friend's Wedding," "Jingle All The Way," "The Saint," "Hollow Man," "The Wash," "The Matrix Reloaded," and "Citizen Kane." Yes, you read that right - "Citizen Kane," the most over-rated movie of all time. Also includes several years of critiques of the worst nominee in each major Oscar category. I dubbed this distinct honor "The Felix."
THIRD STRETCH GOAL MET!
More thanks to you, and more importantly - more stuff! If and when we hit $5,000, I'll add this reward for EVERYONE who has donated to the campaign, at any amount:
mp3 from ESPN Radio's The Tony Kornheiser Show, in which Tony reads and discusses my column "Nephew's 'Enemies List' Exposed." Dan's son, Tommy, who was 7 years old at the time, put Mr. Kornheiser on his hit list for making fun of Binghamton. (Kornheiser graduated from SUNY Binghamton.) Someone sent my column to the show, and Tony read it on the air. Then he and his producers tried to brainstorm ways to win back Tommy's respect. It's very, very funny. There's only 6 days left in the Kickstarter, so if you want to hear this, point a few friends to this page!
SECOND STRETCH GOAL MET!
You guys rock. If and when we hit $4,500, I'll add this reward for EVERYONE who has donated to the campaign, at any amount:
"Dan Mollen: Jackass of the Month"
Oh, so this way turns the worm... I got my chance to write a revenge hit piece about Dan. It also includes a photo. Not only was this photo the worst picture ever taken of Dan (which takes some doing), it's quite possibly the most awkward teen photo in history. Based on what? Well, when Google first introduced Google Images, there was a period of about a year when the NUMBER ONE search result for the words "high school" was this photo. Users of online forums were jokingly using his photo (and mine, by the way) as their "avatar" (profile picture, basically). Wanna see it? Ask some pals to pre-order their books through this campaign and get us to the next goal!
FIRST STRETCH GOAL MET!
"Tim Mollen: Jackass of the Month"
A very funny article written by my brother, Dan, for his online humor magazine in the early 2000s. It includes the single worst photo that has ever been taken of me. Both were taken down from the Web years ago, at my request, because they made the number one Google result for my name "Tim Mollen: Jackass." True, but not helpful for my career... I'll e-mail these out after the campaign ends on March 1. There will be two versions: .doc and .pdf.
BOOK DESCRIPTION (with purpose of fundraiser below):
Each column is a humorous snapshot of a day in the author's past, written as a journal entry. A particular entry may be from Halloween 1980, yesterday, or the day he was born. By writing a diary in retrospect, Mollen satirizes both past and present, serving up pop culture and nostalgia with a wit that is both sharp and gentle-hearted. Many of the entries present poignant, self-deprecating stories of growing up in the 1970s and '80s as the youngest of six boys in a middle-class, Irish Catholic family.
There are three volumes, each with 90 classic columns and 90 full-color photos. There's also a CD, with Mollen reading 12 of his best stories.
PURPOSE OF KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN:
Self-publishing 3 books and a CD requires financing to address some specific needs:
- Paying my very talented cover designer. Her art for all three books and the CD is gorgeous, and I'm thrilled with it.
- Printing copies to sell directly to bookstores and other retail outlets, and to take to signings and other events.
- Utilizing Amazon's "Complex Conversion to Kindle" service, which will ensure the book's layout and photos will translate well to their e-readers.
- Converting content for other e-readers and mobile platforms, including the Nook and iPad.
- Mastering the audio tracks (already recorded) for the CD.
- Registering copyrights with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
- Submitting to the Library of Congress.
There will be even larger expenses to launch a marketing campaign:
- Launch party in early May - venue, entertainment, food, and drink.
- Press kit - including posters, postcards, info sheets, bookmarks, and business cards.
- Newspaper, radio, TV, and online advertising.
- Travel expenses for a national book tour.
The Kickstarter video for this project features the song "Happy" by Annapolis, MD singer-songwriter Doug Segree. You can check out more of Doug's music at:
Risks and challenges
The books are completely written and edited. I have a full-color photo to accompany each column. The publishing prep and design work is nearly complete.
I hope contributions will continue after the goal is met (until the end of the 30 days), especially to help reach the marketing goals for the books.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
