Help us share the story of New Jersey’s WFMU, the world’s longest-running freeform radio station, in its fight to stay alive.
Freeform or Death has received a challenge grant from two anonymous donors. If we can reach $67,000 by Tuesday night, they will kick in $13,000! This opportunity is a dream come true that will greatly improve our ability to make festival deadlines for this coming year and ultimately help bring the film to a much larger audience. More details on the update page.
FREEFORM OR DEATH follows Ken Freedman, the manager and leader of the world’s oldest freeform radio station, WFMU, and his fight to keep the station afloat through an economic collapse, in a dying industry, with an increasingly Internet-addicted audience. At 51 years old, Ken’s whole life is strapped to a station that faces crumbling infrastructure, encroaching institutional forces, and internal generational conflicts. Will his 25-year effort to keep WFMU alive be enough?
“Tim Smith is a fantastic storyteller. As producer of my Yahoo show Failure Club and editor of Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope, he has proven himself to be an invaluable collaborator. His directorial debut, FREEFORM OR DEATH, will be a brilliant look at the disappearance of the public airwaves and the ever-important fight for Freedom of Speech. I can't wait.”
– Morgan Spurlock, Super Size Me
Bring FREEFORM OR DEATH to life! Help us share the intimate story of New Jersey’s WFMU, the world’s longest-running freeform radio station, and one man’s attempt to keep it independent and alive in the face of a recession, the persistent threat of commercial media, and the challenges that come with keeping a rebellious group of outsiders together.
Much like the WFMU philosophy, FREEFORM OR DEATH is a project built upon passion and preservation. In the past, WFMU has consistently rejected any type of direct backing from governmental institutions or for-profit corporations. Most of the disk jockeys are unpaid volunteers, driven by DIY spirit to create authentic, spontaneous radio. WFMU is radio made for the people, by the people, and FREEFORM OR DEATH functions in the same vein. We are committed to making a film about independent media on our own terms, and we need your help accomplishing this.
YOUR SUPPORT WILL HELP US SHARE THIS SPECIAL STORY...
FREEFORM OR DEATH will predominately be made up of verité scenes grounded in the personal story of Ken Freedman, as well as interviews with the vibrant characters that make up the WFMU family. Additionally, there will be sequences of in-studio performances by musicians like The New Pornographers, Robyn Hitchcock, Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Joanna Newsom and many others.
Funds raised through Kickstarter will be directed towards completing the film. The funds will support all facets of the post-production process, most importantly, editing.
AGAIN, PLEASE HELP US BRING FREEFORM OR DEATH TO LIFE!
