About

One of the greatest stories ever told, brought to the masses.

(Chapter 1 & 2 preview link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/fitvtodbdnlq7q5/AADzd45R2piLc49_D49ikLD9a?dl=0)

A few months ago my girlfriend told me that she didn't see the point in video games, and that she had little interest in playing them.

This made me feel quite sad, not because my attempt to find a co-habiting gaming buddy had failed, but because some of the greatest stories I've ever experienced have come from video games.

Final Fantasy VII is one of those games. As a youngster I didn't have much money and my parents would seldom let me buy games. As a result I'd usually go hungry for the day at school and use my lunch money to rent the latest titles from my local video store. Most of the time I'd have games for one evening and the next day they'd be returned, never to be rented again. Final Fantasy VII was different. For at least a month I missed a lot of meals and lost a lot of weight.

The story of Cloud and the Eco group AVALANCHE trying to save the world from the evil conglomerate Shinra is magnificent. Naturally the at-the-time stunning visuals, sweeping cinematics and a catchy soundtrack helped bolster the experience somewhat, but even if we remove those things, the story itself with its twists and turns, shock tactics and sad points made for a plot so deep and yet so accessible to audiences around the world that it still surprises me to this day that it's never been turned into a hollywood blockbuster.

So with my girlfriend's sentiments ringing in my ears I thought to myself "People are missing out so what can I do about this? How can I bring one of my favourite stories of all time to the people who will never pick up a Playstation controller?"

Final Fantasy VII - A novelisation

About two years ago I started writing two novels. The first was a non-fiction travel book, detailing my own personal exploits as I travelled the world in my early twenties. The second was Final Fantasy VII.

I've always enjoyed writing and I get a kick out of seeing how creative I can be in detailing the environments and characters within my work. I began adapting Final Fantasy VII because despite being a pre-existing story, there was a lot of freedom to play around with prose. The story doesn't exist on Earth as we know it and so part of the challenge was trying to build the environments on paper so that those who had never seen or played the game could imagine them in their mind. It was so much more fun than writing my travel journal which felt much more like work. Final Fantasy VII was my playground to unwind in when I needed a break.

Since I completed book one (which takes the reader from the very beginning of the game up until the point where the heroes reach Cosmo Canyon) it's sat on my hard drive and has been read by only a handful of people. Feedback has always been positive and a few people have told me over the years that I should make steps to do something with it, but I never really knew what to do with it. I almost sent it to SquareSoft once but the fear of either being laughed at or ignored quickly stopped me. Because of this I never moved on to writing the remainder of the story either, something I've wanted to do but have lacked the drive to do so without a greater amount of feedback.

Then came Kickstarter.

From hard drive dwelling fan-fic to glorious Novel!

I brought this project to Kickstarter for three reasons:

  • I want to give people of all ages and walks of life the opportunity to experience this story.
  • I'm proud of my work and while I get nervous giving it to anyone to read I feel like I should share what I've accomplished and let the public be my Judge, Jury and Executioner.
  • Kickstarter can help make this ugly PDF into a glorious and glossy printed Swan (I'm going overboard with the metaphors aren't I?)

How it will work

First and foremost I must stress that this project is strictly not for profit! Having done research, I can legally print this work as long as I don't make any money from it, or depict the story in anyway that alters the original vision of the creator. I am doing a straight adaptation with the only alterations being some paraphrasing and condensing where necessary.

The process is fairly simple. Download the first two chapters for free from here (a final draft edit is still needed): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/fitvtodbdnlq7q5/AADzd45R2piLc49_D49ikLD9a?dl=0

If you like it and would like to read more then please back the project and depending on how much you give and how well the project does, you'll receive either a digital or paperback copy as soon as the book returns from the press!! It's that easy!

The book is being printed on full US publishing grade paper with a full glossy cover. The preliminary artwork is featured at the top of this page, but in time that may change as I haven't even thought of a cover yet (submissions are welcome!!)

If the project is a success then I'll begin writing book two and order details will be sent to all backers of the first book.

Risks and challenges

The first book is complete and so as soon as it returns from the press then it should be good to go. Delays in shipping may occur if the project is an overwhelming success. Additional editing time may also be needed in order to meet the page printing requirements.

As discussed in the project description, as a not-for-profit venture, there should be no legal issue involved in this project, however stranger things have happened and should I run into any issues I'll be sure to keep everyone updated.

The follow up books will take a long time to write. I've estimated that it'll probably be three books in total. Please understand that by backing book one that you are not backing all three.
