Transmodernity - A Film About Changemakers

ABOUT THE FILM

'Transmodernity - In The Blue Hour' is a poetic documentary film that explores what IS and CAN BE. It is about the new era we are now entering into: a turbulent time of transformation.

The film - a mosaic-like portrait of changemakers and their projects - is an inspiration and appeal to take responsibility, dream and act upon it: What comes next?

How can we, as individuals and communities, create new social imaginations and new narratives?

What kind of concrete solutions for a joyful and sustainable way of living can we share?

How can we give value to both science and spirituality? How can we contribute to the paradigm shift that is happening right now?

WHAT IS TRANSMODERNITY?

Transmodernity is an umbrella term that addresses a socioeconomic, political and philosophical shift way beyond our globalised hyper capitalist world. It is an exemplary term that could be used to describe the new age that we are diving into. While being critical of modernity and postmodernity, it takes the best elelments of both – trans-forming our society into something improved. Old systems that over the course of time, proved to not work out need to be reformed from within. We need to stay playful, have courage and optimism that we can make a difference collectively if we take responsibility as individuals. How do we take the freedom we fought to obtain as individuals and yet find purpose and belonging in our communities?

How do we change the modern man prison from within, by starting grassroot movements and regaining our power without overregulation?

How can we contribute to the creation of an improved society?

What kind of concrete solutions for a joyful and sustainable way of living can we share?

WHAT DO WE HOPE TO ACHIEVE WITH THIS FILM?

We want to inspire our audience to take responsibility for their actions and choices, set impulses to act upon your thoughts, we want to offer a variety of options where to look and where to begin. It is easy to feel overwhelmed with the Weltschmerz upon your shoulders. We often feel like we are looking the end of the world in the eye, while forgetting that we are the ones who created it and are supporting it by remaining in a state of paralysis -- and thus also have the power to alter the course again.

WHAT DO WE WANT FROM YOU

We want this film to be beautiful and we want this film to reach as many people as possible, which brings us to our next point: we need your support! What for? We want to give our lovechild movie the best possible editor, we want to create subtitles for an English and German version, and ideally making it accessible to a broader range of viewers from the countries we shot in (ie ideally having Serbo-Croatian & Arabic subtitles). We want to give bit of a polish through colourgrading, which means tinting it to make it look better, sound design, and additionally add some music if we can.

WHO WE FILMED

• The makers space HABIBI.WORKS near a refugee camp in Northern Greece

• The creative co-working space and cultural hub KAOS Berlin

• The Serbian drama therapist, actress and singer Lidija Andanov

• The intentional community and cultural hub Die Blaue Blume situated by Lake Constance

Sibenik Hub for Ecology founded by a young Serbo-Croatian lady

• ...and her mother Irena Ateljevic, who coined the term Transmodernity and then left academia behind to walk the talk

• The Swiss drug expert, music scientist and mathematician Hans Cousto, who dedicates his life to our autonomy and has explored the cosmic octave of harmony

Mischa Badasyan, a young Armenian performance artist, activist and social worker, who shows us the importance of touch

• The eager Brazilian entrepreneur Pedro Jardim who offers solutions to decentralize business structures and explores new economic levels

• The American outlaw anthropologist Alexa Clay who talks about the importance of storytelling, what we can learn from misfits and the importance of neo-tribalism in our Western society

• ...and Satish Kumar, former monk and author from India, who founded Schumacher College which explores holistic learning and teaching method, bringing together economics and ecology

 THE TEAM

We are three young women from Berlin - and share a special bond of friendship as well as a diverse range of professional skills, which deeply manifests itself in our filmmaking process, contributing to the creation of a holistically ‘transmodern’ production.

Halea is an artist, filmmaker and cultural producer. She studied Media & Communications and Photography at Goldsmiths, University of London, then founded the cultural platform and label MUSÉ in 2013 - and continues to work as a freelance creative producer and project manager in art, film and events.

Luisa is a writer, filmmaker and storyteller. After graduating from London College of Communication with a degree in Journalism, she worked as an editor for film and TV formats, film production and script writing.

• Friedi is a healer, filmmaker and cultural scientist. In 2011, she quit her Medicine Studies in Hungary to spend time in India and instead explore alternative ways of healing and re-connecting to one’s self. She is now doing a Cultural Studies course at Zeppelin University on the German shore of Lake Constance, where she founded the intentional community and cultural platform DIE BLAUE BLUME.

Halea and Friedi have known each other since primary school, and Halea and Luisa led parallel lives (same parties, same parks, same friends) until we finally physically met in 2013, after just having moved back to Berlin, from London, where we studied at same time.

Halea first encountered the concept of Transmodernity in 2012, when the mother of a close friend (la mama and daughter are now of course both protagonists in our film!) published an essay on this philosophical concept - which is an umbrella term for the emerging socio-cultural, economic, political and philosophical changes taking place at this moment in time. It is a wide, deep and radical concept that has since then been central to Halea’s work. Sharing it with her friends, the idea of observing and naming ‘what is happening right now’ and ‘what can possibly be’ caused ripples in the waters of her surroundings.

Then one thing led to the next: In Spring 2016, over an Indian dinner in Neukoelln, the three came together and decided that we want to embark on this journey together. We felt the moment and constellation were right - and felt a strong urge to dream, to act, to observe, to absorb, and to share. Everything came together much quicker than expected - in-kind support, equipment, time and schedules, ideas, contacts, research and cultural grants, a VW bus and a driver (one of our closest friends) - so we were able to start shooting in August and finished shooting at the end of December 2016. At this point we would like to express our gratitude towards the individuals that supported us so generously with their time, love and energy - we would not have been able to come this far: Gianni, Kiki, Matias, Marc, Celine and our wonderful Maylis. Thank you so so so much. Without you guys, this couldn't have happened.

But we need to continue, move on to the next stage: post-production - and need your support in order to complete the film... and bring it to the people... to you!
