Tiles is an inventor toolkit 💡 for creative people, students and non-experts to play, learn and ideate human-centric Internet of Things inventions, while having fun.    

 Become an IoT inventor! It's now as easy as playing a card game:

⚡️ Technology cards  provide the basic ingredients for designing smart objects: including everyday things and places, internet services and sensors, human's actions and interactive feedback.

🎯 Missions cards unleash your inner inventor, skyrocketing your creativity with fun and provocative design quests.

👓 Criteria cards bring you back down to earth, helping you reflect and prove your ideas.

You can play with the Tiles toolkit alone or with friends and mates:

🃏 Single play mode  use the cards for brainstorming 🧠 and creative thinking 💡. Combine physical objects and places with sensors  and data to design a smart object that fulfills your design mission. 

⚔️ Multi play mode  when you use the cards together with the Tiles Inventor Board ⌨︎ you can arrange hackathon-style Tiles Workshops, where multiple teams invent IoT solutions to solve given societal challenges (e.g. climate change, waste reduction, participation in social life); combining cards play with design thinking activities. Tiles workshops are also great ways for young students to learn the basic of design and computational thinking 👾.

 What can you do with Tiles?

  • Are you a creative, maker or doer? 🥽 - Use Tiles to explore and learn the possibilities provided by the IoT. Generate great ideas for you next DIY project.
  • Are you an educator?  📚 - Use Tiles in your classroom, fablab or college to teach the foundations of IoT, design and computational thinking. Group your students in teams and let them invent an IoT application as project assignment.
  • Are you a designer? ✏️ - Integrate Tiles in your own workflow to engage your clients in ideation workshops. Extend Tiles with extra cards and activities for the domains you are designing for. 

Tiles has been created in Norway 🇳🇴 by Simone, Francesco and Monica; with Anders, Jonas and Ida. Our mission is to enable everyone to become an inventor of human-centric technology for public good.

We successfully tested the toolkit with 1500+ users 🤓 around the globe. We are now ready to release the final version of our cards 🃏 and inventor board ⌨︎; but we need your support to kickstart the production of our first batch 🏭! Your contribution will help cover the costs of production of the toolkit, including finalizing the design, card and board printing. You will ultimately help spread great and human-centered IoT inventions!

Tiles IoT Inventor Cards

The Tiles IoT Inventor Cards is a collection of 100+ cards grouped in 7 color-coded packs:     

The first five decks explain the basic ingredients of any IoT product; they focus on how people experience the IoT as an ecology of people, physical objects and digital information, while hiding technicalities. The last two groups provide triggers for creativity and reflection, to foster idea generation.

So far we have created 100 cards, however, more cards are in the making and they will be added to the final version shipped to backers 📦.

How to play? 

The easiest way to play with Tiles is via our quick brainstorming 🧠 activity, useful to generate simple inventions. The process uses augmentation 🧙‍♀️ as a design strategy, meaning that the ideation 💡 journey starts and builds upon an everyday object everyone knows and can relate to. You use the Tiles IoT Inventor Cards to add technology, extending or augmenting ✨ the functionality of the chosen everyday thing in order to make it more useful, playful or engaging than its ordinary self!   

Tiles IoT Inventor Workshop

While the Tiles IoT Inventor Cards are great for brainstorming sessions, we have designed a workshop experience for teams of inventors 🤓. The Tiles IoT Inventor Workshop is a great way to learn the foundations of IoT and design thinking while ideating an IoT invention to solve a given societal problem (e.g. climate change 🌪, waste reduction ♻️, social segregation).

During a 1-hour ⏰ workshop, participants fast-pace through a set of 6 design thinking 🧠 activities: explore 👀, challenge ⚔️, combine 🥘, sketch ✏️, refine 🔜 and pitch 🎤 to collaboratively converge towards an IoT invention idea 💥. The outcome of the workshop is a storyboard and an elevator pitch ready to be used to drive prototyping actions 🥽, collaborative discussion and reflection.

The Workshop Kit REWARD 🎯 provides all the add-ons materials needed to setup and run the workshop:

The Tiles Inventor Board ⌨︎ enforces and scaffolds the creative journey of the participants by guiding towards meaningful combinations of Tiles Cards while encouraging production of design artefacts.

Thanks to the playbook, little or no supervision is required: one facilitator or teacher can easily run a workshop with multiple teams. 

Tiles IoT Cards + extra Scenario 🏞 and Persona 👤 cards: In addition to the cards included in the standard deck, we provide two extra packs of cards, supporting the design of inventions to tackle societal problems for public good, for example waste reduction ♻️, citizen's participation 🤝, social interaction 🗣 and sustainable transportation 🛴.

Backed by research ⚗️

We pilot tested the Tiles IoT Inventor Toolkit with 1500+ users in 100+ events in schools 🏫, universities 🎓, fablabs 🔧 and corporations 🏢. As a result, 500+ great IoT ideas 💡 have been generated. Several ideas were implemented in prototypes and even became business ventures 💼.

More importantly, response from our workshop participants has been amazing 😍. Each and every group that played with Tiles managed to get (at least!) one idea💡 by the end of the day 🌅; while having fun. Results from the workshops, both in terms of design outcomes and learning goals, have been published in international conferences and journals.  

A beta version of the Tiles IoT Inventor Toolkit has been successfully used to generate ideas during workshops at: Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Oslo Metropolitan University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Danske Tekniske Universitetet, University of Washington, ThingsCon Conference, MakerFaire European Edition, Markaplassen High School, Heimdal High School, Sverresborg Ungdomskole, Birralee International School and many other. From Ideas to Prototypes and Startups 🦄

An invention idea generated with Tiles enables participants to move into prototyping using popular toolkits like Arduino, Raspberry Pi or Micro::bits. The way in which Tiles foresees the cards as groups of triggers and responses makes easy to move into prototyping with code 👾 and electronics ⚡️. Further, the storyboard ✏️ and elevator pitch 🎤 created during the process are useful to effectively disseminate the idea.  

Motivation and Team 

The project comes from the work of Simone, Francesco, Monica at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and Jonas, Anders, Ida at Nice Industridesign AS. We are researchers, designers and creatives working at the intersection of design ✏️, technology 💻 and learning 📚.  

Our motivation for creating the Tiles IoT Inventor Toolkit is two-fold. First, besides the abundance of prototyping and maker tools 🧰 for the IoT (e.g. Arduino, Raspberry Pi) we couldn't find any specific tool to support the early and most crucial phases of product development, meaning brainstorming 🧠 and ideation 💡. Second, we find today's IoT landscape more technology-centric than human-centric. We believe that including and engaging end-users like students, makers or fellow citizens in the IoT development process is essential to develop person-centric IoT products to tackle today's societal challenges. 

We ❤ Open Source

The toolkit can be extended in several ways. Blank cards  are provided for each group of cards. These are "joker" cards that can be used to add custom things 🙊, services 🌍 or interaction metaphors 👆 directly during brainstorming. Because of the flexibility of the cards, custom ideation activities, processes and inventor boards can be developed in addition. 

Finally, by providing the source files of the cards in our Github repository, under Creative Commons BY-SA license, we want to encourage the development of community-driven extensions and specializations of our cards for unique domains. Just fork our Github repository!  

Cards and Board Quality 👌

The Tiles IoT Cards shipped to backers will be printed on smooth and resistant 💎 300/gsm paper by a professional card manufacturer 😎 that has state of the art facilities 🏭 and has already provided us with high-quality samples (photo ↓). The Cards come in a deluxe rigid box 🎁 which has some spare room for extra cards.   

The Tiles Inventor Board is printed on fabric made of 97% washable 🧽 natural cotton fiber. The board, sized circa 70x100cm, can be easily folded 🗺 and transported 🚲. The board is made to be reused during many workshops. Although washable, the board is not ink-repellent, so please provide your workshop participants with Post-its™.

Specific cards represented in the pictures might not be present in the final version, and/or their design might change.

Risks and challenges

The illustrations are finished and ready to be sent for proof printing. The cards in the photos belong to a previous version of the Tiles IoT Inventor Toolkit, but they were printed by the same manufacturer we will use at the end of the campaign. The biggest risk consists in meeting our deadline for shipping the cards in case something out of our control happens, for example delayed delivery from our manufacturer.
