We are Tight Loops, two young artists addicted to adventure, the outdoors, and fly fishing. We are seriously passionate about story telling, be it through film, photo, or written word. We've realized the only way to truly tell the stories we want to tell, is to make some life altering changes. It's dawned on us that the only way to create without boundaries and constraints, is to knock them down entirely. Documenting our trip through video and photography, we will be heading west to Montana in our 1985 VW Vanagon. We will meet others along the way, see and explore the American landscape, and produce a body of work that we hope will inspire others to chase their passions, and realize their dreams.
We will leave our homes in New England in early June. Documenting the entire process along the way. We encourage you to check out some of our recent short works here:

DOCUMENTING THE ADVENTURE
We are setting out to document and tell the story of the American dream; hitting the open road, reconnecting with our environment and rediscovering ourselves, while simultaneously meeting others along the way and sharing their stories. We will have highs, lows, risks, and rewards, all of which will be showcased in a feature documentary to be released in 2016 for festival circulation and eventual distribution. A digital download of the film will be made available as a reward to our supporters.
A hardcover photo book comprised of photographs shot on 120 and 35mm film will tell our story, in addition to the film. The book will be available in both digital format and hardcover to our supporters as a reward. It will be released alongside the feature film in 2016.
NOTES FROM THE ROAD:
Throughout our journey we will be releasing content from the road in the form of short webisodes as well as photo updates to keep our supporters up to date. We will release these updates every couple of weeks, depending on when we will have internet access, and they can be seen at tightloopsfly.com.
We've wired the van to run all sorts of gadgets (computer, hard drives, photo scanner, etc) so that we can guarantee quality updates for those of you who are following along. We've also brought a bubbling cauldron of photo processing chemicals so Aimee can process her own film without the hassle of lab processing times and fees. Developing our own film is also essential in maintaining an intimate connection to our work.
WHO WE ARE
Aimee -I was raised in New England, but have always dreamed of making my way West. I spent most of my childhood camping in Vermont & New Hampshire. Those places will always be close to my heart, but I'm ready to discover what else is out there. Working lots of dead end jobs that were not allowing me to express my creative side was becoming stifling, and now it's time for a change. I want to fully immerse myself in my surroundings and capture the things that inspire me on film. Film has always been my medium of choice, and my love of photography has allowed me to see and experience things I never thought I would. After months of planning, and years of dreaming, its finally time to make this project a reality. I can't wait to share this project and experience with everyone!
Chase - With a family from Montana, and a series of life changing events that put me in the Middle East (Haifa, Israel) for over a decade, I've spent most of my life trying to get back to the western expanses of my childhood summers, where I feel most at home, creative, and happy. After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2011 with a degree in filmmaking, I was quickly swallowed up by the professional work world and lost sight of what was really important to me. After several years working in the film industry, and several more in the construction business as an independent contractor, its time to finally take control of what matters, break the monotony of the 9-5 work world, and create something meaningful. This trip, and this project, could not have come at a more opportune time. It's long overdue, but I'm finally putting my ears to the ground, eyes on the road ahead, and following my heart. I can't wait to see what's in store!
HOME SWEET HOME AKA "BULLWINKLE"
We'd like to introduce you to Bullwinkle, our 1985 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia Wolfsburg Edition. Bullwinkle will not only be our home for the three months we are on the road, he will also be our mobile creative studio. In an ever-changing world of new sights, sounds, and experiences, Bullwinkle will be our rock, lifeline, and companion. We have been tirelessly prepping him for the journey ahead with the help of our sponsor GoWesty. We are so fortunate to have a sponsor that is at the forefront of Vanagon repair and restoration.
WHERE WE ARE NOW, AND HOW YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS WILL HELP
We have been working tirelessly, and saving every penny we can to prepare ourselves for this production. Its several years in the making, and we just need a little extra help to make sure we can give people an awesome product. Your contributions are essential to this project being successful!
Here is how we plan to use our funding:
- Travel Expenses - gas, tolls, emergencies, etc.
- Maintenance & Repairs - oil changes, van repairs, camera repairs, and whatever else the road throws at us.
- Equipment- Better gear means being able to show you our absolute best work. This includes, cameras, lenses, darkroom supplies, film, hard drives, memory cards, photo scanner, etc.
- Kickstarter Rewards - Getting these awesome rewards to you!
What happens if we get over funded?
In the event that we receive more than our goal, we will be making major equipment upgrades, (in the camera department!) and putting every penny back into the production of the film and book! Fingers crossed!
Risks and challenges
With projects like this, that include lots of travel time and unpredictable circumstances, there are inherent risks and challenges. We have done everything in our power to prepare Bullwinkle for the road ahead. That being said, with a vehicle made in 1985, there will be hiccups. But with the help of our awesome sponsor Go Westy and our knowledge of Volkswagens we think that we will be able to overcome these challenges, document them, and learn from them.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
