-Hello!- So, I'm Amy. Also known as Tiger Tea. And this is my first time using Kickstarter to fund a project. I'm starting pretty small but hopefully it can lead to bigger things in the future :)

What is my project?

For some background, here is my first print-run of 'There's a Tiger on the Bus,' my first adventure in visual storytelling.

I made about 15 copies in total

Construction required scissors, scalpel, and lots of glue
Construction required scissors, scalpel, and lots of glue

As you can see, my first little picture book is a very hand-made affair. The artwork was printed on glossy A3 paper, folded and cut to make the pages, and then the cover was photocopied stripes on orange card. Obviously, quite time intense to put several copies together, not to mention the error margins when things didn't line-up or the glue didn't set properly.

What I'd like to do is get 'There's a Tiger on the Bus' printed and bound professionally, at a quantity that I could never hope to achieve on my own. I'd also like to make a full colour cover for it.

Not only that, I'd also like to get TWO NEW BOOKS printed professionally too. That's right, you heard it here first - another two little books featuring animals in odd places doing odd things :D

I'll start visual development of the two other books whilst this campaign is running so I can post work-in-progress and sketches for you to enjoy. The aim is to have artwork for all three books almost complete by the end of the campaign (though I have set the fulfilment date for August to allow for additional drawing, revisions, getting everything sent to the printers, getting it all back, then posting things out).

Like the first book, the two new books will have a limited colour scheme, be in A6 portrait, and have an animal in a bizarre situation. Below are a few quick sketches for flavour.

Where did the idea come from? Well, I'm not entirely sure xD 'There's a Tiger on the Bus' was literally one of those little ideas that just pops in to your head. I had been reading loads of kids picture books at the time and I think it just came from that, from the innocence of kids tales and the fact that anything can be possible. I wanted to craft a world where it was equally possible and impossible for a tiger to be on a bus.

Why did I start with a tiger? Because it's my favourite animal <3

Rewards

How will the money be spent?

This project might seem tiny compared to what you usually see on Kickstarter but it's always worth being honest about ANY amount of money. After reward fulfilment, extra copies of the books will go on sale online (Etsy for example) and be stocked locally in comic shops. They won't get the inky-doodles though ;)

£425 = printing costs - Ripe Digital
£30-50 = estimated completion fees
£175 = covers any unexpected shipping costs, plus backing card, ink, paper, cellophane bags, etc

Specifications for the books; A6, full colour, recycled 115gsm paper stock, recycled 300gsm paper stock for the cover, 12 pages including cover

What happens if you raise more than you need? Priority will go towards adding extras for backers :) Things like stickers, badges, notebooks, colouring books, etc. However much extra is raised, I'm sure there's something I can get made just for you lovely folk :)

What's an inky-doodle?

As it suggests - a doodle done in india ink :) Cartridge paper is stretched over a huge art-board, divided up into little slightly-bigger-than-A6 sections, and then a basic drawing is done in a very light blue pencil. Then I take my brush-pen filled with Winsor&Newton india ink and just run riot.

About me
I'm an illustrator working across print and digital, with a fondness for animals, bright colours, and telling stories. Despite being influenced by comics for years, I've never actually done much narrative image-making. I have stacks of books all about techniques, plenty of beautiful picture books and comic books to fuel the soul, but nothing I can call my own - until I started 2016 with a mission.

After a really turbulent 2015, I wanted to make 2016 'my year.' I wanted to make stuff that I've always dreamed of, even if just on a small scale. Comics, picture books, animated shorts, products, a video game…the list goes on, and I may not do them all. But I'm going to have fun trying :D

Risks and challenges

The first obvious risk/challenge is the fact that this is my first Kickstarter. I'm hoping that by keeping the initial print-run and asking amount fairly small, it will make things more manageable. I could have easily added all kinds of things, like stickers, badges, notebooks, etc, and I want to do these things eventually, but I think I need to start small. I would much rather start small and make sure everyone who has chosen to support me gets the best possible outcome <3

I've researched postage costs as far as possible, and accounted for the various fees upon completion. I've got a good store of parcel tape, packing boards, envelopes, etc, and a post office nearby. I've allowed a good chunk of time to get things fulfilled, to allow for things like printing delays, drawing all of the inky-doodles etc. Artwork for one little book is already complete and print-ready.
